What the PlayStation 4 Needs to Lead the Next Generation

PlayStation 4 rumors have been heating up as of late, with many people expecting its long-awaited announcement sometime this year. It’s inevitable as the PlayStation 3 is now over five years old, and Nintendo has put pressure on Sony with the debut of the Wii U at E3 last year. It’s not a matter of if but when, and as we learned this generation, a strong launch can cement a console’s lead. - PSLS

*Sakaguchi given a truckload of money to come back and lead the Final Fantasy 16 project.*

Pre-emptive Q: "But why 16 and not 15?"
A: Because 15 is already in planning and I want the Gooch to be able to start from scratch. :)

There will be no 'leader' in next generation. There is no true 'leader' in this gen, regardless of what many want to think. The area in which games are being served has many areas of expertise. The Wii is in its own domain, the 360 and PS3 in their own. The services the 360 and PS3 deliver vary greatly and depend on what people want.

Here are my list of things (in no particular order) I believe Sony can do to make sure they are still relevant and able to compete well in the next generation of consoles.

1. Invest heavily in OS design and development or work with a third-party for OS needs. This generation has proven that console hardware just isn't enough in this day and age, you need a solid software foundation in order to support and build upon for various features. The Vita has shown some signs of improvement, but that is far from good enough when it comes to a home console system.

IMHO, the best solution for them would still be to team up with Google on the OS, making sure that they can maintain certain control of their gaming software and security while giving Google a far-reaching platform from which to extend their OS development goals.

2. Keep the hardware non-proprietary. This generation they did a good job allowing generic 2.5" SATA HDDs, a wide array of memory cards, Blutooth devices, and USB devices. Keep this up. Don't do a PSVita.

3. Use a higher rate BD drive. While it's likely the future of most games with 1080p graphics will require HDD installs, there are inexpensive BD drives out there that have a constant data rate that outperforms the DVD9 drives variable rate. Get the best BD drive you can in that so that we get back to an age where HDD aren't mandatory but optional.

4. Maintain backwards compatibility. The ability to play all PS3 disc-based games as well as PSN games should be required. We're not going to see a huge leap anytime soon in the mass market in regards to TV resolutions, so the current games on the PS3 will still be relevant and should be playable on any device that is intended to replace the PS3.

5. Having said that, it should replace the PS3. Sony has made a big deal out of being able to have a PS3 and a PS2. No. The next thing should replace the PS3 in the home, not operate as its own game system and requiring the PS3 for PS3 functionality and features.

6. Invest in online infrastructure. Dedicated servers for VoIP and multiplayer games. Centralized API for various Internet functionality (chat, notification, updates, video uploads, etc.).

7. Don't rush development teams. Any of them. Uncharted 3 was a great game, but it could have been greater if it wasn't rushed to a November release. Perhaps this was a Naughty Dog decision, not a Sony decision, but you should have supported them and aided them to make the best game possible, meaning more play testing and feedback and enough time to work on Uncharted 3 and their new IP.

8. Shup up with the arrogance and lame PR speak. Let your product speak for itself, let your services speak for themselves, let your games speak for themselves. Don't tell us you're the best, show us. Actions speak louder than words.

9. Work with your third-parties. Don't buy them out, but make it so that they can't refuse putting their game on your console because of how easy it is to program, how much help you offer, the services you provide, and similar features.

The Gooch, lol. That made me laugh. Here's a bubble.

GraveLord2203d ago

All it needs is an exclusive Call of Duty and it'll sell like hotcakes.

GribbleGrunger2203d ago (Edited 2203d ago )

trust me, the PS brand hasn't been the most successful brand because of games like that. diversity is key to Sony's success.

@below. Sony already have a pad released, ready to be used on the PS3 and when the PS4 releases. it's called the Vita. and Blu-ray didn't grab enough attention?! where are you living? Mars?

dark-hollow2203d ago

But you gotta admit that a proper cod game could be the vita strongest killer app.

Pikajew2203d ago

No no one wants to play COD multiplayer on a handheld.

silvacrest2203d ago

how the hell would you know?

COD on the only handheld that could properly support it (dual analogs, wifi+3G, powerful enough so it almost looks as good as the console version)
sounds like a huge money maker to me

sony and acti must know this gap exists...

stormeagle62203d ago

The CoD games on DS, while nothing spectacular, were better than I expected them to be.

Considering past experiences, i would say the ps4 needs a pad.... Yes a pad, with a big glowing bulb on it.

Nintendo got a pad, and its rumored that MS will introduce one too, Sony cant stay behind, so get us a pad!

Or, try to get ahead of the competition, put something out that the competition doesnt have, and that grabs the attention of the consumers.

Blu ray was a nice addition to the ps3, but it didnt grab enough attention, all the attention went to a shaky white rod that led to a slew of youtube video's filled with television armeggadon.

trenso2203d ago

If Sony keeps giving me great games to play like this gen I'll be ok with that

koehler832203d ago

A head start wouldn't hurt.
