New CoD and Guitar Hero coming 'on an annual basis'

Activision Blizzard, the new company formed by a merger between Activision and Vivendi, has revealed that it will be making new games in franchises like Call of Duty and Guitar Hero "on an annual basis".

It's a move that sounds a lot like rival publishing behemoth EA's strategy of pumping out new versions of its core titles every year. EA has been criticised by some gamers for focusing on this model of publishing over high quality new games.

Speaking in a conference call today, Robert Kotick, chairman and CEO of Activision, said: "You can expect virtually every one of those properties (its 10 multi-million unit-selling franchises) will be exploited on an annual or close to annual basis."

not too sure if thats such a good idea especialy for guitar hero they are gonna keep bringing it on till we lose interest. take ur time to make significant improvemend and not jst new songs.

Agreed. Especially when they could just keep releasing dowloadable content instead of a new media disk every year. New game modes, venues, songs, and in game store content can be added with add ons and patches, if they decide to update the gameplay. I don't need a legion of plastic guitars sitting around my house like I'm Nigel effing Tufnel.

this is why EA should NOT be allowed to make a CONSOLE.

yea i dont like this idea. i dont want them to become the next EA

sure they're now a mega studio but an annual release is traditionally not the best way forward for a franchise, case in point the pro evo soccer series (there never seems to be enough time to make all but the most marginal of improvements)

Splinter cell, the fluctuation in quality between SC1, pandora tomorrow chaos theory and the rotation of dev teams between montreal and shanghai to keep up the churning is not something you want to see with the call of duty series (though COD3 already took that loop)

take your time, masterpieces like Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Metal Gear, Gears of War, Bioshock and all the other good stuff all came out of extensive processes

if on the other hand the merger means they now have significantly increased dev resources then by all means bring it!

Guitar hero wont be too bad cus its not exactly a complicated game that needs innovation, but COD will just go downhill
