Microsoft has responded to the latest NPD report.
With a strong holiday sales period finishing a banner year, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 ended 2011 as the best-selling current-generation console in the U.S., outselling the second place console by more than 2.7 million units. Microsoft has now sold more than 66 million Xbox 360* consoles and more than 18 million Kinect* sensors worldwide, and now has nearly 40 million Xbox LIVE members.* ...Congratulations Microsoft...
Not too shabby considering there hasn't been an official price drop for awhile now. Now if only they can do better in the rest of the world.
They are doing amazingly in the UK. I even read somewhere that the 360 could be the biggest selling console ever sold in the UK if sales continue as they are till 2013. Yes even beating the PS2.
not to mention a flow of exclusive titles. It seems to show that diversity supersedes exclusivity when it comes to the 360.
I agreed cause your right. It does show the xbox doesnt need exclusives games to carry it. Also still boggles my mind why the best multi platform games sell better on Xbox 360. Just saying...
They sell better because they have less competition. That's my take, anyway.
'Now if only they can do better in the rest of the world.' This statement would be true if rest of the world didn't simply = Japan. Microsoft has jumped incredible hurdles this gen, but not being popular Japan is just a fact an American console faces against the hometown big boys. But, the fact is Micrsoft dominates in it's home country and is competitive everywhere else. If your going to lose hardware sales anywhere in the world you want it to be Japan. This is mainly because they do NOT buy Western games. Japan has always loved localized games and the rest of the world is completely secondary. Even if Micrsoft had better hardware numbers there, the software catered to western gamers wouldn't have sold. Hey it just the balance of the world as it currently stands. This has been a great Gen for all of the consoles. 2012 is definately going to be interesting Evil
I'm not disagreeing, there are areas they do well but they still don't have the worldwide appeal like Sony and Nintendo do.
You are right but it's getting there. Japan will eventually cave only a matter of time
their persistence in this generation is starting to win over the pessimistic. As if to get some new found respect from those that never thought they would last. That is honorable and in a culture such as a japan, honor is something to really embrace. Maybe they wont win over the hearts completely but if they stay the course and release a 3rd system, that may just be the trick.
MS has indeed had a banner year. Truly amazing to see this console getting a 2nd life if you will. Based on these numbers does MS cut price come March or do they hold off until E3? I just wonder how long they can ride the current price?
I expect a price cut in spring and a new system unveiled at E3 or at their own conference sometime this year with a 2013 launch.
I think they'll hold off on the pricecut and do both at once. That way when the new console is announced people will still continue to buy the 360 due to the pricecut. That's how i'd do it anyways.
Does Everybody but me have shares in Microsoft? Just curious...
No, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn.
my company has a list of companies that our 401k invests in and MS was one of them.
No, everybody has Xbox's and you don't.
Zippy with the elbow from the top ropes..+bubz LOL @ the bitterness exposed from the usual suspects when people comment positively in a SALES article Evil
Actually as something called a gamer I was just curious as to why anybody cares? after all its not money in my bank, nor most of yours so what relevance does it have? oh sorry is that none I hear? Then why are we talking about top ropes and elbow dropping? I think ive arrived at a fanboy picnic, spologies I forgot the sandwhiches.

Looks like Kinect is a resounding success and exclusives are overrated in the bigger scheme of things. Congratulations Microsoft!
