Jeff Gerstmann Won The Lottery This Weekend

No matter how the Gamespot debacle is resolved, one thing is undeniable. Getting fired was the best thing that ever happened to Jeff Gerstmann's career.

From the article: "So, what does the future hold for Mr. Gerstmann? This newest addition into internet celebrityhood, who started out as a musician, and later on a video game reviewer, has nothing but options at this point. Because of all the GS hub bub, he has more clout as an honest reviewer than anyone else in the business right now. The totally mad reaction and cult like support for the man means that any website, or company that picks him up can more than likely cash in on his street cred."

It's 110-degree when it was finally approved. Apparently people are still reading it and not sick of the story.

No one gives a crap about this fat F*ck. I'm sick of these articles. Haven't you seen there'e getting less and less comments here on N4g?

JSA-Gamer3792d ago

Then don't read them. Obviously you didn't read this one. But that's cool, go back to finding other applications for your obviously advanced vocabulary.

My problem is with the titles, I really though he won the lottery this weekend until I read the article.

isn't he also the guy that gave zelda twilight on the wii a 8.8 and uncharted a 8?? if so screw this guy.

That's the thing. This guy's the type that usually pans reviews to generate hits. He's the guy that everyone likes to dislike. Like Dvorak, his tagline is "all publicity is good publicity."

Lets imagine a scenario. Gerstmann walks into his boss and says, "Look, we've had a great run here, but I'm ready to look for something else. Now, I can either quit, which would just mean you and me both looking for a new writer/job, or we can stir things up and make this a win/win for all of us.

Again, there's no such thing as bad publicity. Maybe GAMESpot miscalculated a little and are loosing more than they thought. But... gamers' memories are short, which means normality may return in short order. In the meantime, Gamespot's name is getting big press, and big press translates into big hits (even if just to check Gerstmann's old reviews or the infamous review).

Not saying this is true. Just saying that media outlets have done bigger things to manipulate the market. And this sort of subtext had become constant when talking about reviews for months. Everyone was talking about how ads were buying reviewers. So what do you do as a company? You can't prove a negative (so the rumors will never stop), you might as well confirm it and turn it into a positive/gain publicity.

In the end, this only confirms gamers' thoughts. So now they distrust everyone (maybe GS in particular for a while, but that'll fade and as a bonus, every GS review on n4g will get massive posts "why are we posting this garbage!!!").

As an added bonus, Gerstmann gets some kind of assumed credibility. Which means, he becomes the paid shill of the company he works for, boosting their cred by writing bad reviews on occasion, offsetting too many positives and creating the illusion of accountability/independence.
