Hitman Dev: 'New Metal Gear Proves Stealth Genre Has Changed'

NowGamer: Hitman: Absolution game director Tore Blystad feels increased combat options indicative of a shift in stealth games. (Culture, Hitman: Absolution, IO Interactive, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

I've never played any of the Hitman games as I was afraid it would be too stealthy for my taste. When I saw Run for your Life, I was immediately hooked mainly because of how the game looks and how it plays.

I've played every hotman game since hotman 2, and I loved them. I can also say the from what I've seen I'm confiden that this is the right move for the franchise. The worst thing at developer can do is just retread the same ground over and over again.

Hotman? Would that be the porno versions of the Hitman games?

Sorry, typing on my phone. Stupid fat finger syndrome...

He's not wrong, just look at Splinter Cell Conviction. As fine as that game was, I do wish it was a bit more stealth based.

That said, Hitman Absolution looks really ace.

They're looking to expand their audience - a tricky thing if you don't want to piss off the hardcore.

I liked Hitman because it was thought provoking...you didn't run and gun and it wasn't linear or streamlined like other shooters.

From what I've seen of Absolution it seems to aim for the Splinter Cell: Conviction crowd (mainly teenage boys). They don't have the patience, wits or smarts and IO seems to be adapting Hitman to this lesser audience (hence why the original voice actor was replaced with someone younger and more hip.)

I fear those of us who wanted to play a tension-ridden experience will have to look elsewhere for stealth-based action...the new Hitman looks more action-oriented compared to all the others.

Well thing is. As an ip/franchise ages. Fear sets in the back of the developer's mind. We are doing the same thing over and over!! Lets change it up. Why? We are already making millions, why tamper with formula? When that happens typically if hardcore fanbase dies then game series dies. Unless developer has the doe to let that failure hit it. Like EA. Which I have given up on really counting on great NFS titles. Hot Pursuit is the only NFS for me.

changed for the worse? sure

but all games have, its the dumbing down thing

and what about the fact that a real metal gear is coming? one less action?

so how has it changed?

or is he making an excuse for why his game is the way it is

Stealth genre ALREADY changed before Revengeance. Just look at Metal Gear Acid and Peace Walker. Acid has stealth with turn-based & colectible cards element. Peace Walker got stealth with squad-ops and RPG element (recruit soldiers, build your HQ, etc).

But i'm not sure if Revengeance still have stealth gameplay. The only thing i saw in the trailer is Raiden kill all his enemies without hiding.

Anyway, i'm still waiting for a new Tenchu game. It's so excited to sneak up behind the enemies using poisonus food, wallpaper to blend with the wall, etc.

But...It's not a stealth game...
Hicken  +   1147d ago
^This.

Revengeance has never had the emphasis on stealth that other Metal Gear games had, even before it was Revengeance. Saying a game that isn't about stealth in the slightest is proof that the stealth genre has changed is... well, it's stupid.

"Like the new Metal Gear… I don’t know what the hell that’s all about, but it’s definitely not a tactical espionage game any more."

Sounds like he just has no idea that it isn't metal gear solid 5.

haha sure, stealth. see trhough walls, see the patrol paths of npcs, ai stops reacting once you "hide". Where is the challenge? the accidental deaths? setting everything up for the perfect hit? let me illustrate

Is he talking about Rising? No shit it's not about stealth. It's not trying to be about stealth. It is overtly an action game. What the hell does that have to do with the stealth genre?
Panaru  +   1148d ago
He's...kind of an idiot.
"Like the new Metal Gear...I don't know what the hell all that's about..."

Really? You may want to read up then. No one is calling it a stealth game and the devs are definitely not saying that it is.

stealth games havent changed their just not as appealing to the call of duty crowd and thats what every dev wants to do these days. im not blaming them, games are a business every bit as much as they are an art form. sometimes though, like any artists, if you want to make the game you want, you have to take a potential profit loss. not go claiming how the "genre" has changed to justify why your game is more mainstream
NYC_Gamer  +   1148d ago
any excuse to dumb down the experience for massive appeal
ginsunuva  +   1147d ago
No no no guys it was just a misundetstanding.

Snake says WAR has changed, not stealth has changed.
D3mons0ul  +   1147d ago
MGR isn't even a stealth game. I hate seeing developers say stupid things. I'd expect this from everyday joes like the rest of us but god damn.
Enigma_2099  +   1147d ago
You're using the upcoming Metal Gear game... that they have already stated isn't about stealth... to explain how the stealth genre has changed...

This is a half a**ed excuse you're trying to use to explain all the unnecessary changes you made to the Hitman franchise.
