Check out the latest review scores from Famitsu, which includes the first reviews for Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Monster Hunter Tri G - one perfect score and another near-perfect score.
I'm definitely excited about this game.
Then I'm gonna have to take this with a huge grain of salt cause I thought FF13 sucked ass and was as boring as going to my GF's friend couple dinner party-get-together crap.. Graphics were very nice though.
I cant see much to say its improved over 13-1 going off previews. I am not buying into this score at all. Famitsu has been going crazy with the 40 scores recently.
@kingdavid - Yeah... They never gave out 40s in the past. I think only one game got a 40 till this gen and now everything's getting them...
@kingdavid yeah i think they gave out 3 40s alone this gen. now 4 and i really thought FF13 sucked compared to the old FF. Dumb story, boring battle system, linear as hell and that gets it a fucking 39/40..this must also add outdated visuals for the full 40.
It's multiplatform nuff said. Color me not interested until it's in the bargain bin.
And the trolls come out. Nice to see who all's passing judgement when they themselves haven't played the game nor are keeping up with previews. If they did, this shouldn't be a surprise. Also, this isn't the first review. Dengeki covered it before Famitsu. They gave it an S. I'm starting to wonder how people can call Final Fantasy XIII a bad game yet praise Mass Effect 2 (which has one of the worst stories and set of characters) and Skyrim. lol Opinions. Everyone has them and they all stink. The west's obsession with shallow rpg's, which are more akin to shooters is just plain ridiculous. JRPGs continue to define gaming, whether mainstream America acknowledges it or not. Persona 3 and 4 as well as Digital Devil Saga 2 have yet to be dethroned as far as I'm concerned, and I doubt that's changing soon. Especially with the way Bioware's money-hatting out. Square hasn't fallen. They continue to make great games and have bolstered the PSP's lineup into a genuine PS2 successor. It's a JRPG haven, and with Final Fantasy Type-0 around the corner I'm not complaining and neither should you.
@NeoBasch Well you can't blame people for not trusting Famitsu who game FF13 39 out of 40 points. I was really exited for FF13, it was one of the reasons I bought my PS3 three years back, but now the game sits in a pile, half finished and collecting dust. As an RPG it may not be as bad as people make it out to be, but the real problem is that it doesn't earn the name Final Fantasy. I would wholeheartedly agree with you about JRPG's last gen, but not this. This gen I have yet to play a propper JRPG on my PS3, besides demon/dark souls, there really is nothing that has peaked my interest. And imho, SMT Nocturne is yet to be dethroned, since neither of DDS have come close to it, haven't played Persona series unfortunately.
I don't trust Famitsu ratings on Final Fantasy I'll wait to see what reviewers outside Japan say
F**k! Now $quareEnix gets away with it. And they start making FFXIII-3. Will I ever see another JRPG that mesmerized me like FFX did?
@NeoBasch, Spot on remarks.
@Neobasch are you kidding me. Mass effect has probabley one of the best and complex stories this generation. 2 Improved on nearly every aspect of ME1 while making it a more playable game. Skyrim is just skyrim. dont even start with it. Its in another league from any other rpg out there. You can stick with your dying breed of Jrgs while I sick with my apparently shallow western Rpgs. for every generic american shooter theres a generic japanese rpg. Oh and by the way, Famitsu gives like every fucking japan made game insanely high scores while they give western games lower. biased much? The only western game to get a perfect 40 is skyrim. edit: oh im just waiting for all the fanboys to click dislike on my comment so they feel better about themselves.
@Rai are you serious bro??? boring battle system??? I bet a million $$$ that you only played an hour of that game. the battle system in FFXIII is by FAR the best in the entire series. I always said that FFXIII's battle system is so great, it could easily be translated into a multiplayer FF game. it's funny, because people like you are the ones who will turn around and claim Arkham City has fantastic combat. now that is game with amazingly boring combat. I'm really starting to think people hate on FFXIII because it's the cool thing to do. like it was cool to hate on the PS3 years ago. like it's cool to hate on Justin Bieber. like it's cool to hate on people who drink Starbucks. like it's cool to hate on people who hate on people who buy Apple products. haters gonna hate. FFXIII is by far better than many, even most, of the games out this generation. yes not as great as the other FF's but still miles better than the crap we've seen this generation.
@estranged they've giving out a total of 17-20 throughout their publications history including from past generations. i myself have no problems with their scoring on this game as i enjoyed the first game.
lol I guess @Skip_Bayless hasn't played Skyrim, Battlefield, Deus Ex, Portal 2, Dead Space 2, Rayman Origins, Batman AC etc. this year because they are all multiplatform and therefore he isn't interested. Such a stupid thing to say.
Famitsu is known for always giving Final Fantasy games high or perfect scores. Nothing new here. I suspect FF13-2 will be better than its predecessor but will it match up to past FF games? I doubt it.
FF13 was ok, but ok is not enough for a FF game, half my time was spent in chapter 11, I hope FF13-2 is more like that chapter, they said they fixed things so I will give them a chance. @Nanometric P3&4 are great classics, get P3 on the PSP, and P4 will be out for the Vita, also Devil Survivor on the DS.
I humbly disagree. While Nocturne has an engrossing atmosphere and great writing, I found DDS2 to be far better thanks to the excellent cast of characters full of psychological undertones. The narrative was better as well thanks to the greater emphasis on philosophical and sociological subtext, metaphors, symbolism, and parallels. Also, the Hindu references were intellectually stimulating as it called for greater religious tolerance with the realistic way they portrayed it.
@strauser360 "Mass effect has probabley one of the best and complex stories this generation. 2 Improved on nearly every aspect of ME1 while making it a more playable game" I honestly can't see how you can feel that it's the case. I only recently picked up and played Mass Effect 2, whilst having not played Mass Effect 1 and I did thoroughly enjoy it. My problem with what your saying comes from a playthrough of Mass Effect 1 around a friends afterwards. ME2 completely [email protected] on it's justifications of not having ammo, despite giving decent enough reprocussions and explanation as to no ammo counter. The skill leveling up is completely paired back also, with many things simply replaced as a standard skill, something I feel is always going to be a step back for an RPG. Grenades were completly removed and I honestly cannot understand why. The hud is pared back giving a greater sense of depth at the cost of a functional way of looking after your team, not that it's a big issue considering they completely changed the medi-gel thanks to the regenerating health. Everything about Mass Effect 2 was about making it more of a comercial shooter, when compared with the first atleast. Oh and the removal of crouch for a cover button, imo, sucks.
I thought FF13 was good, it wasn't as good as what I expected given the vision I got from its trailers. Moreover there was no Role-playing in it. Still it was good enough for me to buy the sequel. I wonder what is going to be the difference between the PS3 version and the 360 version. Famistu no doubt reviewed the PS3 version. I can't see how FF13 will be significantly more open without significant downgrades. If 13-2 is indeed more open than the original 13, then I can only see 3 possible explanations... 1) The game is smaller over-all. 2) The graphics are nerfed even more to save space. 3) Chapter 11(or its equivalent in terms of openess) is placed at the front instead of the back. Mass Effect 2 did it that way. Does anyone know of a review to the 360 version? Got a link?
Eighteen games have received perfect scores from Famitsu. They are listed in chronological order: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998, Nintendo, for Nintendo 64) Soulcalibur (1999, Namco, for Dreamcast) Vagrant Story (2000, Square Co., for PlayStation) The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2003, Nintendo, for Nintendo GameCube) Nintendogs (2005, Nintendo, for Nintendo DS) Final Fantasy XII (2006, Square Enix, for PlayStation 2) Super Smash Bros. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (2011, Square Enix, for Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3) just to leave it here...
@King_Many_Layers it took me a while to figure out what you wrote honestly. I can see if you think mass effect 2 was disappointing because they stripped away a lot of the stats and upgrades but I mean they improved on, graphics, gunplay, real time skill system usage, combat, cover, story, character development. They also take some bold ideas like having your character die in the the beginning of the game and the suicide mission which just adds more layers of complex flow charts to the story in the future. No other game allows you to carry over these decisions from the first games to the third. Mass effect isnt Biowares game, Its the players game.
I'm definitely NOT excited. After playing FFXIII for about 25 hours I quit on chapter 10 or so. The effeminate male characters, the whiny little boy, completely whacked out story and repetitive gameplay did it for me. It's too bad as FFXIII is one of the best looking games on the PS3
Final Fantasy XIII got okay scores, but from what I just read, it looked like the sequel is scoring very high...I'm gonna eye this one and follow it closely. :)
http://www.gamerevolution.c... Mehmehmehmehmeh XD (I'll wait till it's in the bargain bin.)
Mehmehmehmehmeh lol ill just wait till its 29.99
im really excited about this game but at the same time disappointed. i mean how come the graphics excluding CGI cutscenes doesnt look as good as FFXIII. is it just only me? :/
They gave a 39/40 to the first one and we all know how that turned out. And a 28/40 to Demon's Souls. ;)
I use this same excuse Famitsu has no credibility....
They also give Haze a 34/40
I guess the 40 they gave skyrim is meaningless too huh? they have been countless western games 39/40. instead of people here bashing them and making baseless claims how about you people check out the scores they've giving on the wiki page for them. and another thing this complaining about this/that game being to linear is stupid as hell. not every game needs to be open world which tends to get boring after a while. some of the best/greatest games of all time are linear and frankly im glad most are made this way since i don't have all the time in the world to play open world games like some it seems. to me the media is to blame for this stupid way of thinking and people for believing this cap also.
the 40 they gave skyrim is also meaningless. their reviews are simply unreliable and all over the place. Games don't need to be open world most aren't but FF13 has the most straight forward paths out of any game ever released bar platformers, FPS games have less linear paths than that game and when it actually does open up there's nothing there it's just a big empty lifeless field. It really didn't help that the combat played it self for you I beat the game with only 3 shifts that I never had to edit once.
Check and Mate
"They gave a 39/40 to the first one and we all know how that turned out." Uhh, brilliantly? God forbid they actually PLAY the game
FFXIII? Brilliant? You baffle me sir. Baffle!
FFXIII was very crap. Very very crap. Sorry @ below, do I really have to repeat what was wrong with FFXiii? You had two ****ing command for 3 hours into to the game, Auto battle and attack, auto battle resulting in attack. THe battle system was terribly boring until it unlocked 1 chapter before Pulse. There was no breaks from battling. All you did was battle the same battle with 'libra, auto battle and paradigm shift' for 20 hours. The story and characters sucked badly are were Cheesy and annoying(Snow and NORA, "we're so cool, heroes to the end" **** YOU SNOW!), the music was decent but still below just about every FF. The main enemy was an absolute disgrace. Lets talk minigames. 2, 30 seconds, ride a robot and bash enemies. Second one, chase a mini chocobo around a garden so a cutscene could play of it hiding again. Seriously! WTF was that? Seriously, appalling game design. I just don't understand how anyone can see some good in this game. Fair enough decent ending. That's all I could give it/ What I do think is that it had alot of potential. But it just turned so mainstream to appeal to Western audiance. Why? Their inspiration was COD for gods sake, the idea of being on a linear path contantly under pressure from enemies. It does NOT suit an RPG. God, I really hated this game
RedDeadDestroyer Pretty much says it all that I felt.
@RedDead Bubbles for you, mate!
You can tell how much influence western reviews have on Famitsu. Dark Souls was pretty much in the same territory as Demon's Souls and yet it got raving review scores with Famitsu knowing FULL WELL what the reception was for Demon's Souls. I bet they were having huge ??? on their foreheads. Suffice to say, even with the so-called improvements, I'm pretty sure XIII-2 won't fare no better than it's predecessor through western reviews knowing that the bar has substantially increased overtime.
I agree Demons' Souls was a beast of a game. FF13 was garbage now they are giving FF13 2 a perfect. No thank you to this game. @Neobasch Mass Effect 2 was a great game. FF13 on the other hand was not. I really didn't enjoy the game at all. Especially how they made the black character the comic relief, as well as have a chocobo living in his hair. FF will sell even if the game is bad. Its just like the COD series. Its becoming water down. The last game that square made that was good was Journey of the Curse King, and they only published it. Level 5 made it The first jprg i will be purchasing the gen will be Ni no Kuni by level 5.
FF13 was awful compared to the previous ones. I could not get myself past chapter 1 and I just stopped playing the game. I'm just so disappointed after that long wait. And since Famitsu gave Demon Souls a lower score than FF13 then I have no reason to believe their reviews. FF13 feels like a first gen rpg with next gen graphics.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 got a perfect score. Wow. I wonder how it's going to be reviewed like in the West. Though, It's going be pretty funny when it's getting 9's in the US, and there are still people trying to troll this game as a "piece of shit"
Just because it gets critical success doesn't mean people like it. We will be able to judge what people thought of 13 by the sells of 13-2. If it does worse around the world you will know that 13 put people off.
"Just because it gets critical success doesn't mean people like it. " So you're basically saying "Just because it's good doesn't mean it'll be good"? okayyy. lol.
"So you're basically saying "Just because it's good doesn't mean it'll be good"? okayyy. lol." I think he meant that just because the game scores good that NOT EVERYONE is going to automatically like it.
What, like FF13?! It deserved it.
Wow, can't believe it got a perfect score!
Welcome to Famitsu's "FF 40/40 club" I bet FFXII and FFXIII-2 have a lot of fun.
Not surprising, Famitsu it's kinda bias when it comes to FF.
Heh i never doubted you Square, not for a second. Oh yea i think this calls for... Haters gonna hate!!!1
Cant wait for this Get ready here comes the haters
I’m so happy. Side note: did anyone else notice the gradual shift to N4G community members accepting XIII-2 after a while? There was almost universal hate for it, and now the detractors are in the vast minority. <3
That's because we stopped paying attention to their ignorance after a while. Hard to troll when there's nothing to troll about.
It’s even harder to troll with only 2 bubbles.
Sorry, but trolling isn't my style. If I've go nothing relevant to say, I don't say anything. The point of my comment- which seems to have been missed entirely- was that there honestly was little to nothing wrong with XIII. Therefore, after a while, the detractors had nothing to say. I've said it before, and I'll repeat it here, for what good it will do: While XIII may have been a poor FF- in the traditional sense, the only method by which it was judged by all those who said it sucked- it was still a good game, and I for one am looking forward to XIII-2 and have had it on reserve for a few months now. If you believe I'm trolling, feel free to check my comment history.
Second comment was well said sir. I enjoyed FF13, while not as good as previous, (and like you said, that is where the universal hate comes from) it was a great game in itself. cant wait for Xiii-2!
I know SE fixed the issues of XIII and I know that this will be great just because SE listens to fans and that's always good. I just wish they won't get lost again.
Square listens to fans?... Lol that's the funniest thing I have heard all day.
If Square really listened to it's fans, they would put more effort to finish Versus XIII, they would've remade Final Fantasy VII and they would have already been in production for Kingdom Hearts III. Just saying. It's just my opinion, you guys are totally allowed to buy into the Square hype and get disappointed when playing another Final Fantasy XIII.
they don't listen to the fans...FF14 is a prime example of that. If they did, FF14 wouldn't of failed so badly, FF13-2 would not exist and even though I don't want it, The FF7 remake would be happening right now.
sorry, if they listened to fans FFXIV wouldn't have failed so badly? Where do you get that info from? They completely rebuilt the game BECAUSE of fan criticisms. And haven;t you listened or read any of the interviews lately as to WHY they aren't making a remake of VII? It is because of the amount of content in it, to built ALL of those towns and cities in HD would take an enormous amount of time. Yes it would be a massive money maker but also, if your game was deemed "the best rpg" would you want to touch it as a company? There would be SO much expectation behind it that the fans would go nuts if one tiny thing was off with it, and if it was the exact same people would bash it for not improving on anything. It seems it would be a lose/lose, aside from their bank accounts growing. It just doesn't make sense to touch it. If anything, make a sequel in the same vein. Bring cloud and ensemble back, that way we get to see them in glorious HD, keep the original battle system with tweaks and it will quiet the fanboys while giving a great new game. sorry for the rant. :)
@sirdrake I've read why they didn't want to remake it, I don't want them to remake it. but if they are going to listen to fans they would of remade it. on FFXIV, they are listening to them now. I was talking about launch the game was a massive failure. because they ignore the simplest fan feedback. you think that if they listened the first time around they would need to rebuild it?
@sirdrake and anyone else that disagrees with Rai. As someone who was in the FFXIV beta, I can tell you that they pretty much ignored an etire forum of fan feedback. Which is why the game failed at launch. Which is why they're now saying "oh... the beta testers were right." and fixing the shit we told them sucked before the game was even released. Did you know that in the first beta build of FFXIV you couldn't even control the camera with the mouse? You moved with WASD and controlled the camera with IJKL. Wtf is that?! That is about the only they bothered to change from all of our feedback of "The entire way this game works is terrible. You need to revamp questing and put many more months into polish." but no. They released on schedule and then... well you know. They dun goofed. /rant
@rai and Karlnag fair enough arguments. I did not take part in the beta so i cannot comment as to how broken the game was. If Squenix did not listen to fans for XIV, it seems they are learning their lessons, albeit slowly. XIII-2 and the rebuilding of XIV seem to be examples of that. Lets just hope that they get Versus out next so we have a new FF game to hopefully worship. AND lets hope they listened to fan requests and feedback BEFORE they put out the game. :) bubbles for both! well said rebuttals with no trolling! yay!
Yeah to be honest I think it's wise of them not to remake VII. I think they know they'd probably mess it up. They're at a point where they realize they need to get their sh!t together. It is NOT the time to be remaking VII. And I'd say it's because of Wada. He's doing it all wrong. I get the feeling he's doing a lot of learning these days though. I mean, they are genuinely listening to the fans these days which is a definite step in the right direction. Hopefully Versus and XIII-2 will testify to that, and set them back on course.
I'll actually rent it and judge for myself,I don't trust Famitsu with a final fantasy review anymore,I mean final fantasy XIII got a 39/40 and it was a mediocre game at best,so saying that the second one tops it with a "1" point just isn't really that (assuring) to me. Hate it or not, that's the salty truth +and as someone else said, they gave a really low score to demon souls, one of the greatest RPGs I played this gen!
Haters gonna hate.
this will be the first highest rated game of 2012
