Ex-Last Guardian producer wants to create Facebook's first masterpiece
Eurogamer: "Yoshifusa Hayama, the man who recently left behind development of The Last Guardian to join London social games developer Bossa Studios has explained why he made the move - and how he wants to create Facebook's first masterpiece game."
(PC, PS3, The Last Guardian)
It's true, Facebook games are devoid of depth for a reason: the players don't want any. Facebook games are designed to be played casually, and as such, require the depth of the shallow end of a kiddie pool so that they can be played in 5 minute bursts.
And I know, it's possible to make a Facebook game with a whole lot of depth, but think about it: who's going to play it? The more serious/enthusiast gamers might, but they know they can get deeper experiences on dedicated devices/platforms outside of Facebook, so they won't be terribly interested.
The only reason Facebook games make any money is because casuals will play them and don't mind being aggressively advertised at or ignorantly annoying their friends with game requests (thinly veiled ads).
If you think about it, a facebook masterpiece would have to be a game that epitomizes facebook gaming like no other. And we already have that: Farmville. Are you going to make Farmville, sir?
Facebook wont even be the thing the time this guy finishes the game....kinda like myspace cause they take so blinkin long.. good things come to those who wait aey
Yeah right all these changes to Facebook recently have disgruntled many and with google+ lurking with its minimalism I can definitely see some migration there over the next year. Ultimately I think the casual market is just not something devs can rely on.
I find very inelegant from those developers to leave The Last Guardian before it is released.
I think they should have done their best to release the game and after that leave Sony. They should have asked the help of other developers like Kojima did with Platinum Games.
Sony Japan should also try to learn from western developers. Western developers leraned a lot from Japan during twenty years, now they can do great games that were once only made by japanese developers, just look at God of War (Santa Monica Studio) or the new Devil May Cry (Ninja Theory), those two games are Beat Them All, a genre that is typically japanese and despite that, western developers raised the bar to become very competitive on the market.
It's time for japanese to talk more with other developers. the ICO studio had the possibility to talk with other Sony's studio like Naughty Dog, Santa Monica or Sucker Punch just to have their feelings toward PS3's technology. ICO team would have also the possibility to recruit to finish their project but they prefered leave, that's very inelegant and such a fail for japanese developers.
The next studio where Sony Japan must take some risks and develop it more is Polyphony Digital. Actually Kazunori moved to a bigger instalment, with a bigger team, Sony must boost such decisions.
Anyway looking forward to Hayama work, but i think that this story is really regretfull and i hope he will understand with time that he made a mistake. We don't leave like that what we build.
Fine, now a Facebook game. He's a little late to the party with that idea and he's not going to finish it anyway, but it's always good to talk big...I guess.
Either way I'm not even interested in The Last Guardian anymore. It's been way too long to still care.
all about the money - what is masterpiece they say?
I wish him and Ueda the best, they are great developers.
