Hands On: Resistance FoM

"Though the PlayStation 3 looks to have a pretty strong launch lineup from third-party developers, Sony itself may send off the console with the strongest game of the bunch. Resistance: Fall of Man is wrapping up development over at Insomniac Games."

I will buy this game to go along with my awesome PS3 package to sell on eBay. Mmmmmm....

... and probably pick it up later when I get my own PS3. Reading this preview and seeing these screens is getting me pretty excited about this game.

I know that eventually someone will bring up GOW, so let me be the first, since it will doubtless happen anyway.

Let me be the first to say that this game (RFOM) looks great. Nice visuals, sweet weapons, and excellent evironments. Look at the new ign videos, they're really good. However, I went ahead and compared these new videos to ign's GOW movies from 4 months ago (keep in mind, the GOW videos were four months old, and the final product will look much more polished). While the GOW video's were in a significantly lower resolution, I did notice a few major differences. For one thing, RFOM had better particles. I'm not going to go into detail, but they looked better. However one thing glared at me from watching the two videos. Where is the RFOM AI? I mean, when you start running at enemies in RFOM, they just stand there. They dont run for cover, or charge you, or anything. In GOW, the locust are constantly hiding behind cover, moving, adjusting to the battle. I mean, do you notice how 4 or 5 locust put up a much better fight than 30-40 enemies from RFOM. And that movie was from 4 months ago. If you ask me, RFOM lacks badly in that category.

Another thing is the gun that shoots through matter. Why? It completely screws up multiplayer, and looks to be purposely taking a step (or three) in the opposite direction of GOW, where cover is essential. Cool idea on paper, but in reality? I don't think so.

Now I'm not dissing RFOM, it looks to be a really cool game, but is it worth $600? My opinion: No. Any others?

shoota333875d ago

would you fanboys stop saying" its not worth 600$" We are not paying 600$ for just one game. But in that case i could say in GOW worth 400$ the answer is NO!

HyperBear3875d ago

on the other RFOM page above this one. Its interesting.

Bill Nye3875d ago (Edited 3875d ago )

IGN seemed to like the AI. Read the preview.

To me, GOW (UE 3) looks 'better' than FOM in the same way DOOM 3 looked better than HL2 when they first came out. Though, upon closer examination, I think HL2's source engine is much better looking than DOOM's.

Aramis0013875d ago (Edited 3875d ago )

Look gametime, I said that MY OPINION is that it's not worth $600. Don't flame unnecessarily. Back up your opinions with facts or observations.

EDIT: Curse you gametime for making me use up one of my thought bubbles! Hybrbear good reply, copy and paste it here. Your right, I did not mention other things people will be getting a ps3 for. I considered peoples taste and basically cancelled out the extras on both side, comparing biggest exclusive vs. biggest exclusive.

THE TRUTH3875d ago (Edited 3875d ago )

This is what IGN had to say about RFOM A.I.

"Perhaps one of the most impressive yet non-hyped things about the game thus far is its AI. Enemies range in intelligence depending upon who/what they are, so animalistic creatures will still be single-minded, but the soldiers are a different story. They'll use cover whenever possible, fire off blind shots just to keep you guessing and even try to flank you when given the chance. In one case, we came into a room and spotted a Chimera on the other side, standing in an opposite doorway. It fired off a handful of shots and stepped behind the wall. Thinking that we'd flank him, we set off to the right and attempted to surprise him by going around the room. Not so fast, it seems, as the Chimera had exactly the same idea. Clever girl... err, alien."

Aramis001: I CANT BELIEVE YOU WOULD MAKE SUCH A STATEMENT AS: "However one thing glared at me from watching the two videos. Where is the RFOM AI?" **AND**: "I mean, do you notice how 4 or 5 locust put up a much better fight than 30-40 enemies from RFOM. And that movie was from 4 months ago. If you ask me, RFOM lacks badly in that category."

WOW did you even read the article before posting that nonsense? Is your hatered for Sony blinding you that much? Grow Up and GET IT TOGETHER!!!

RFOM is for real and I think it has the makings of a great game with new ideas and a great origional story (nice twist on history). TGS is where I will make my final judgesment but thus far RFOM has live up to the hype

Im personally more interested in Gears of War, offers something new and innovative. However, I cannot say which one is better, nor can anyone else. If you get a PS3, I'd recommend you get this game, because it appears to be the only intriguing launch title. If you get a 360, I recommend Gears of War. Both look great, and even though im staying on the fence, im probably still going to get attacked. Wait, thanks to this fantastic comment system im safe =D. Thanks N4G

Bill Nye3875d ago (Edited 3875d ago )

Gears of War is NOT innovative. The gameplay is in the likings of KillSwitch or Winback, both of which sucked balls.

However, GOW might actually pull off the 'stop and pop' gameplay with considerable flare. Otherwise, until I have a chance to play it, GOW looks like it plays just like KillSwitch and Winback...

DJ3875d ago

It was only ten dollars, but i hated it nonetheless. This game can't be compared to Gears. They don't have the same gameplay mechanics, let alone number of allies/enemies onscreen at once.

Bill Nye3875d ago

Don't have the same gameplay mechanics? Behold:

KillSwitch -

Gears of War -

DJ3875d ago

I meant that Resistance and GoW don't have the same gameplay mechanics. =P I'd sell Killswitch back to Gamestop, but they'll only give me a $1 back...so I guess it's now a priceless relic. A shining example of how NOT to make a game.

WHY OH SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHY!!! Why do we have to compare GOW to RFOM everytime info is released on RFOM... This is just ridiculous, can't we just accept that both games are impressive in their own ways and appreciate each game for what they are?

We have debated this topic over and over and over again! Give it a rest!!!

"Another thing is the gun that shoots through matter. Why? It completely screws up multiplayer, and looks to be purposely taking a step (or three) in the opposite direction of GOW, where cover is essential. Cool idea on paper, but in reality? I don't think so."

Who knows how this gun shooting through matter will play out, but one thing I can tell you for sure is that Insomniac knows how to make great and innovative weapons! Anyone who disagrees needs to pick up a copy of Rachet and Clank 3 ASAP!!

The game will be playable at TGS where will can all get a better understanding of this game from several different viewpoints and TGS is only 7 days away so be patient and hold your judgments until we get the whole picture.

I can't stress my point enough that RFOM and GOW should not be compared. If they are to be compared can we at least wait til we get more info on both games to make a fair and unbiased opinion, because frankly until we do it's no more than PS3 vs. 360 debates and each fanboy will just choose their side/game until thier comment bubbles disappear!

**EDIT** Wether or not you like this game should have nothing to do with GOW, or the price point of PS3. The dumbest statement you can ever make would be "it looks to be a really cool game, but is it worth $600? My opinion: No." Because no game cost that much and no one should justify the value of a console based on one game especially not a launch title!

Aramis0013875d ago

GOW and RFOM are being compared because they are likely to be the biggest system sellers when they are released, so it is very relavant to Sony, and in turn, RFOM. I understand that they are different types of games, but they are the best each console will offer, and will be compared by consumers to decide which sytem they want. Although different in genre, by being released at the same at such a pivitol point in the console war they are now mortally entangled in the war, and will be subject to comparison, no matter how much you whine about it.
I will admit it was a mistake on my part to bring up the $600 issue. Never should have said it, it was a stupid thing to say, and I'm sorry for it.

THE TRUTH3875d ago

**However you wanna justify your comments or comparisions means nothing because the way you "TRIED" to make your point!**

You didn't even read the article before you posted!! Therefore the statements you made were unfair and very biased TO SAY THE VERY LEAST!!

"IF" your going to compare RFOM and GOW or comment on this news then at least do us the favor of reading the news FIRST!!

beans3875d ago

Well since everybody is comparing RFOM and GOW why not throw in Zelda and Metroid! I mean can either of these games compete with the all mighty Link?

LiquifiedArt3875d ago

I really see this game as being a great starter game for the ps3. I want all of em pretty much, but this and whatever else i see enticing at TGS will be a must!
