The real kick in the teeth for all these other game developers is that GT5 runs at 60fps at 1080p! Most of these other game developers (like EA for example) could barely get their games to run at 30fps at 720p. Really shows how lazy these PS3 ports are. All we hear from them is "how difficult the PS3 is to code for" (Boo Hoo you're breaking my heart) when the reason for the sloppy ports is that they just can't be bothered to put the time into the PS3 version.

I don't consider them lazy. I just think PS3 games need to be developed from the start for the PS3. If you develop the game for the PC and 360 and port it to the PS3 you'll get a good game but not a great game. A lot of developers are now coming out and talking about this. You make the PS3 game and port to the 360. The 360 isn't as powerful so it will still come out good and nobody will notice. When you port to the PS3 though you get mediocre graphics. The PS3 deals with video different from how the 360 and PC do. You have to get the most from the smaller amount of PS3 video RAM, which is also very fast.

ps3 is difficult to code for as is every new piece of tech. xbox 360 architecture is very similar to computers so there is little or no learning curve and wii essentially is a game cube under the hood so jst use old game cube code. With time ps3 ports andgames will get better jst need to give devs a while to get more used to the tech. UT3 runs amazing on ps3 despite ps3's long history of unreal engine issues. Epic will provide their UT3 code for ps3 to all unreal engine purchasers so UE3 development should see significant improvement. Getting GT5 out of the difficulty of the ps3 architecture deserves tons of credit so props to polyphony

This game is just a taste of GT5 and it scored hiher than all of the best 360 racers. i am getting this game when it reaches our shores on day one.

I was going to say how much I hate racing simulations and that they are boring and how it will not move many copies but than I look at the wikipedia numbers and i'm wow'd. 14.87 million copies of Grand Turismo 3 and 9.52 copies of Gran Turismo 4. Gran Turismo 3 sold more copies than Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII, and Metal Gear Solid 3 COMBINED.

Now if only Racing Simulations weren't so boring.. if they made a more arcade-like Racer I would definitely pick up a Playstation 3 for that.

Have you tried playing GT3 or 4 in "Arcade" mode? sure you can play it all realistic, but if you go into arcade mode its straight in racing, you can even choose a bit of rally if you like. Its not the real way to play GT, but the Arcade mode is great for a quick blast, especially good with a Logitech FF Steering Wheel.

I can't waith for GT5p.. I think this is the game that makes me plonk down the readies for a G25 Logitech Wheel as well, I will only ever play GT with a wheel, and my old GT3 branded FF wheel has seen better days.. good excuse in my book! :)

The changes they have made really could put this up there as the best Gran Turismo of all time - unusual for a series to get better after it has been around this long, but we've recently seen the same thing with the Super Mario series...

I doubt it will receive a full 40/40 from Famitsu though, even when the full game arrives - and I certainly can't imagine any western publications/websites giving the game a score as good as this.

Forza 2 does a lot of things right. It's a great racing simulator and has lots of content to play around with.

It can't compete with GT5 graphically though. GT5 looks to be something very special. Does anyone know how many cars/tracks it will include from start? I hope there's at least 200 cars from start. I heard rumors that you will have to pay for them them as downloadable content. GT5 might be the game that makes me consider getting a PS3.

If by, "from the start" means the amount of cars included in the game (Gran Turismo 5 I'm talking about here, not prologue), then I think theyve said its over 900, there was 700 in Gran Turismo 4, so they will only improve. You have to "buy" some of the cars in-game to unlock them for play in splitscreen I think (using in-game currency, not realy money).

I still think the level of cusomization in Forza 2 is unparallelled. It's a whole different experience than GT and I don't think it's fair to compare them. If I hade to choose one I'd go with GT5, but Forza 2 is still a great experience and delivers hardcore simulation. IMO it gets a little too heavy at times; adjusting cambers and wheel tilting etc just isn't that hot lol!

As an avid racing fan and car enthusiast I will say that Forza 2 nailed it best in terms of how a car drives for a console racing game. I love the GT series but they have felt arcadey at best, especially the bump n run into 1st place style of racing. If GT5 delivers a new engine that matches Forza 2, the graphics will be worth it. Sadly I have my serious doubts since GT3 for me disappointed followed only by GT4 which disappointed even more. I refuse to buy a demo to a game. That's what this is. I will buy GT5 in 4 yrs or whenever it comes out.

but god I hope they put ONLY the actual cars people want to drive and not a Nike prototype or Ford Model T, Another realm where Turn10 nailed it... look at the latest car and track back for Forza 2 = Road America and cars like the E30 M3, Audi Sport Quattro and Renault 5 Turbo!

I think someone said it best... the AI and physics better be VASTLY improved, otherwise GT5 will be another Pokemon style digital car collectible game like it's predecessors and nothing more. If you want a racing simulator, look towards PCs. GT series does rank up their in my book as the top 3 for consoles but it is not THE racing simulator

as I have NEVER played a Gran Turismo anything(full game, demo, whatever) that I didn't like. The problem is that this is practically prime material for the trolls to rally around. They're running out of material enough as it is, and that's especially evident with WilliamBakers pathetic little quip, but people have been saying some pretty outlandish stuff about this game. I've heard people claim that there will be 0 jaggies, the physics will be better than anything, the graphics will look twice as good, etc.

All it takes is one of those to not be fulfilled and we'll never hear the end of it...those idiots don't offend me, but it's just getting old. I guess what I'm trying to say is we should use some discretion in what we say, because the dumbest things are being used against us these days, and I'm ready to see it end.

I'm sure the game will be great though, I'm loving the c*ckpit view in the demo, and it feels top notch.

If they think Prologue is that good it most likely is. GT3 on the PS2 was great so I think Polyphony Digital will really do amazing things on the PS3.

This is not speculation based on preview code and hype like the other titles you mention, this is totally different! This is playable cars on playable tracks and full online racing. No excuses. Playable code they can spend as much time with as they like. I've not known Famitsu to issue scores based on hype, so a score of this magnitude for a delivered product indicates something very special indeed. The full game will obviously have a lot more of the same, but the developers would have to break the engine significantly to make the full GTA worse than the Prologue version.

If that's true, so it will be annoing to race short 1,8 km circut in London with only 8 corners as in the Prologue.

The ram in the PS3 is 512megs it just split...but the Cell and the RSX can use all 512.

The ram in the xbox 360 is unified at 512megs....and it can stream textures from the DVD drive or Harddrive but mostly just from the DVD drive since not all Xbox 360s have harddrives. On the PS3 all PS3s have harddrive so developers can stream textures from the harddrive or the bluray disc....or both at the same time.

2. I'm a motorcyclist and I love the bikes in PGR and I'm not a massive car racing fan. That being said. I donloaded GT5P demo the night it came out in japan and think the game looks unbelievably stunning. More so than any car game in the past.

welcome to not only a taste of GT but a taste of 2008. 2008 IS sony's make or break year. With games like this coming out I am going with the former... look for GT to be the best in the series and the best racing simulator in history. Look for MGS to be the best in the series and the best stealth action game in history. Look for LBP to explode in Japan, the US, and Europe. Watch for MMO's to really kick off in Japan. Look for KZ2 to be much improved over its first installment (cant really say more cuz I am kinda skeptical). Look for the Getaway to be the best in the series. Look for Resistance 2 to be better than the original. Look for FF to be THE beast graphically for years to come... Yeah I guess 2008 is looking up for Sony.

Look, its not that simple. GOW2, MGS3, and FFXII didn't sell 120 million copies. I guess they were no good too huh? Gamers have different tastes. You have to include the fact that there are different age ranges that own a ps2 by now. My 4th and 2nd grade cousins have each of their own. I'm pretty sure they won't be playing those 3 games. My uncle bought a ps2 as a dvd player just as he bought a ps3 for bluray movies only. If you don't like simulators that's fine. To each his own but you can't just say that because only 8% bought the last GT, its boring. I've never been a fan of arcade racing like Ridge racer but I won't say its sucks cuz I know a lot of gamers (like yourself) find it amazing so good for you. It's just not my cup of tea. Am a GT fan 1st PS3 fan 2nd. I bought ps3 for GT(and MGS) and am not buying GT for PS3. GT3 sold 10 million copies relatively on in ps2 lifecycle way before it sold 10million copies. GT is the highest selling driving or racing franchise by far. I have the prologue demo and judging from that alone this is the best of the bunch. They really stepped their game up with the incar racing view and the 16 cars on track. Also the physics and A.I. have been bumped up significantly. Gran turismo introduced lots of european cars into the american market so in a sense not only is it a ps3 seller but its a car seller too. Gran turismo dosent only appeal to gamers it appeals to car fans as well.

While I don't at all doubt that GT5 will be a masterpiece, and probably worthy of a perfect score...there's a logical problem with Prologue getting a 39/40. That means that all of the hundreds of additional cars as well as the additional tracks, modes, and features that the full version of GT5 will contain are only worth a maximum of 1/40 points.

It seems unlikely and illogical that the full version of GT5 will only be 3% better than the Prologue which doesn't even contain half the content.

That's not how things work. Since scores are subjective, they don't "measure" the game. So no, 40/40 isn't "just 3% better" than 39/40. Besides, GT5 might as well get the same score or even below that. I think the score simply reflects how well the game does what it's supposed to do at the price tag it's being sold (I don't think it's full price).

I agree with you to an extent also, but again, I doubt both games are launching at the same price tag. Furthermore, I don't agree that more content necessarily means a better score. It could mean a better score (games like warhawk, motorstorm, heavenly sword and uncharted would have benefited from more content, as they're too short), but when you have an online mode and a 30 hour or more single player mode (or a 60 hour single player game), then adding 60 more hours can hardly help your score, or at least not as much as the initial hours. It's also about substance, quality, not amount of content or quantity. I seriously doubt that getting 500 cars would guarantee a better score than 300 cars.

I agree as it relates to comparing scores between two different games, but we're talking about an expanded version of the same game scoring only one point higher than it's "Demo" (for lack of a better term). Scores are subjective, but they are also reflective of content. For instance, if a game is released and it scores a 9.0...then a Game of the Year edition of the same game is released with all the content of the original plus extra stuff...one would expect it to score slightly higher due to the added value.

Since it's being scored separately, let's just for a minute pretend that Prologue is a different game from GT5. If you have two games that play identical to each other (in this case GT5 and Prologue), but one has Hundreds of additional cars, tracks, content, modes etc. Wouldn't you expect the one with the wealth of content to score more than one point higher than the bare bones one? So either way, the score doesn't make sense. Just my opinion and scoring method though, I understand everyone views it differently.

They are the longest running most respected games publication in a country thats been obsesive about video games for far longer than we in the west have.

18 + years ago I was importing this title through the Japan travel centre at ST Pauls in London, and learning Japanese, just so I could keep up with Gaming news. In the west it was still seen as a kids thing and those of us seriously into games relied on publications like Famitsu to keep us up to date with the state of video games.

This is no crappy website reviewers, no Gamespot. If Famitsu give this title 39/40, its because its a genre defining game thats been superbly implimented.

i'm a 360 fan and i can't deny how amazing gt5 looks. but but when you think about it gt5 took 5 editions to get where it is in terms of graphics and gameplay. forza is only in its 2 edition and its already got the trump card on gt5 in terms of gameplay physics custom cars etc...yes its destroyed in term of graphics though by gt5, but you have to think, what will forza be like when it gets to its 5 edition if they keep pulling out the stops like that. so which game has the better groth potential?

Whilst I like Froza, it really isn't the complete article for me, and GT games still have a special place in my heart from the PSX and PS2 games before.
Whilst I do appreciate your point about the potential for new franchises like Forza to close the gap over the coming years, you seem to be assuming that GT will not continue to be developed! As much as those other games are developed so will GT, and I believe they have a decent head start!

I look forward to other franchises getting better, but to me, GT has always been the best 'racing sim' and this evolution of it would suggest that it will always be improved to be the 'best of breed'.

At the end of the day, its about what game you can play at home at any one time in history. Once this game is released, it will be very unlikely I'll boot up forza 2, and forza 3 will have to be a massive evolution to get any kind of look in too!

Keep in mind that the first GT came out in 1998 (9 years ago) at that time PSX isn't powerful enough and also the idea of a driving simulator had just been created. With Forza being release only 2 years ago Microsoft Game Studios had the hardware not to mention ideas from the GT series. It makes more sense to compare Forza (2005) & Forza 2 (2007) with GT4 (2005) & GT5 (2008). Am I right or am I wrong? Anyways, both series are great but Gran Turismo series will continue to be the flagship driving simulator.

i jst wanna give a shout out to the mart and power of green. The satisfaction of this 39/40 couldnt have been possible without you guys. I remember when you guys said GT5 couldnt look as good as GTHD because it only feautured 1 car and by the time they add cars the graphics would suffer. I suspect you actually meant GT5 couldnt look as good as GTHD because forza dosent look as good as it or no xbox racer for that matter. Famitsu reviews are BS. I live in Japan and every Japanese kid knows this.Im not saying GT aint great,but every one saying "great score" and stuff like that dont know sh1t.Ive got one issue of the magazine where they had a review of nearly every 360 game and you wouldnt believe some of the scores.

here is the general Japanese gamers opinion.
It is said that publisher/developer can buy the famitu review score.
It's because there were several titles that famitu review was bad score but users evaluation was high or its reverse in the past.
It's the same situation with IGN, Gamespot and other game site and magazine reviews.
You know, famitu is a magazine. Many magazines are consisting of ad revenue.

Anyway 39/40 is not from famitu review, this week's famitu issue didn't review GT5P.

Okay then.There are 32 reviews in the issue i have.The lowest rating being 32 and the highest being 39.I suppose youve already done the math,but that means that every game has got a 8+.

of couse a sony game like GT is gonna get top marks from famitsu. not surprised. i bet they didnt even play it and still gave it a ten. and its a demo that cost money. oh an i bet it wont be native 1080p when the real full game comes, another sony trick.

I have been a gamer since 1980 and played many race games. VERY few race games captivate me enough for a serious sit down.

I got my hands on the GT5P a few nights ago and have to say I am really impressed!

First, when I seen graphical comparisons between Forza2 and GT5, I thought GT5 had better cars but terrible looking tracks compared to Forza2. The track in the GT5 demo actually looks quite stellar. When the graphics are viewed in replay mode, this game looks very photo realistic. Most impressive replays i've ever seen.

I read someone complain about the physics in a previous post. I think the physics are absolutely top notch! This game may have the best physics of any racing game i've ever played(and i've play many I assure you). I would describe the physics, but it is difficult and tedious to do. You really have to experience it yourself to understand.

Some people praise Forza for the ability to tweak tune the cars. Personally, I prefer a simpler approach. I'm not a mechanic. I just won't give a game the time of day if I have to tweak and tune. That drives me nuts! I just want a great driving experience, not a heavy mind numbing hour long tweak session. GT5 (in my opinion) is set up perfectly. You adjust traction control, stability control, and a few other minor options and thats it! Right to gameplay as it should be!

I am also impressed with the sound. No music during gameplay (which I prefer). Cars sounds are a little weak, but adequate. The road noise and tire skidding sounds are very well done. I wiped out on a corner from getting to rambunctious on the brakes and slid sideways for about 50 Ft. I was in first person mode and could hear all four tires around me making a skidding as I finally came to a stop. I thought, WOW! That sounded awesome!

The only issue I see right now with GT5P is the framerate does drop in spots during replay mode. This doesn't bother me, but some may be more critical than I.

If I was a Professional reviewer I would give this game a:

Funfactor - 10
This is what is selling the game for me. An absolute blast!

Graphics - 9.5
Very well done! Photo realistic, hi-res. Tracks could have more detail.

Performance - 9.0
Great framerate throughout gameplay. Replays have minor dips is FPS.

Sound - 9.0
Road noise and tires sound incredible in Dolby Digital 5.1. Car sounds are a little weak.

Bottom line - 9.4
So far, this is the best racing game\driving simulator I've ever played! Exceeded my expectations.
