PlayStation Vita 3G Data Plans: Rapid Reaction

(IndustryGamers) Experts weigh in on whether Sony should offer the system at a reduced priced with a two-year contract through AT&T. “The 250MB plan is functionally useless, as I'm sure downloading even a single game would run users over the limit. Data plans like this work for phones where you can check email or a browser without using too much data, but I don't see the Vita being used in that way. I think the 250MB plan is just smoke and mirrors to present an ‘affordable’ alternative that will prove to be next to useless once people start actually using the device.”

The thing is the 3G is not MEANT for downloading games. It's meant to have connectivity via PSN to your friends, check trophies, browse the web, etc. The best thing to do is just get the WiFi model and tether an unlimited phone to it, preferably 4G/LTE capable. Simple fix. The Vita is still going to be great. It's already got more support than the PSP had at launch.

Yep, and I'm pretty sure Sony will come out with a 4G model a couple years from now that will allow online play via 4G. 3G is just simply not fast enough and it costs too much for data at the moment for online multiplayer.

That's pretty much it. You can't play games over 3G either, so I'm sure that you can accurately measure your data usage. (download sizes are stated and social networking is minimal).

If youre planning on downloading a lot then simply tether a phone to it as Matt said.

You can play certain games on 3G. Asynchronous games like Hot shots golf can be played on 3G since you take turns.

They are pretty bad. Sony should have just made it like the Kindle and limit the 3G to just social features and Near.

Anyways at least there's the WiFi vita which is the one I am getting.

No point in limiting it imo, more options the better. Many of their games support 3G.

Unit 13 for example sends you notifications when someone on your friends list tops your score and Warrior's Lair (Ruin) sends you a notification when someone invades your lair. You can share content over 3G with Little Big planet

Connectivity really is the major selling point for 3G. Social apps along with the social features implemented in the games.

If ppl are using the 3g expecting to have heavy downloads... lol at them. Just look at all the smartphones out there they provide the fail safe of only downloading at the desired file size

Why didn't Sony add 4G? is that going to be in a hardware update? It just seems weird to want this thing to sell for 10 years and your relying on 3G.

Q: Why didn't Sony add 4G?

well, thats a simple question. how much is the 3G model? $300.

imagine adding 4G. thats increases the cost.

in other words, they're going to wait it out until that tech is cheap to implement, on a future revision.
