The rise of smartphone and social games has been the year's big story – and these can all be downloaded from the web or played online. Then again, there's no arguing with retail blockbusters such as Fifa 12, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which hit $1bn (£638m) sales within 16 days.
