Skyrim Players 'Won't Know' They Want Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Skyrim is in the hands of millions of players right now, and for some, it's already considered Game of the Year. Bethesda created a game that can be played endlessly and for many, many months - so should the team behind 38 Studios' Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning be concerned even though their game launches a few months later, in early 2012? (Industry, Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim)

I would say no b/c ppl will still go out and pick up Amalur:Reckoning regardless on Skyrim. Sure A:R probably won't get as much sell figures as Skryim but I still think the game will do great.

new IPs from obscure devs rarely get massive sales. But I'm liking everything I hear about the game so I'll probably pick it up near launch, provided it doesn't turn out to be a massive let down(hoping for early reviews).

This game will do a lot better than new IPs e.g. Deamon Souls for a few reasons. The first is that Elder Scrolls fans with be excited that Ken Rolsten from Morrowind is lead on the RPG gamplay and feel of the game; Then you have the great writer, Salvator, who created the theme and story for this vast, fantasy world; Those to world be enough, but then you add that the art director and animator is a wel know comic book artist, Roman.

So what we have here is a Big Huge open WRPG, that is expected to have the type of interactive depth and exploration as ELderscrolls, with the possiblity of having just as much lore because of the writer, and great action design and animation because of the art directon.

With all that, its going to be be hard for this game to not sell very well as a new IP. What Skyrim does is ensure that it will have long legs. As people move away from skyrim and are looking for a game to give that amount of freedom and content, this will be the only game out there to come close.

All that doesn't mean much, things like Ken Rolsten's involvement and the great writing (the whole 10,000 year history of the world thing is amazing) will only be known by a minority of gamers. Its word to mouth and good reviews that will help prop up the sales. It won't do anything close to skyrim or other big established franchises in terms of sales.

Its a sad fact and a bit of a catch 22 thing there; The established games are the ones which sell very well, but to become an established or known franchise you need to sell your new games well...see what I mean.

My biggest fear with this game is that it's a MMO botch job. A MMO project converted to single player does not sound promising. From what I've seen of the vids online the world seem to have that MMO zone-ish feel to it.
