CheatCC - My theory on this is that Microsoft is "cleaning up" their Avatars to make Xbox LIVE more friendly to the casual crowd—namely families. And this comes after a pretty massive push for the Kinect.
This has been apparent for some time? When you have more casual Exclusive releases than Core Exclusive releases within a year.....Thats not a good sign for the core gamers and the direction of the console. I Just hope with the X720 they get back on track and focus on the Gamers that got them here
"When you have more casual Exclusive releases than Core Exclusive releases within a year.....Thats not a good sign for the core gamers and the direction of the console." That's solely dependant on where your definition for exclusives ends. Is this counting solely retail? Or are you including arcade in this as well?
Well i was only counting retail exclusives, XBLA is full of great core exclusive games. To me thats the shinging beacon for Xbox Live.
that is usually the time when something bigger is about to be announced. Since the PS1 set the trend it has been a steady wave of events. The PS1 was going casual about 6mos before the PS2 was announced and remained on that course even to the launch of the PS2 and after. This is partly because Sony shifted core focus to launch titles of the PS2 as well as other developers. Why continue to pump resources into making core centric games only to have them overshadowed by the next gen release? So the same thing happened with the PS2 less than a year away from announcement. More casual games released per core title up to the PS3 launch. Kinect gets released and it is more casual oriented and all the while rumors of the next gen on the horizon. Doesn't anyone notice the trend here? If MS is following Sony's model for success then this could basically be the same thing. They have sold to the core audience and while working to build the next system they branch out to the casual family audience. Thus having a family friendly platform in the form of the 360 and a more core centric platform in the form of....? People only need to look at what Sony did with the PS1 after the PS2 launched to see that pattern. Same goes for PS2 right now. It isnt getting many core games (if any games) from Sony. Continued support for titles are coming from 3rd parties and they are pretty diverse in nature. If MS is going to announce a new platform at E3 then so be it. It wouldnt surprise me if they did it next week at CES. Even nintendo did this tactic of more family friendly games at or near the end of the NES/SNES time frame so it isnt just MS that is guilty of this.
No one can blame MS for being smart, casuals eat anything that is massively advertised, they took the chance and released Kinect and now they have some sort of obligation to make games for those casuals, it's just common sense, IF Sony did the same last gen with the Eyetoy, you'd see the same results but 6 ayers ago, I can't see MS ditching the core though, that would be really stupid, casuals are not reliable at all...
@darthv72 So, Microsoft have been on the verge of something for about 2-3 years now?
would it really surprise you if they did? Rumors run rampant and how do you fend off rumors? You put something else out there to throw people off the trail. Sony has been working on the next platform as well. To think they arent dabbling with new tech is absurd. Each company obviously doesnt want word to get out so they will stop at nothing to keep things quiet.
If they are profiting from going casual I doubt we will see any change.
@Raiinstorm81 ***I Just hope with the X720 they get back on track and focus on the Gamers that got them here*** MS will have to switch back to focusing on core gamers for the next Xbox. Core gamers are the early adopters, not casuals. ***When you have more casual Exclusive releases than Core Exclusive releases within a year.....Thats not a good sign for the core gamers and the direction of the console.*** MS delivered several quality AAA exclusives for core this year, most notably Gears of War 3... and if you aren't limited to ONLY playing exclusives then there were a host of quality core multi-platform titles. There were also several great quality titles for Kinect including Kinect Sports 2, Dance Central 2, Gunstringer and my favorite Fruit Ninja Kinect.
Several? You consider 3 games several? It's also hard to count halo anniversary since it's a remake. So that really just leaves forza and gears. Then again, I don't own a 360 at the moment, so have there been any other AAA titles for xbox I haven't heard of this year? Core, AAA titles, that is?
"Core gamers are the early adopters, not casuals." Not anymore. Nintendo has changed that with the Wii. It had casuals galore buying it on release, Wii Sports is still the highest selling game ever. I think MS will go after the casual market from now on cause that is where the real money is and let's face it, MS have always been about the money.
@cpayne93: From the dictionary definition of "several": a: more than one <several pleas> b: more than two but fewer than many <moved several inches> source: http://www.merriam-webster.... "Enuff" said! @BitbyDeath I really don't consider Wii early adopter since it really is just a GameCube. However, I bet you the people standing in line at Wii launch was fans and core gamers. When thinking of "early adopters", I tend to think of pricing as well, not just early adopters in the strict sense. The Wii was already close to mass adoption pricing at launch.
Ugh. Fine if you want to get that specific over it lol. That's not what I meant. Personally I think Microsofts exclusive offerings for the core this year was underwhelming. You seem to think it was a big enough offering.
@BitbyDeath No company in their right mind would rely on Casuals @ 100% wii did bring something innovative, but that's about it and the novelty wore off, I cannot see something like that repeating again, it's up to the core gamers and always have been, casuals are just trend followers...
MS will make a come back...They'll keep the hardcore and casual fans happy. I remeber reading on N4G like 6 months ago that MS are wanting to have more exclusives, at least they're aware!
The Xbox 360 is trying to extend it's appeal so it can sell even when the Xbox 720 comes out next year. Sony will do the same thing with the PS3 at some point, it'll be cheaper with more functions then gaming and have some more casual/family friendly games.
I doubt it...Sony are the only core company left, you know the company which people hate on the most yet are the only ones who seem to give a crap about us still If they go casual, then I just give up with gaming altogether. Microsoft have dwelled in the money pit for too long (not the one in Oak Island), why would they even want to go back. There trying to turn the 360 into, not just a casual console, but also a media hub aswell like what the PS3 established it's self as but it dosen't really work since it was never one from the beginging. Microsoft won't change tatics for the 720, it will just get worse, although they'll lie still and tell us they are still core....still lying since they first said it when Kinect came out in 2010.
sony already did it. Twice. First time was when they were announcing the PS2. The PS1 was getting some core games but there were far more non-core types of games being released and by 3rd parties while the 1st party devs AND sony were busy making PS2 games. Second time they did this is right now with the PS2. It is selling to kids because of the more simple less core titles that were being released up to and since the PS3 release. We are 5 years passed the PS3 release and the PS2 games are more kid friendly than the days of God of war. You can't blame sony or nintendo or MS for wanting to extend their systems lifespan. @raiin... to put it simply. you cant consider their 1st system as having a "history". That would be better suited if this was their 3rd or 4th but its their 2nd. Also i didnt say there were NO core games released on PS2 during the PS3 launch. I said they were less core titles. When sony is getting ready to reveal their next system you will see the same trend. Less core more casual while building up core centric titles for launch time.
WE are 5 years into the life of the PS3 of course the PS2 is geared to kids now. When the PS2 was out and the PS3 was 1-2 yrs off you never saw this much focus on casual gaming. In fact GOW2 was released well after the X360 and and months after the PS3. MS is doing the same but prematurely and IMHO because of Kinect. Not to mention MS has a history of abandoning their prior system, this time instead of abandoning it, it will be converted to a casual gaming machine / media hub But i do agree with the PS1 statement
'I doubt it...Sony are the only core company left, you know the company which people hate on the most yet are the only ones who seem to give a crap about us still If they go casual, then I just give up with gaming altogether.' I guess it's time to give up gaming Turretkiller if you think that Sony isn't already casual as Kinect or Move. See this is where the hypocrisy comes in..Let's look at Wii then Micrsoft w/ Kinect then Sony w/ Move.. - Wii has Wii Sports - Kinect has Kinect Sports - Sony has Sports Champion - Kinect had a hit with Kinectimals then Kinectimals with Bears. - Move went from EyePet to Eyepet and Friends - Wii had Just Dance - Kinect had Dance Central and Dance Central 2 - Move this year had Everybody Dance - Wii had Wii Fit - Kinect had Fitness Evolved and Fitness Evolved 2011 - Move will have Move Exercise See whaty I've been saying all along is the hypocrisy of this gen is bashing one console or company for doing exactly what the other two have been doing all along 'try to appeal to the most people you can' Just keep it 100% real Evil
Remember the days when SONY and Xbox fanboys made for of the Wii for being too casual? How the tables have turned.
How is the PS3 too casual?
I don't understand why your getting dislikes. Sony hasn't become a casual comapny. The only casual thing they've released is move and that's just an add on. For the most part Sony has stuck to their guns this generation.
"How the tables have turned." That's not the correct way to term it. Going by your first sentence, that would mean Wii fanboys are now making fun of Sony and MS for being too casual. You sort of failed at delivering your own joke (unless you read this in time for an edit :P)
Nintendo have been pretty casual for quite some time, doesn't mean they have bad games though. Nintendo exclusives are amongst the best out there.
Hhmmm weird, I have a kinect less xbox and I dont feel im missing out on anything. Im more of a "core" than a "hardcore" gamer. Its just more of an kinect thing being suited towards the casual imo but all together its a nice experience.
"My theory on this is that Microsoft is "cleaning up" their Avatars to make Xbox LIVE more friendly to the casual crowd—namely families." They just added the option of giving your avatars tattoos. How does that figure in with your theory?
Yeah i disagree with the entire avatar statement, its soooo many varied things for the avatars that its pretty much your choice. I wish they would add Guns and Swords to the avatars that wouldve been a better example Can a brotha get a Gnasher for his avatar?
Children get stick-on tattoos all the time. And, unlike guns, that's still something that's okay to give kids in today's world. Guns, on the other hand, are not seen as being very family friendly or appropriate for children; it makes more sense for them to remove the guns instead of the tattoos.
This sounds legit, it would all add up if they want it to be the place for casual gaming and entertainment, with the whole DVR/Xbox patent. I just want a hardcore system maybe ps4's focus will be more gamer friendly
the whole basis for the article comes from an incorrect assumption on the writers behalf. they state: "A brand new policy went into effect that disallows Avatars from holding any "gun-like" objects." If you hadve read the post by Epic on their forums announcing that the Lancer and Hammerburst avatar items would be removed from the marketplace, you would know that it's NOT a new policy. it has in fact been part of the avatar marketplace policy since day 1. Epic, who even said they were very surprised that the gun props made it through approval, somehow had a few guns slip through the cracks and make it on to the marketplace. someone screwed up and approved them. there has NOT been a change in policy.
The guns were on the marketplace for over 2 months. Idk seems like a long time for a such a serious policy violation. Plus during xmas, xbox live offered you 50% the gold lancer gun. Im pretty sure on that alone, that were aware.
360 avatars do seem more casual to me. some ps avatars are down rght hedonistic! D*** near nude, guns demons, bikini, slutty etc... plus the level of customization allowes them to resemble the actual people! Seems the ps3 is way more "hardcore". -off topic- I understand the more negative attitude towards Killzone 3, I like 2 better myself, but, IMHO, 3 is still a superb fps, better than most anywhere else! I play daily ! Such fun! AKMIR SNOWDRIFT FTW!
