Video games join film and music to embrace the digital revolution

TheGuardian: It's been predicted for music and film and now the same prophesies are swirling around for video games: high street retail is dead, long live digital distribution.

The rise of smartphone and social games has been the year's big story – and these can all be downloaded from the web or played online. Then again, there's no arguing with retail blockbusters such as Fifa 12, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which hit $1bn (£638m) sales within 16 days. So what is going on in video games? And can the traditional players adapt to survive?

Mmmmm no.! Until my internet speed goes above the 100mbps I'll never accept digital downloading, do these morons know how long it would take to download a game like Mgs4, were just not ready for digital downloading in gaming right now we need disks still, maybe in 10 or 15 years yh when most off the major countries have fast internet connection, hell Sony Ms and nintendo heave to look at major up and coming markets like India Brazil China etc where there's billions of people there to Cator to and they are defo not ready for digital copy, that would be a stupid decision if you think business wise.

So true, it takes far to long to download a 9gb game at 25mb. So a PS3 game would take all day long at that internet speed.

It's not that bad. Most digital games allow you to pre-load the game a few days ahead of time(on Steam/Origin at least). If they don't then the download will just start when you are sleeping that night and in the morning you have a game waiting for you.

I own all but one game on my PC digitally(Skyrim since I got it as a gift) with no issues. No reason why all games can't be offered digitally for $15-$20 cheaper than a physical copy. Consoles are mainly the non-digital crowd, the PC has already successfully gone digital for the past few years.

I use Steam and my pre-orders pre download when i'm not gaming thus they are ready to play at exactly midnight on the release day.

all other purchases download over night so when i wake up or return home they are ready to go. anything over 3mb download speed is pretty good

consoles will continue to use media but they will also be pushing harder for gamers to use digital download. PSN and XBLA were a way for Sony and MS to test the digital market.

The Day that games are sold ONLY in digital download, it's the day I'll stop collecting "current" games to focus on the retro ones!

One of the most ridiculous articles I have ever read in my life. But coming from that site. I am not suprised.

Its best to ignore it.

They have a point they want to make regardless of fact and truth and they will cover up or downplay anything that doesnt "play in"

The SUCCESS of the 3ds and vita and outpacing there precedessor numbers prove this article false right away. As do other FACTS, like the majority of total new game sales are done physically, over 75 percent.

They should bring up a game like portal 2. It sold more physically. By about 2 million

That's what a lot of people don't see; games like FF13, MGS4, etc thats either multi disc or 16+ GB is not a "digital" option, however articles like this don't see that. Someone can argue MMO's however that's patch-related not the entire game itself.

C_Menz2429d ago

Not really. A 16gb game at 3mbs(which is what I download most games at) would only take 1 1/2 hours to complete.

Prototype2429d ago

A lot of people don't have either the space and/or the speed. I'm lucky enough to have a 50 Mbps cable connection and tons of flash/USB drives with space; I'm talking from a general perspective.

OMEGAZONE2429d ago

Couldn't be any further from the truth. Digital is not the future for Video Games for so many reasons.

Alos882429d ago

Newspaper article, ignore.

Digital Distro needs to stay an "option."

So people with dial up/slower speeds gets left out? Articles like this only see one side and not both.
