Nintendo's Wii gamble - and big win

ReportonBusiness.com writes:

"The Wii is also the centrepiece of one of the biggest corporate comebacks in history. Just five years ago, analysts were writing off Nintendo Co. Ltd. The company, which made video games a staple of living rooms everywhere, faced increasing console competition from tech heavyweights Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. Suddenly, Nintendo had to reinvent video gaming to save itself.

So Nintendo cast its gaze inward in an effort to bring back the glory days of the late 1980s and early 1990s..."

It may sell to those crazy grandmas who think they're cool or even those 5 year olds who can't afford anything else, but no hardcore gamer should own one. PS3 or 360 is the only way to go.

is doing so well. They are after all one of the great pioneers of the video games industry. If they were to leave the console industry it would be a huge blow IMO.

Mario is probably one of the most recognized faces in the industry. Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Donkey Kong...all timeless classics. Not to mention that Super Mario Galaxy has joined Zelda: The Ocarina of Time on Metacritics highest rated games of all time.

Graphics can only become photorealistic, after that point the innovation has to come elsewhere. Maybe Nintendo is on to something? The Wii is just an experiment, it's successor will most likely have a powerful GPU.

Good for them. Hope they stay in the industry.

They released a $250 Gamecube making like $100 profit a unit. Guaranteed to sell at least 10 million to their zealot fanbase and could easily drop the price to $99 if it didn't catch on. Really they took absolutely no gamble here which is smart from a business standpoint but just screws us consumers with a vastly underpowered and overpriced game machine. If they were actually gambling it would be a $250 system with modern hardware like the Gamecube was in it's day.

And get screwed again by people not wanting their consoles...it's better that nintendo stays in business for the entire industry.
