GameStyle - Saints Row: The Third Review

GameStyle - The Third Street Saints are back and are now even bigger than Jesus. Having come back from nothing, they have their fingers in many pies and are huge celebrities, having their names all over anything the consumer would want, including their own range of energy drinks.

I was thinking about getting this game but the humor in the game seems like I won't like it, to silly for me. Also the reviews I've seen say the world does not feel very alive.

Janitor2121d ago

Indeed, the world is lifeless, there is no variety at all in the map, the people no longer do random things.
I was seriously let down by this game. Just rent it.

Don't listen to "Janitor", he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

And the game is not as silly as the trailers would have you believe. Pretty much every silly/weird/perverted thing you've seen in the trailer is all that's in SR3, there's not much ridiculousness beyond that though.

I just finished the game today and can honestly say that it's my game of the year so far, just slightly beating out Skyrim (Skyrim is a better game, but I had continuous and consistent fun with Saint's Row, while Skyrim is work, fun, work, fun).

If you're too uptight and expect everything you play to be serious, then you probably wont like it though. But if you know what it means to be a gamer and can love games simply for the pure fun factor, then you would do yourself a great disservice by not picking up Saints Row The Third.

The citizens aren't as detailed or differed as a game like Red Dead Redemption, but they most certainly aren't "lifeless".

Looking a little through Janitors comment history, it looks like he's just pissed that Saint's Row 3 didn't make as huge a jump that the second made from the first, and while that is true, Saint's Row The Third is still a VERY GOOD game that should not be missed if you are a fan of sandbox games.

xX-StolenSoul-Xx2121d ago

Maybe i'll rent to game and Give it a try. Some free roam multiplayer would have made it a day 1 buy though.

Janitor2121d ago (Edited 2121d ago )

@vickers- What the hell are you talking about? I'm not pissed, I'm actually quite flattered you mentioned me twice and took the time to check out my comment history. Back on subject, you're damn right it didn't make a huge jump, it fell backwards. Care to back up your statement? Ok, for every one thing you say they added since SR2 I will name two or three things that were removed. We can do this right here in the comments section. Don't get wrong, on it's own its a decent game, but as a sequel it fails.

vickers5002120d ago (Edited 2120d ago )

On it's own it's a decent game? Bullsh*t, on it's own it's a great game. It took a step backwards in some areas, but a lot of those things it removed weren't really all that great to begin with.

It removed multiplayer, which while was OKAY, wasn't something you wanted to ever play more than one match of. They still have co-op though so you can still run around the city with a friend, which is the only multiplayer component of that game I ever actually spent any real time on.

They removed septic avenger, which like multiplayer, was one of those things that was sort of fun, but not something you really want to spend time on.

There's probably more, but there were only about 3 or 4 things during my 20-26 hour playthrough of Saint's Row The Third that I actually noticed and missed from Saint's Row 2.

And while SR3 may not add a lot new, it improves itself in almost all of its areas. For one, the game looks SOOOOOO much better than the ugly Saints Row 2 (don't get me wrong, I LOVED SR2, but it looked like a pile of dog sh*t in terms of graphics), the gunplay is FAR better than SR2, it actually feels like a modern third person shooter as opposed to SR2s outdated ps2 style gameplay.

"I'm actually quite flattered you mentioned me twice and took the time to check out my comment history."

I only check someones comment history when I see multiple comments on the same article by the same person bashing a game at every opportunity to see if they've been doing it on every article (see if they've simply been trolling or if they're fanboys so I can recognize them in the future and ignore them), just to see why a person would make such comments, and I only ever skim through the first page, which took less than two minutes.

And really? You "really like" mw3? You're complaining about Saint's Row The Third taking away a few (mostly unimportant) things, yet Modern Warfare 3, probably the worst CoD to date, milked to death, a shell of what it used to be that has just been ran into the ground and is just so terrible it's beyond recognition, AND YOU REALLY LIKE IT?!

That's why I look at comment history, to find of idiocy or contradiction.

If you seriously complaining about Saint's Row The Third taking away a few things, yet happen to be okay with that rehashed garbage (MW3), then I'm sorry, but I have no respect for you as a gamer.

You probably wish you had only rented Saint's Row The Third based on your suggestion to Stolen Soul, would I be correct? Yet I'm willing to bet you have no regrets purchasing a p.o.s. rehash (if you did purchase it and not just simply rent it, which I'm willing to bet that you did buy it).

If that's the case, then as I said before, you lose all credibility as a gamer.

Way to personally attack someone who is right about a certain video game on a website. Bravo.

The game, like Janitor said, is good, as it's own game. If it wasn't a sequel to SR2, it would be a fun game. Just like Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. It is, a spin-off. It's not a real "Saints Row" game. The amount of stuff alone they took out was enough to shut me down. "I can buy all these buildings and properties, to stare at." Exploration was a major factor in the Row. Playing the game from day one I can't say I enjoy anything but the story, and I've yet to beat it yet.

The graphics may be better than SR2, but they were fine, cause, you know, graphics don't matter right? That's how the window.

Gunplay maybe more fluid, but the guns are terrible. why is the pistol the best weapon in the game to me? Every other gun, (shotguns, smgs, rifles) takes 300 times more bullets to kill than the pistol? I'm not understanding.

Why are my clothes options limited to pieces of outfits? Where are my base shirts with their own options? Why are my shoes dirty when I just bought them?

Lets add new cars! 4 of them, take out 27 of the other ones. They'll like that right?

I was going to play the activities anyway, why are you forcing them on me? From the main mission I completely ignored the story to run around and be an ass to find out there wasn't much to do.

I could go on. But you wont listen maybe, as you did with that other gentleman, and shout me down.

tl;dr, don't buy the game for full price, anyone. Catch it on the deal. I'm trying to sell my copy on Craigslist, and continue to play SR2.

@firefoxmccloud

"The graphics may be better than SR2, but they were fine, cause, you know, graphics don't matter right?"

No one ever said "they don't matter". They're just not the most important thing in the game. I however would prefer the new graphics to the few irrelevant things they took out.

"The game, like Janitor said, is good, as it's own game. If it wasn't a sequel to SR2, it would be a fun game."

It's still a better open world game than like 97% of the open world games out there (excluding RPGs). Even if it's only half as good as Saints Row 2, it's still one of the best.

"but the guns are terrible. why is the pistol the best weapon in the game to me? Every other gun, (shotguns, smgs, rifles) takes 300 times more bullets to kill than the pistol? I'm not understanding."

Have you even tried the SMGs fully upgraded? They rip enemies through enemies in no time, pretty much just as fast as the dual pistols with explosive rounds, and the reason that the assault rifles take more bullets to kill is that they have more ammo so they expect you to use them more. If every assault rifle killed an enemy in two bullets, you would never need to buy ammo and it just wouldn't be a very fun gun to use. Not to mention the rounds in the upgraded pistol are explosive, while the ones found in the assault rifle aren't.

"Why are my clothes options limited to pieces of outfits?"

Disappointing? Yes. Game ruining? Only if you are a whiny little b*tch who complains about everything.

"Lets add new cars! 4 of them, take out 27 of the other ones. They'll like that right?"

I didn't notice. Every car I would ever use is already in the game. Besides, I always opt for the vtol or the tornado to get around when possible.

"I was going to play the activities anyway, why are you forcing them on me?"

To teach you how to do them and force some of the lazier gamers to do more than just plow through the story.

"tl;dr, don't buy the game for full price, anyone. Catch it on the deal. I'm trying to sell my copy on Craigslist, and continue to play SR2."

It's okay if you're a negative little twat who likes to complain about everything, but don't go around spreading your petty criticisms to others who may not have ever played Saint's Row and ruin a potentially awesome experience for them. I missed out on Saints Row 2 the first time around because I decided to listen to whiny, b*tchy comments like yours. I really wish others will not make the same mistake I once made and listen to people like you.

People like vickers are funny. Cause, you know, I said it was a good game as it's own, and apparently that means it's a bad game. Sorry bro.
