Microsoft just sent word that Xbox 360 sold through a whopping 1.7 million units in December and was the number one selling console in the US during 2011.
Amazing numbers for MS. Congratulations. •Xbox 360 is the best selling console in the US. •66 million Xbox 360′s sold worldwide •18 Million Kinect Sensors sold worldwide •Nearly 40 Million Xbox Live members worldwide I can see MS doing even better this year with a good price cut. Dante below, You care to elaborate and explain what your getting at a little more clearly? They are official numbers. It would be illegal to post false numbers.
So 3.4 million was sold from November to December in the US. I guess Microsoft sold 6.6 million total (lol) in other territories, in those same months for their 66 million units sold to be true, huh. Edit: I guess they're leaders in both Europe and other countries as well last year. Can't wait for the numbers from European countries lol.
18 million shipped on kinect. http://mediakick.org/2012/0...
@Dante112 I don't know what you are trying to say? That said, the 10 million includes October as well. MS are lead in UK, which is the biggest region in Europe and on track to best Wii install base. Pretty impressive if you ask me... without pulling an official price cut out of their hat. I guess they will save it for later.
I do find it interesting how MS stays relevant to the topic of NPD where as Sony (in another article) instead talks world wide numbers. No doubt both platforms have their sweet spots for sales but lets at least try to stay on topic.
This is what happens when you make two years of great moves despite your detractors.. I called this since E3 in June of last year. Back when every media outlet claimed that Micrsoft had a bad E3 showing, I've been saying it was the exact opposite. Micrsoft set up the perfect holiday season and I kept saying by Nintendo phoning it in this year there was literally no competition for Kinect. What you'll see is the momentum is going to carry the 360 number throughout the first quarter. Already Microsoft got smart and set up a Summer of Arcade type event for February w/ I am Alive and 3 others. Then Mass Effect 3 blesses at the beginning of March. Games will flow until June..which is E3 time The swan song 7th year holiday will end with Fable leading for Kinect and Halo 4 smashing retail in November. Wii-U will do great but mark my words, if they still go the nunchuck route and you have a cheaper Kinect which acts like a retail pricedrop on the bundle...then even Wii-U won't beat the 360 next year. At the end of the day..only time will tell Evil
So, just to clarify - we're now believing that Microsoft sold 10 million consoles in the Oct-Dec quarter? That's what we're believing now? That even though the quarter before saw 360 sales drop almost 20% year over year, suddenly, miraculously, Microsoft shifted that momentum and sold 60% more consoles then they did the year before - their best quarter ever? Again...let me know if I'm getting what's being said here. 10 million? Almost 4 million MORE than the last Christmas where Kinect was selling like crazy, there was new hardware and they had a Halo game launch? 10 million? That's what some of you believe? Was there a new continent made entirely of gamers that somehow was just discovered and Microsoft launched there? Take Microsoft's best 360 sales quarter ever, and add 60%. When consumer spending was down this Christmas season... Ok. Just wanted to make sure. I guess we'll find out for sure next week when MS's financials are out. I guess anything's possible, if not probable.
@darkride66 ***So, just to clarify - we're now believing that Microsoft sold 10 million consoles in the Oct-Dec quarter? That's what we're believing now? That even though the quarter before saw 360 sales drop almost 20% year over year, suddenly, miraculously, Microsoft shifted that momentum and sold 60% more consoles then they did the year before - their best quarter ever?*** So are you saying MS is lying? You know the sort of thing that could get them in trouble with the SEC, and subjected to lawsuits over a silly sales number.... ***Almost 4 million MORE than the last Christmas where Kinect was selling like crazy, there was new hardware and they had a Halo game launch? 10 million? That's what some of you believe?*** Sony sold less than 2 million consoles in the US, of the roughly 4 million announced worldwide. That's about double for WW. MS announced roughly 4 million for the two months, November and December, in US. Double that for WW and add October and you are well within range of 9-10 million consoles sold. ***Was there a new continent made entirely of gamers that somehow was just discovered and Microsoft launched there? Take Microsoft's best 360 sales quarter ever, and add 60%. When consumer spending was down this Christmas season...*** Sort of... casual gamer spending tends to concentrate around Holidays and through friend referral and first hand experience (maybe through a friend) unlike early adopters and core gamers.
As usual the fanboys now claim MS is lying when the numbers don't go the way they expected.
...(Michael Buffer Voice)... Congratulations Microsoft
Great numbers, how many did they sell in December 2010?
wow,that is crazy.
Down yoy I think. Not great numbers for MS
You serious? 1.7 m * $200 (average cost of console i think..) Do the maths.
10m from Oct-Dec wordwide is far from bad. This is just U.S. for one month.
Yeah a solid number, but it does show a decline of 8.6%, which is odd since thought Nov was up huge.
With no official price cuts to boost sale, that is a very strong result. It's hard to top 1.8 million in November. @GameTavern Well you have to look at the industry as a whole, so the real question is what is the competition doing? I expected a huge decline with no price cut in sight with stronger competition ...not 10 million sold in one quarter Worldwide. edit: Sony sold 3.9 million in about 1.5 months during the holiday season worldwide. That is the best selling time of the year. http://www.videogamer.com/n... I don't remember seeing anything from Nintendo regarding Wii... maybe somebody else can enlighten?
That's a really good point about price cuts, the 360 hasn't had a real one in years. Hopefully these numbers will push MS towards doing one.
They wouldn't need a price cut because the 4gig model is meant for the casual gamer and anything above that is to compete with the ps3 which doesn't have a real entry level machine.
They do have a second sku that sells for 199 which is less than sony. And those were going on sale with 75 dollar credit during the holidays from time to time which makes it 125 dollars so my guess is that had to be most of these sales. It is like how ps2 sold when it was at those levels. So gamingdroid no need to question the competition when they are doing well for themselves and hitting their sales targets which is 15 million in the fiscal year. ofcourse they would love to do more but hey xbox is popular in US this gen and it will take a lot to outsell them here in the US.
@ksense ***They do have a second sku that sells for 199 which is less than sony. I expected some of the Black Friday deals to pop up closer to Christmas, but they never did. During BF, MS had a $60 GC for a 4GB Xbox 360 S priced at $200 and Sony had a PS3 160GB bundled with a game for $250 with a $50 GC.
It should be clarified that these are US numbers and not worldwide numbers.
Thanks for helping those people with "US" blindness. Just in case they missed it at the top of the page.
But Steve Balmer confirmed that the xbox was the best selling console of 2011 WORLDWIDE and if he was lying then he would be arrested.
lmao @ Yoda! SMH
MS continues a strong 2011. 1.7million in Dec. for US only... 66 Million now worldwide according to the CES 2012 Keynote. It's been a good showing for MS.
And I was one of those 1.7 million.
LOL, you're going to get heat for that with an Uncharted avatar bro.
Why get heat... he is just a gamer and a gamer loves games. The 360 is a great console. . . I just hope that MS concentrates a little more on great exclusives and not Kinect but for them Kinect is good business and I assume its the reason why the 360 is still selling that well. Good for U Fel08. . . and do urself a favor and buy the Gears trilogy, Alan Wake, Metro 2033 and Kameo Elements of Power... its just $4.99. Ohh and if you like RPGS you could play some of the best on the 360 ... specially Last Odyssey!!
I also recommend Mass Effect, it's best played on the Xbox 360 due to the character import in ME2 and of course Kinect support in ME3. Other awesome games, Halo and Splinter Cell: Conviction. My favorite by far for online though is, Gears of War 3!!!
I dont give 5 fks about Kinect on ME3... and no Mass Effect is best played on PC. Splinter Cell Conviction is the worst Splinter Cell and Halo is like COD more of the same... I prefeer Kameo over all of these... LOL A matter of taste I guess.
Well said Astaroth. Took the words right out of my mouth. And thanks for the recommendations.
Wrong, Mass Effect is best played on PC. Looks better and runs alot better on PC then 360.
good to see its continued success, i still love my xbox. also its very good for ms as their worldwide sales are signifanctly more impressive than the original xbox.
good, now can you give us games M$?
http://buttonmashing.com/wp... http://farm4.static.flickr.... xbox players. They dont have any games to play ):
Nice I have about 90 myself
i love my 360! congrats ms!
And with some games on the way (yeah, multiplatform), my XBox 360 will be in use a lot this year.
In 6 years Xbox 360 has dropped only $100. What are they waiting for?
Well to be honest the closet sku they had at launch was $400 but it's still crazy that after 6 years it has only gone down to $200.
What do you want it to go down to? $100?
Those PS3 exclusives are doing their job i see
good for microsoft and sony, just keep the gaming industry alive because its my favorite hobbie.
The 360 was the only console (handhelds not included) to even break 1 million this month, and boy did it break 1 million! Although we don't have the exact Wii or PS3 numbers yet, we know this because it has been reported that the DS and 3DS are the only platforms to see an increase over November, and Wii and PS3 were both under 1 million in November.
I'm not buying 360 until it has more exclusive games that catch my interest and why buy it for multiplat games if i have a Ps3 don't see why i should invest when the Ps3 is getting great games from first party Devs.
Yea your right you have alot more games on it(i have ps3)and i buy most of my exclusives on games but i dont buy mul ti platform games on it,i use that for 360. Because the community is awesome and online features and out of the best exclusive ive played is halo and gears. And i know you heard of these two
Who should care about exclusives when you have top triple A third party tiles on the market that can beat any first party exclusive. MS has done a good job marketing the 360 releasing a few exclusives per year and letting the thirdnparty titles sell the system. Having a long list of exclusives releasing per year may be a thing of the past because top triple A third party titles outsell them every year.
Who cares about exclusives when you have third party games you can play on other platforms? Are you serious? Pay attention ladie and gentlemen, this is a true fanboy.
@Nexus-Knight Wake me up whenever Nexus Knight gets off the god damn sony high horse, screws off and plays game for the mindless enterainment and experience. ZZzZzzzzZZZZzzz....
@Nexus-Night Your right, why should you invest in a 360? How bout just stick with your ps3 and keep your ignorant troll comments to yourself.
I have enough games as it is on 360
I must admit, MS are good at making money.
That's impressive, congrats to Microsoft! :)
