What the GameSpot Debacle Means for Gaming Trends

Giga Omni Media - Wagner James Au, Thursday, December 6, 2007:

Last week, after 10-plus years with CNET's GameSpot, the Internet's top game coverage site, editorial director Jeff Gerstmann was summarily fired under mysterious circumstances. The subsequent outrage is still roiling the Net, so in the end, it doesn't really matter if (as the theory goes) he was defenestrated for rudely panning Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, a high-profile game from top GameSpot advertiser Eidos Interactive (CNET steadfastly denies this was the case). In light of the ongoing fury of gamers who have already assumed the worst, he might as well have been. More relevant is how the controversy will help restructure the industry, vastly accelerating three trends already at hand...

• Established Game Sites Must Consolidate or Die

• The Death of Hardcore Games (Mostly)

• Platform Chaos: 360 and PS3 Plummet; Wii, PS2, Casual Gaming Conquer

The article includes a full explanation for each of the three trends.

The story is too old to be commented.

Why not look into how Gamespot and other major Game sites over score big Microsoft piles of sh1te. (Halo series, Bioshock, Mass Effect etc)

That's the flip side of the corruption coin here. Yes, he was probably axed for giving out a truthful review of a sh1t game.
But what about all the high scores Gamespot (and others) shelled out for many average titles that happened to be MS game studios? I wonder how big those checks were?

Not to mention Gamespot pans or down plays any great PS3 release at any chance they get. (Warhawk, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet etc)
I wonder how much money crossed palms there too?

I say F()ck him. The whole gaming media industry is a joke these days.
Not like the old ZZap64! days when if a game was sh1t, they told you so, and if it was truly great, you believed them. (youngsters will be thinking right now WTF? hehe)
