One of the first Western reviews for Final Fantasy XIII-2 is in, courtesy of Game Informer. The magazine had a couple of pressing issues with the title, but still gave it a great deal of praise.
10 years ago, it would be unheard of and suprising for a Final Fantasy game to get an 8. How did my favourite video game series of all time fall down to the levels of a sewer and how to get out of it?
10 years ago Square was still producing rpg's With FF10 and up they started to put out cut scene driven movie games, instead of rpg's.
*Facepalm* Just go back and remake FF6, 7, 8, and 9... At least then Square can't possibly mess up those masterpieces, with all the dialogue, characters, and world already there. They just have to do graphics right... Then again, this is Enix we're talking about, not Squaresoft, so maybe they can... :\
snookies12 if you really think they cant mess up those games i highly doubt it as much as a i want a ff7 remake i have no faith in them this gen they have sucked and anything they touch this gen will suck even remakes
Indeed, i can already see what a remade FF7 would be like. Square would call it a streamlined product, where materia can no longer be equiped, but is attached to a weapon by default. This so that the player doesnt have to go out and look for materia anymore. They would remove the chocobo breeding system, and instead let us breed summons, and store them in little balls. The world map would be removed, square would call it a more cinamatic experience, where players no longer have to think what direction to go. Also it would have a card system, the cards would replace gold, because squares world is so awesome, money would no longer be required. They do would introduce EXP as an awesome and totally new feature, but the EXP will only apply to a silly rating system that nobody wants. Leveling will now no longer occur, not even trough a silly grid, winning this game will now be based on pure luck, yes luck. This luck comes from little potions that can be created trough an insanely annoying mini game, if you run out of luck potions, your screwed and game over. I could go on, but i dont wanna give square too many idea's, they got eyes everywhere.
@Foxgod: The thing I'm most worried about a FFVII remake is that Square might add things from the Compilation, like Genesis or The Deepground SOLDIERs. Or they might cut out parts like Cloud crossdressing or Chocobo Racing or the snowboarding scene because they might be seen as "too silly" for the remade game.
You don't ask for remakes, when the people who work @ SE tell you that "it'd be difficult... too many townz" -____________________-
i say bring back Yasumi Matsuno and make FFXII-2. I'd totally want another game in the "mature" Ivalice world (not the one seen in FFT gba games)
"The reviewer is particularly critical of the game’s story, describing it as “laughable and borderline insulting” and states that the game “screws it up at every turn”. Juba even said that it’s one of his favorite RPGs from a mechanical standpoint. He believes that “If you can detatch yourself from the absurd story, the wealth of content and fun mechanics are extremely satisfying”." Interesting. So they got the gameplay right, but not the story? I'm curious as to 'what' is causing these paradoxes anyway. Well, it doesn't matter, I'm waiting for this be blown widely out of proportion on N4G within the next hour.
I have a feeling that they created a "complicated" and "convoluted" story on purpose and at the end it's just full of plot-holes and nonsense. that's just a feeling.
This is just like FFX-2, pretty decent gameplay but everything else sucks. Very Toriyama indeed. Square shouldn't let that guy direct any other FF game, he should go back to do more simple stuff like director of events or something else. And even then after 3rd Birthday I wouldn't want him close to anything FF. He was the one that came up with the horrible plot device about time travel for 3rd Birthday and ruined the overall story with gimmicks.
I agree about Toriyama. Keep Kitase and Nomura in charge of FF and it'll be ok.
Sewer? an 8? really?
They messed up the battle system.
Lets see game informers FF reviews FF7......9.75 FF8......9.5 FF9......9.75 FF10.....9.75 (2002) FF10-2...9.5 FF13-2....8 !!!! Hence i was correct in saying that 10 years ago, you wouldnt see major FF games getting an 8 (maybe i should have said GameInformer specifically) It hurts to see my favourite series of all time going down the toilet, while i cant do anything about it.....it really really does
Ever since Squaresoft merged with Enix, the quality of the Final Fantasy franchise has been on a decline. FFX being the last Final Fantasy made by Squaresoft. From there on out, each game has progressively received a lower score, or close to that extent. The quality games that have been put out by SE, aside from The World Ends With You and some old remakes, have been developed by other studios, and published by SE, such as Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
Even FFX though was the beginning of where it went wrong. Running down endless corridors because they decided a world map wasn't important anymore. It was still a good game but I preferred the four before it much more.
its actually sad that Game Informer gave FF13 a 9.25 and bought into the hype and then turn around and give FF13-2 a 8 when in fact FF13-2 is BETTER than 13. You can say the story sux but when every other part of the game is improved how can you score it lower than the original? 13 should have been a 8 and 13-2 should be a 8.5
The reviewer does compliment the game's graphics, its level amount of content, its freedom and its battle system so its not all doom and gloom. I would prefer if FF was the way it was but nothing lasts forever. I think people on here like to hate too much. This is about business. If SE feels westernisation will be more profitable than using traditional formula, then westernisation it is. Though bad story aside, what is this game doing wrong either? Edit: The reviewer criticises the story because too many mysteries are explained as being paradoxes. Didn't MGS4's story receive a lot of praise when many of the mysteries in the game were explained as being caused by nano-machine implants?
That's not a plot device tho...a paradox is an easy cop out explanation in most stories that try really hard to have an unexplainable twist. It's rarely done correctly and elegantly. Some good examples are the movie donnie darko, inception etc or games like legacy of kain soul reaver series or FF8. Furthermore, nano machines are not like paradoxes because they can't just spring out of nowhere to save a plot hole in the story. They are introduced right away and also are an actual real world technology so its not like the writers of mgs just wrote it in to explain everything.
About the nano-machines. That plot device was there since MGS2. I feel people ignored that completely. It wasn't pulled out of their ass last minute to explain things, it was there the whole time and an intended part of the story.
Bad story and music in a FF game = skip. I don't care if it got a 1 or 10, story and music are most important in a FF game. I liked XIII enough but if the story's bad and the music's forgettable then I'll just write this off no matter how much better everything else is.
Couldn't agree more.
"How did my favourite video game series of all time fall down to the levels of a sewer and how to get out of it?" An 8 out of 10 is now considered sewer material?
Square Enix is to blame. Bring back the old Square soft. You know that company who knew how to make great JRPGs. Anyway Final Fantasy has always been about a good story. If it doesn't have a good story then whats the point in playing a game based on fantasy.
So now games that get 8s are in the sewers... I hate people who act like an 8 is a terrible score. Gamers are such a fickle bunch. Its too bad the game isn't deserving of 10s, but an 8 is still a solid score. I can't think of another franchise with 15 entries that is still getting good review scores.
An eight IS a lower score these days. Look at how easy it is for a game to get a 9/10 these days. It's like every other big name title (from a publisher with deep pockets) gets a 9+ on average.
"10 years ago, it would be unheard of and suprising for a Final Fantasy game to get an 8" 10 years ago, the entire industry/culture wouldn't have considered an 8 to be a devastating score, nor would an 8 have BEEN such a low score (in comparison to how titles tend to score in the present).
You also have to remember that reviewers ....especially Mr. Juba, are a bit jaded when it comes to this. Sure he said the game mechanics are great and the content is good, just that the story kills it and blah blah blah. I like XIII and I am sure I will like XIII2. So what if he gave it an "8"....that's his opinion....I will NEVER make a purchase decision based on a review. I try the demo and go on what I like....I liked XIII so this will be a definite purchase for me.
Lets hope this game fails so SE doesnt make FF13-3. Unfortunately the best of the 8 endings of FF13-2 says "to be continued..." and Square Enix has bought the web domains FF13-2.com to FF13-9.com So things aint looking good, i wont be surprised if they make 13-3, since they are so out of touch with fans...
And yet doesn't this end with "To Be Continued?"
To be fair, so did Dirge of Cerberus (well..kind of. It had an open ending). And we still haven't seen a sequel to that game.
"To be continued" once you have all the fragments... Yes it's a open ending game but there is a end
Not really an end, Genesis comes back, he says he needs to do something and that's it. Not much of an ending IMO
Most FF consumers these days are the rpg equivelance of COD consumers. They buy it because its FF, and totally ignore the quality of the game.
Can you imagine if they delayed FFvs even more to release FFXIII-3 by early 2013? XD
I swear, if Square does announce FF13-3...
an 8/10 is not bad though. edit: But he does say that the story is really crappy.
The backstage politics in game review land have ruined the scoring system, these days an 8 is only one point away of a major stink fest. An 8 pretty much means the product is flawed.
Yeah, game review scores have gotten way out of hand. These numbers mean nothing.
However the score is completely discarded because of the score they gave to the original. With better "everything but story", it just can't be worse than FFXIII
I was able to play FF13 while reading a book and constantly keeping one button pressed down, i might as well have taped it stuck, its indeed hard to make something like that worse. But remember, its square.
it's no good to lie
Dude by the time you fight the first summon that wouldn't work. And that's less than an hour in.
He might be exaggerating, but not by much. Auto-battle works for everything except maybe the summon battles in which the only change is looking for moments to heal, Barthandalus where he's not the same every battle but you're still just looking for moments to heal, and Pulse. FFXIII's battle system is almost completely hands off it's that bad.
Almost every complaint was lodged towards the story. Which is unfortunate, but expected (like X-2.) He also criticized the soundtrack. Other than that, he said it exceeds the original in almost every way, and is a great game. I’m quite fine with that.
It's a shame about the story but considering I barely understood the first, yet still enjoyed it, I dont think I'll really mind that much. Still looking forward to it.
I second that. Although, I want to see/read more about this new "freedom" before giving this game a chance.
So much hype for FF VS but who is to say it aint going to be exactly like FF13 just with a male protagonist? Anywhoo 8/10 aint that bad... lets just hope it is better than FF13, I for one will wait until it is in a bargain bin, FF13 in oz was $23 just a month after release
you could have already said from the trailers of XIII-2 that the story is gonna be shit. just go and watch some of the trailers - the characters are retarded, serah sounds like she is being raped, non-sense time paradoxes etc. Versus on the other hand looks 100x better, mature and it has better characters. gameplay looks amazing and they've said that there are gonna be airships, world map and chocobos.
1. Aren't characters in FF13vs teenagers, u know, about the same age as Serah and Noel? How is that consider mature? Wearing dark clothing and emo like not gonna help it looks more mature either. If anything, that formula is getting quite old really in FF games. Go play Lost Odyssey if you want more mature (u know they have 1000 years old protagonists) theme or traditional FF like games. 2. So u know what those characters are like already and know that it has better characters? Where did u get your news from cause i don't see any news on it as of late beside that "it is coming". 3. If FF13 isn't FF games, than FFvs is far from FF series. From seeing gameplay and description, I don't see how it resemblance traditional turn based FF. With that said, i'm not gonna say FF13vs gonna suck, because me, you and anyone else for that matter don't really know anything about the game. Comparing the 2 games like u have already played them, just reveal that u are a fanboy/hater and nothing more. It is time to wake up. You have been sleeping for quite a while in that back seat NOCTIS.
@baodeus 1) How is age a factor in maturity? I know people who are 17 that are smarter and more mature than some 30 year old's (this is coming from someone who is 25). You can tell just by watching trailers what the story will be like (not the gameplay, you actually have to play the game to understand how bad/good the system is but story you can get a pretty good indication just by watching trailers). Tetsuya Nomura is known for making likable characters who are flawed in some way/shape/form. Plus Noctus isn't a teen. If you have even been paying attention to what Nomura has said you would know that he is well past high school age. He helps run the kingdom for crying out loud. 2) Again if you have read or watched anything about Versus XIII you would already get the feeling about who these characters are and what their motives are. There have been extensive interviews about these characters. Google is your friend. I suggest using it. 3) Final Fantasy Versus XIII is more Final Fantasy than Final Fantasy XIII is. Versus actually has airships, open world, leveling system and has story and characters that are actually likable. Nomura has never directed a game with a terrible story like XIII's. I don't think Versus XIII will be his first. With the exception of game being turn based it has all the things that are usually required of a Final Fantasy. You Final Fantasy XIII fans accuse us other fans of the series of not liking the series and being haters but that's not the truth. We just want the series and its games to be GREAT not just PASSABLE. You guys also accuse us of hating on a game that's not even out yet but turn around and start bashing on Versus XIII. Seems a little hypocritical don't you think. But hey that's just my two cents.
1. Age do factor in maturity. The older u get, the more u experiences. However, there are also many variations. a. How much more experiences does Noctis has over let say Serah, Noel, Lightning, Sazh, snow perhaps? b. What would you consider mature? c. The two games have two different story -> hence character experiences aren't the same -> so how do u determine which one is more mature? Based on a couple of those factors, how can u tell if it is more mature when u haven't play the game or know the detail of the characters development? 2. i never bash FFvs because like i said, i don't know much about it. I don't make any haste judgment, at least not like u, based on some videos and some interviews. 3. FFvs is more in line with kindom heart series than FF games. FF13-2 seems to have at least some of that FF feel again...from what people are saying, not mine (at least it is out now). I haven't played it so I'll make judgement later when i play it (see i don't make judgement based on something i haven't experience myself). 4. All u get is a story outline (interviews and trailers). How they gonna interact with each other throughout the game is another. Just based on some videos without playing, u determined that it has better characters? How? You haven't play anything to know if they are likable or not. Can Nomura ever fall for the JRPG cliche'? Can Nomura vision precipitate well into game? Can trailers be an accurate indication of the final product? We don't even have demo for it. Can your experiences with other games that has great characters development (witcher 2, Portal, Bioshock, Lost Odyssey, UC, ME, Half life, etc), influence your experiences with FF13vs characters as well? All of this requires that u played the game to make a judgment. How does it make any sense that U guys bashing another game (that are out) using a game that u haven't play? Could u called it prediction? If it is, then don't talk like u know it fact (ex: 100x better, mature, better characters, etc...) And for the record, people do have different taste and experiences, what u think may/may not apply to others.
@baodues Did I say anything about XIII-2? Read over my last comment and point out once when I mentioned XIII-2. Go ahead I'll wait. I didn't bash XIII-2. I haven't played it yet. I will however bash XIII because I sat in line day one to pick up the game, paid $60 and played the game all the way through. I think I have the right to own the opinion that XIII was not a good game. It never got better and there was no forgiving the game. The one thing in the game that I thought it did right was the last cutscene at the end and they screwed that ending up by basically rewriting into XIII-2 that the end of XIII didn't end the way it was. And I will respect your opinion on maturity but I strongly disagree with it. Maybe when you have lived the things I have lived then maybe you will understand. Like I said I will go into XIII-2 open minded. I have said that a dozen times on this site. However I have the right to have an opinion on XIII and XIII-2(the opinion to talk about what I think about the game so far from why we have seen). Just because you think you're right doesn't make my points or opinions null and void. It's childish to do so. And until you see that you won't get far.
@PshycoNinja I started responding to LoLZoRz (unless u are the same person), about his statement "Versus on the other hand looks 100x better, mature and it has better characters". That is what i'm trying to prive out of him on how he derived to that conclusion when he hasn't play the game. I don't mean u and u are right, u haven't bash FF13-2. I respect your opinion about FF13 and that u didn't like it. I have no problem at all with that. Of course i feel different about FF13 (since it is just like FF10 in a way, but the story just not as good as FF10), but it isn't bad by any mean. Thanks though for some actual legit (open) debates. That is pretty rare on here. Good day to u.
I gotta give PshycoNinja credit. He's very consistent with his opinions and doesn't hate on things just to hate. He states his opinions in a very clear way and avoids talking trash on other people. I only joined today but have been visiting the site for a while and see Pshyco comment all the time. He respects other peoples opinions and then states his own and I can't help but respect that.
VS XIII will NOT be anything like XIII, it's got Tetsuya Nomura heading it my friend. Meaning it's a very strong possibility it's going to be a great game. With an almost guaranteed awesome story. Also, they have Yoko Shimomura for music, she's like the female Nobuo Uematsu lol. Yeah though, I'll probably wait to pick up XIII-2, I enjoyed XIII's story, but the gameplay just wasn't there unfortunately.
But isn't every other Final Fantasy story laughable at points? I guess 13-2 is just down right absurd.
Well FF10's story was pretty damn awesome in all aspects.
So awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watc...
@knifefight Oh sorry, didnt realize that was part of the story. /s
So the story and music blow big time and the only thing fun about the game is its mechanics? That's just sad FF is all about telling a great story, kinda diminishes the point of even playing the game.
Cant agree more with u man and then u have ppl saying that they enjoy the previous one even though they didn't understand anything for what reason this ppl choose to play a JRPG seriously.. to spam X for 50 hours and watch the cut scenes? Story/Characters for me is No1 factor that decide how good a JRPG is, and soundtrack is one of the most important things also so this sequel have crap story and bad soundtrack so what's the reason to even touch it?
just get versus XIII out here, the final fantasy that has, gameplay, story, and style all in one.
Or so you hope. Don't get me wrong, cuz I hope so, too. I just find it annoying as hell that people are able to place so much faith in VsXIII, while they were excessively critical of XIII-2 while knowing even less about the former. You don't like XIII-2? That's fine. Can't make you enjoy it. But it's hypocritical and downright stupid to say Versus will be the savior for FF and the JRPG genre.
It's not that I know less about it than XIII-2, it's just that even the very first two minute cg trailer for Versus was better than any scene I've seen in all of XIII. The world, the character, and the music are all much better in my opinion. I don't need to play the game to get a sense of the atmosphere and character interplay. And yeah the xiii-2 trailers failed to excite me as it was the same constant melodramatic dialogue one-liners and the eclectic mix of j-pop and j-rap. That turns me off. That's all I need to see to know I will like Versus more.
I blame enix. Square was amazing, square-enix...yes i stll love FF and KH etc...but it seems everything got so polarized after acquiring enix...
Something went wrong after the merger, but it wasn't Enix. Enix was the company that gave us the Valkyrie Profile series, the Star Ocean series, the Dragon Quest series, and Terranigma. These were some of the best JRPGs and there was no RPG more hardcore than Valkyrie Profile.
Star Ocean as a franchise is pretty mediocre, and I think an awful lot of people would agree. Valkyrie profile is better, but it toes the line of mediocrity imo. Yeah it's hardcore, but there's a lot of things wrong with it if you ask me. Terranigma is a great rpg, but there's no such thing as a bad SNES rpg, and Enix never followed up on it. Dragon Quest is really Enix' calling card, not those other games. As far as I'm concerned it's all they've got. Squaresoft on the other hand had a track record of pure excellence. As well as that, DQ VIII is arguably one of the strongest DQ titles, which, interestingly, was made after the merger... Now I'm not saying Enix spoiled things, because DQ is one of the best rpg franchises ever, but I really feel like Enix might partly be responsible for the perceived problems. All their other games pale before DQ, whereas Square have Final Fantasy, but they also have superb games like Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Parasite Eve and Chrono Trigger / Cross; completely separate games that are AS good if not better than many of the FFs. It may also be that all these corporate antics have diluted the content. They've become too big for their own good and creativity has been effected.
The current management is the main problem and the lack or the resources for them to prepare for HD gaming at the start of this generation are all to blame. Like for example saying it would take 10 years to remake FF VII because of the towns. Give it to say Naughty Dog and it might take 2 or 3 years was they have more resources. Midgar had a steam punk theme which would take time to make but Resonance of Fate got it done. Saying that I am still buying it. I got the crystal edition ordered.
