VGW: A new round of phishing attacks and unauthorized Paypal charges is affecting Xbox 360 users this morning, and one of our readers has offered to share his story with the hope that others can prevent the situation from happening to them.
And they say XBL is suppose to have better security.
Paypal charges now? I thought the first unauthorized attacks on accounts were linked to EA's past hack? Crazy.
Right, something about FIFA? Apparently now accounts are just being straight up restored to a hacker's console -- which of course gives them access to whatever payment methods are default on the account
-mika- apparently doesn't know what phishing is. There really isn't any security against people's ignorance.
"Right, something about FIFA?" Are people seriously on this site still oblivious to this one? You better not be joking cause there's been some serious crap about this as of late. The fifa one is when the person recovers the account through EA's database by illicit means, by using specific html coding, and then using that same information to log into a person's account and then change the information, then uses it to purchase the packs. All they need to do is to pull a random gamertag and they do the rest. It is sincerely annoying how people backpeddle to the first thing of "Oh it's nothing, just the person's fault". That's how incidents like this potentially start. There's already been an investigation into the FIFA one.
-WrAiTh Sp3cTr3- apparently doesn't know one of the avenues of the phishing scam is XBOX SUPPORT. People's ignorance? Yup. Shame the corp you're paying is contributing to the abuse.
^^^^ I guess all this phishing will have LIVE offline for a month, huh?
^^^^^^^^ PSN outage did suck, but I wasn't out a dime (as damn near everyone else). And got a more secure network, free games and 6 months tacked onto my PS+ membership. Someone bring that shit down again!
You know what. It's pointless to even remotely point the FIFA issue out here, considering people have way to much of a bias to even care, UNTIL it happens. The facepalming situation, is that someone actually PM'd after the previous comment, trying to say that it's fake.
FIFA hack? Seriously who plays a soccer video game anyway. Im sorry but thats just lame genre right there.
Compared to what exactly?
Oh, something tells me that was a slightly troll-worthy remark about the PSN...
Troll is ignorant ^^^
hmm lets see.. scattered reports about hacked gamertags (which we dont know how they got hacked. maybe through phishing scams) vs a whole international online system with more than 70 million account gets hacked and get offline more than a month.
Funny thing is this has been happening for quite sometime on XBL. The only difference is Sony let their consumers know while Microsoft keeps things hush hush.
interesting that there have been quite a few of these reports but they quickly get burried. let's hope Live gets the same treatment as PSN... it just makes things fair
I use pre paid cards for my points and membership. They can't take something I don't give them.
This does not make sense, every transaction I make with paypal requires a username and password, I never used it on Xbox-live, so are you telling me that on Xbox-live it takes payments automatically?
that's how it works...
I read the entire article, and not one single time was how a so called hack occured. Yet the title flames it up. The phishing scam was only explained as expected, which is NOT a hack.
I hear A LOT of stories about people getting their accounts stolen or their points getting spent on Xbox Live. Funny thing is we never hear these stories about PSN, even before the hack when security was supposedly "bad".
i agree, then people build up the PSN hack to epic proportions (70 millions accounts were hacked!!!) Every person on PSN was NOT hacked.....PSN was shut down by Sony to ensure everyones info was not tampered with. But that has been the media perception this gen MS is infallable and Sony can do nothing right.... sad really coming from people who are supposed to be objective
Sonys network was hacked, the XBL fraud is due to phishing.
MTAF:beware of phishing.if you give out your password to an unknown party then this this what happens to your account.
It can't just be down to phishing, there must be some other reason, PSN would be just as susceptible to phishing attacks.
@unapersson I think a spoiled alert just went off from you stating next weeks headline article: PSN phishing attack from dummies who give username and password in exchange for a "lucky prize".
