One of the first Western reviews for Final Fantasy XIII-2 is in, courtesy of Game Informer. The magazine had a couple of pressing issues with the title, but still gave it a great deal of praise.
10 years ago, it would be unheard of and suprising for a Final Fantasy game to get an 8. How did my favourite video game series of all time fall down to the levels of a sewer and how to get out of it?
10 years ago Square was still producing rpg's With FF10 and up they started to put out cut scene driven movie games, instead of rpg's.
*Facepalm* Just go back and remake FF6, 7, 8, and 9... At least then Square can't possibly mess up those masterpieces, with all the dialogue, characters, and world already there. They just have to do graphics right... Then again, this is Enix we're talking about, not Squaresoft, so maybe they can... :\
snookies12 if you really think they cant mess up those games i highly doubt it as much as a i want a ff7 remake i have no faith in them this gen they have sucked and anything they touch this gen will suck even remakes
Indeed, i can already see what a remade FF7 would be like. Square would call it a streamlined product, where materia can no longer be equiped, but is attached to a weapon by default. This so that the player doesnt have to go out and look for materia anymore. They would remove the chocobo breeding system, and instead let us breed summons, and store them in little balls. The world map would be removed, square would call it a more cinamatic experience, where players no longer have to think what direction to go. Also it would have a card system, the cards would replace gold, because squares world is so awesome, money would no longer be required. They do would introduce EXP as an awesome and totally new feature, but the EXP will only apply to a silly rating system that nobody wants. Leveling will now no longer occur, not even trough a silly grid, winning this game will now be based on pure luck, yes luck. This luck comes from little potions that can be created trough an insanely annoying mini game, if you run out of luck potions, your screwed and game over. I could go on, but i dont wanna give square too many idea's, they got eyes everywhere.
@Foxgod: The thing I'm most worried about a FFVII remake is that Square might add things from the Compilation, like Genesis or The Deepground SOLDIERs. Or they might cut out parts like Cloud crossdressing or Chocobo Racing or the snowboarding scene because they might be seen as "too silly" for the remade game.
You don't ask for remakes, when the people who work @ SE tell you that "it'd be difficult... too many townz" -____________________-
i say bring back Yasumi Matsuno and make FFXII-2. I'd totally want another game in the "mature" Ivalice world (not the one seen in FFT gba games)
"The reviewer is particularly critical of the game’s story, describing it as “laughable and borderline insulting” and states that the game “screws it up at every turn”. Juba even said that it’s one of his favorite RPGs from a mechanical standpoint. He believes that “If you can detatch yourself from the absurd story, the wealth of content and fun mechanics are extremely satisfying”." Interesting. So they got the gameplay right, but not the story? I'm curious as to 'what' is causing these paradoxes anyway. Well, it doesn't matter, I'm waiting for this be blown widely out of proportion on N4G within the next hour.
I have a feeling that they created a "complicated" and "convoluted" story on purpose and at the end it's just full of plot-holes and nonsense. that's just a feeling.
This is just like FFX-2, pretty decent gameplay but everything else sucks. Very Toriyama indeed. Square shouldn't let that guy direct any other FF game, he should go back to do more simple stuff like director of events or something else. And even then after 3rd Birthday I wouldn't want him close to anything FF. He was the one that came up with the horrible plot device about time travel for 3rd Birthday and ruined the overall story with gimmicks.
I agree about Toriyama. Keep Kitase and Nomura in charge of FF and it'll be ok.
Sewer? an 8? really?
They messed up the battle system.
Lets see game informers FF reviews FF7......9.75 FF8......9.5 FF9......9.75 FF10.....9.75 (2002) FF10-2...9.5 FF13-2....8 !!!! Hence i was correct in saying that 10 years ago, you wouldnt see major FF games getting an 8 (maybe i should have said GameInformer specifically) It hurts to see my favourite series of all time going down the toilet, while i cant do anything about it.....it really really does
Ever since Squaresoft merged with Enix, the quality of the Final Fantasy franchise has been on a decline. FFX being the last Final Fantasy made by Squaresoft. From there on out, each game has progressively received a lower score, or close to that extent. The quality games that have been put out by SE, aside from The World Ends With You and some old remakes, have been developed by other studios, and published by SE, such as Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
Even FFX though was the beginning of where it went wrong. Running down endless corridors because they decided a world map wasn't important anymore. It was still a good game but I preferred the four before it much more.
its actually sad that Game Informer gave FF13 a 9.25 and bought into the hype and then turn around and give FF13-2 a 8 when in fact FF13-2 is BETTER than 13. You can say the story sux but when every other part of the game is improved how can you score it lower than the original? 13 should have been a 8 and 13-2 should be a 8.5
The reviewer does compliment the game's graphics, its level amount of content, its freedom and its battle system so its not all doom and gloom. I would prefer if FF was the way it was but nothing lasts forever. I think people on here like to hate too much. This is about business. If SE feels westernisation will be more profitable than using traditional formula, then westernisation it is. Though bad story aside, what is this game doing wrong either? Edit: The reviewer criticises the story because too many mysteries are explained as being paradoxes. Didn't MGS4's story receive a lot of praise when many of the mysteries in the game were explained as being caused by nano-machine implants?
That's not a plot device tho...a paradox is an easy cop out explanation in most stories that try really hard to have an unexplainable twist. It's rarely done correctly and elegantly. Some good examples are the movie donnie darko, inception etc or games like legacy of kain soul reaver series or FF8. Furthermore, nano machines are not like paradoxes because they can't just spring out of nowhere to save a plot hole in the story. They are introduced right away and also are an actual real world technology so its not like the writers of mgs just wrote it in to explain everything.
About the nano-machines. That plot device was there since MGS2. I feel people ignored that completely. It wasn't pulled out of their ass last minute to explain things, it was there the whole time and an intended part of the story.
Bad story and music in a FF game = skip. I don't care if it got a 1 or 10, story and music are most important in a FF game. I liked XIII enough but if the story's bad and the music's forgettable then I'll just write this off no matter how much better everything else is.
Couldn't agree more.
"How did my favourite video game series of all time fall down to the levels of a sewer and how to get out of it?" An 8 out of 10 is now considered sewer material?
Square Enix is to blame. Bring back the old Square soft. You know that company who knew how to make great JRPGs. Anyway Final Fantasy has always been about a good story. If it doesn't have a good story then whats the point in playing a game based on fantasy.
So now games that get 8s are in the sewers... I hate people who act like an 8 is a terrible score. Gamers are such a fickle bunch. Its too bad the game isn't deserving of 10s, but an 8 is still a solid score. I can't think of another franchise with 15 entries that is still getting good review scores.
An eight IS a lower score these days. Look at how easy it is for a game to get a 9/10 these days. It's like every other big name title (from a publisher with deep pockets) gets a 9+ on average.
"10 years ago, it would be unheard of and suprising for a Final Fantasy game to get an 8" 10 years ago, the entire industry/culture wouldn't have considered an 8 to be a devastating score, nor would an 8 have BEEN such a low score (in comparison to how titles tend to score in the present).
You also have to remember that reviewers ....especially Mr. Juba, are a bit jaded when it comes to this. Sure he said the game mechanics are great and the content is good, just that the story kills it and blah blah blah. I like XIII and I am sure I will like XIII2. So what if he gave it an "8"....that's his opinion....I will NEVER make a purchase decision based on a review. I try the demo and go on what I like....I liked XIII so this will be a definite purchase for me.
Lets hope this game fails so SE doesnt make FF13-3. Unfortunately the best of the 8 endings of FF13-2 says "to be continued..." and Square Enix has bought the web domains FF13-2.com to FF13-9.com So things aint looking good, i wont be surprised if they make 13-3, since they are so out of touch with fans...
And yet doesn't this end with "To Be Continued?"
To be fair, so did Dirge of Cerberus (well..kind of. It had an open ending). And we still haven't seen a sequel to that game.
"To be continued" once you have all the fragments... Yes it's a open ending game but there is a end
Not really an end, Genesis comes back, he says he needs to do something and that's it. Not much of an ending IMO
