IGN: Minecraft Review

No other video game has unleashed my creativity like Minecraft. I've spent countless hours chipping away at blocks, gathering the necessary materials to complete the next masterpiece that would otherwise only occupy my mind's eye. I've also spent just as many hours exploring, spelunking and slashing my way through monsters with bravado. My character – my entire Minecraft world – constantly evolves into whatever I want it to be. I tell my own stories, I write my own destiny and I bring my fantasies to life one brick at a time. (Minecraft, PC) 9/10

Graphics 8.5? GTFO here IGN. If they are seeing 20$ game for 8.5 graphics then all XBL and PSN games should have been given 10/10. IGN just doesn't understand the amount of effort put by developers to make even a arcade game. Here on IGN is joke as of Nov.24th 2011. I can't even remotely think to give Minecraft Graphics 0.1. Even the worlds first 3d game hovertank 3d game has better graphics than Minecraft

Well, it intentionally looks like that. Sorta like Grindhouse? Bad intentionally which exposes its inner genius?

But whatever. It's not like someone was waiting for the IGN review to buy minecraft.

This game doesn't seem that fun to me. My little brother is addicted to it, but I just don't get it.

It's quite fun if you like exploring and building. My friends and I ran a private server for a couple of months that we used to play during/between classes. We had a little village that we could play in and explore.

Put me in that same camp. I just don't get it. In the spring I graduated from a programming course. There were some design students just fascinated by this game. "Look, I just spent 12 hours mining obsidian so I could build a replica of the death star!" The rest of the programming group I was in just shook their heads.

More power to the guys that came up with this because they certainly tapped into something. I just don't get what that something is.

That something is unlimited potential.

Well, from a Designer's perspective, the game is simple, and while far from having paramount Game Design, it has a lot going for it. The sheer sense of freedom, the element of exploration, the threshold for creativity, and the pick-up and play nature of the game make it very captivating for the creative mind.

Think of it as painting with blocks in your own 3-Dimensional land with limitless potential and easy accessibility.

If you really want to see why this is a designer's wet dream, just look at the mods ^ ^

Minecraft is a rare case of Substance over Style. Not to say it isn't endearing it is, whilst it may not be running on the Crysis engine is looks good in a retro way.

The feeling of achievement when you craft your first tool is great plus the almost endless combinations of materials makes this game one for the "still playing it 10 years later" pile.

Man, this game is so awesome and the stuff I see amazes me. What a simple concept

Not my type of game, but I'm glad this industry caters for so many different tastes.

Wouldn't surprise me if at least one major site doesn't give Minecraft a GOTY award, just to be 'edgy'.

It's a fantastic concept and game.
