Finally xbox owners can put their kinect to use. This was pretty cool and i makes me want to buy the xbox and a kinect.

aviator1894475d ago (Edited 4475d ago )

You think mass effect 3 is the only reason the kinect will and is useful for?

Until now, I've had tons of fun with the two dance central games, kinect sports season 1, and gunstringer.
Oh yeah, my wife loves to get it on with Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012. :)

Rainstorm814475d ago (Edited 4475d ago )

IMO Kinect is least useful for Mass Effect 3, All the functionality could be done with a headset

As aviator said there are games that show Kinects use far better thsm this.....i was giving voice commands on SOCOM US Navy Seals this is far from a new or useful feature

gamingdroid4475d ago

Not true at all as Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson from Bioware says:

"Kinect’s internal hardware is what makes it possible, not just its microphones."

http://www.kotaku.com.au/20...

If the developer had to manually create the voice recognition software themselves, it might require processing power that reduces other parts of the game, or the recognition might not even be that accurate. If you used Kinect, then you would know it's voice recognition capability is top class.

BLow4475d ago

Wow, I guess nobody played Socom back in the day. I loved that feature of the game and was surprised how well it worked(especially back then ON PS2 BY THE WAY). That was one feature I really wanted in Socom 4. "Fireteam get down", or "Bravo fire at will". Man, that brought back some memories..haha..Thanks man. Only one can dream if voice commands come back to Socom or any tactical squad base shooter ONLY USING MICS.

Streamline streamline streamline

More gimmicky? Absolutely

Better? honestly....probably not

Do I want to look and sound like an idiot shouting at the TV screen to examine something? I can see that getting very annoying very quickly

gamingdroid4475d ago (Edited 4475d ago )

My experience with Mass Effect, is I constantly have to essentially pause the game to use squad control.

Now I can just say "Liara Singularity"!

edit: @kneon below

***In ME1 the only command I would give it to tell my squad to go hide behind something so they don't die while I take out the bad guys.***

That is because you aren't controlling your team mates.... If you did, you could use their powers to complement yours. That is why you pick team mates.

You are missing a huge part of the game mechanics if you aren't putting your team mates to use.

kneon4475d ago

I just ignore the squad commands as your squad is fairly useless anyway. In ME1 the only command I would give it to tell my squad to go hide behind something so they don't die while I take out the bad guys.

Rainstorm814475d ago

I understand what you mean, because going to the "wheel" to select what powers should be used is essentially pausing the gameplay but telling your squad to go to cover is a button press on the controller

And i agree the teammates are extremly useful in ME 1 & 2 especially on the harder difficulties.

But after hours of gameplay it would be repetitive to have said "Liara Singularity" for the 500th time....and im not quite a fan of voicing the dialog tree when Shepard will say something different anyway, it would be better if you said Shepards lines and the characters respond to you.

IMO it would be a more immersive experience if you werent using the controller at all then talking to your squad would make perfect sense

Christopher4475d ago (Edited 4475d ago )

That's the thing, though, I tended to have to pause the game at the same time as I needed to hand out commands. Especially since most of the time I was using two at once.

Doing it in real time isn't bad, but I'm more likely to have to pause the game to give myself an easier time at targeting and queuing multiple squad abilities at once.

At least that was my experience. I can see some general use of it when switching between ammo abilities or small combat scenarios where I'm not relying much on my squad in the first place, but on the majority of combat scenarios, I'm not sure I wouldn't need to pause the game.

This may have changed in ME3, though, if they've made it so that combat lines up with the use of voice commands instead of pausing to activate abilities.

kaveti66164475d ago

Please don't use "looking like an idiot" as an argument against Kinect. There are better arguments against it than that one. You might look like an idiot when you're dropping off your mail, or taking out the garbage or ordering fast food. You might look like an idiot when you're playing video games or reading books or watching porn.

BillytheAlien4475d ago

Wow...the big feature for Kinect and ME3 is the ability to give out voice commands....

...

That's...nice I suppose <sigh>

Nightfallen4475d ago

Any reason this is not possible with a quality headset? I'm not familiar with this tech, but it looks like kinect is not needed.

Christopher4475d ago

It's possible with any headset device or even the PS Eye, but they're selling it as a core Kinect capability.

And, for those who say, it's only built into Kinect...

http://n4g.com/news/392801/...

metsgaming4475d ago

binary domain is doing voice commands and uses a headset. Other games have done it in the past aswell, i believe socom had it in the ps2 days not entirely sure though.

gamingdroid4475d ago (Edited 4475d ago )

Yeah, but the voice processing is done by Kinect. Does the headset do voice recognition in the hardware?

If not, you might have to reduce other parts of the game to accomodate voice recognition done in software on the console CPU.

With Kinect, it's built in and streamlined.

Furthermore, I don't believe for one second that Sony can deliver, when they haven't even delivered standard VOIP. Just look at BF3 VOIP issues that only plagues the PS3 version....

That said, Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson from Bioware says:

"Kinect’s internal hardware is what makes it possible, not just its microphones."

http://www.kotaku.com.au/20...

Christopher4475d ago (Edited 4475d ago )

***Yeah, but the voice processing is done by Kinect. Does the headset do voice recognition in the hardware? ***

Voice processing is far from intensive. The majority of Kinect's processing is in the image capturing and analysis. And ME3 won't be pushing the hardware anywhere as much as to require any reduction in capabilities. ME2 on the PS3 proved this.

***Furthermore, I don't believe for one second that Sony can deliver, when they haven't even delivered standard VOIP***

You do know that VoIP is standard in the Sony SDK, right? Otherwise I'm wondering how I am able to talk to all those people online, let alone via my Web camera.

What you're talking about is custom cross-game chat, which requires that VoIP be on the PS3 as an added function since you're managing chat outside of the game but on the OS an in line with your friend's list. Two completely separate things.

Not having cross-game chat is far from the same as voice recognition. Far from.

Seriously, voice recognition on ME3 is just to try and sell Kinect in a different way. It's completely possible, without noticeably reducing any other element of the game, on any other HD platform (PC and PS3).

I mean, honestly, if it wasn't done just to sell Kinect as a feature, why isn't it an option on the PC at the least? There's no question whether a PC can handle this, based on your thinking, _intensive_ processing compared to any HD console at the moment.

***i believe socom had it in the ps2 days not entirely sure though.***

They did. Endwar also had it, but they used it on their own without the SDK.

Rainstorm814475d ago (Edited 4475d ago )

EXACTLY THIS^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

gamingdroid4475d ago (Edited 4475d ago )

I will make it short.

***Voice processing is far from intensive. The majority of Kinect's processing is in the image capturing and analysis. And ME3 won't be pushing the hardware anywhere as much as to require any reduction in capabilities. ME2 on the PS3 proved this.***

ME2 existing on PS3 proves nothing and has nothing to do with voice recognition.

To get *accurate* voice recognition, requires significant horsepower and/or significant amount of data.

Why do you think voice recognition on Android phones and iPhones requires internet connection?

It's because it is processed in the cloud on the internet!

Surely none of those devices have issues with storage or even RAM compared to a console.

***I mean, honestly, if it wasn't done just to sell Kinect as a feature, why isn't it an option on the PC at the least? There's no question whether a PC can handle this, based on your thinking, _intensive_ processing compared to any HD console at the moment.***

Of course it is done to sell a product. None of these companies are likely to do anything out of the goodness of their heart.

That said, why would they bother with implementing it on PC when there is not only an additional cost in putting staff members on the task, but also might require a licensing fee for the technology?

The PC almost always comes as an afterthought to console, so if PS3 ain't getting it, you can almost bet the PC ain't getting it.

The Xbox 360 is getting it, because the software is already provided by MS (yet again) and the computing requires almost no processing power due to Kinect i.e. it doesn't tax the console and minimally (if any) takes away resources from the game.

... it couldn't get any clearer, coming straight from the third party developer themselves. It's not just the software, it's the Kinect hardware.

Christopher4475d ago (Edited 4475d ago )

***ME2 existing on PS3 proves nothing and has nothing to do with voice recognition. ***

It proves that it's not pushing the hardware enough to have RAM issues, actually. Which is what you are claiming is one of the things needed to run voice recognition.

***To get *accurate* voice recognition, requires significant horsepower and/or significant amount of data.***

Wrong. You do know that voice recognition has been around since the 90s on PCs that aren't even up to the standard of today's smart phones, right? Even before Naturally Speaking in 1997.

***Why do you think voice recognition on Android phones and iPhones requires internet connection?
***

For two reasons only, because they are updated live without ever having to update the library on the phone nor have it take up space on the phone.

No other reason at all.

***... it couldn't get any clearer, coming straight from the third party developer themselves. It's not just the software, it's the Kinect hardware.***

Right, gamingdroid, and Uncharted 2 is "only possible on the PS3".

You keep believing that. It seems you're believing this type of crap more and more every day.

gamingdroid4475d ago (Edited 4475d ago )

***Wrong. You do know that voice recognition has been around since the 90s on PCs that aren't even up to the standard of today's smart phones, right? Even before Naturally Speaking in 1997.***

... and were they as accurate as they are today?

Clearly not!

The more accuracy, the more processing power and more data needed.

***For two reasons only, because they are updated live without ever having to update the library on the phone nor have it take up space on the phone***

On most phones today on Android and iPhone has plenty of space to store the voice recognition.

Fear of filling up a small fraction of that space is hardly enough reason to force a user to only be able to use voice recognition wherever internet exist.

***It proves that it's not pushing the hardware enough to have RAM issues, actually. Which is what you are claiming is one of the things needed to run voice recognition.***

Still not proving there is enough RAM or processing power to do voice recognition on the fly and still be able to maintain that level of game/technical quality.

It merely proves that the game can run in it's current form on the PS3.

***Right, gamingdroid, and Uncharted 2 is "only possible on the PS3".***

In it's current form, it probably is. That is hardly saying anything though....

***You keep believing that. It seems you're believing this type of crap more and more every day.***

When all else fail attempt to insult.
