Analysis: Next-Generation DVD Players - What Consumers Want

E-Commerce Times - Parks Associates analyst Chris Roden, 12/03/07:

Parks Associates studied various aspects of high-definition player adoption, perception, and purchase factors in 13 countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States), which provides some insight into the consumer role in the next-gen DVD battle. Here are some highlights from the study:

• Few consumers are familiar with Blu-ray or HD DVD. China has the highest percentage with 19 percent of households familiar with Blu-ray or HD DVD, followed by Germany with 16 percent.

• Most consumers - even those who own Blu-ray or HD DVD players - are confused and not familiar with either format.

• Overall, consumers rank the "quality of the picture" as the most important factor in selecting a HD format. The only exception is Japan, which rank the "price of the player" as most important. (See the attached chart below.)
