Dan Houser: 3D Does not Enhance the Gameplay; Unsure about 3D support in Max Payne 3

GB : Dan Houser one of the leading people behind Rockstar Games was slightly vocal about 3D and its implementation in games. He questions whether 3D is beneficial for games when it comes to gameplay aspect, because we all know it adds depth to the graphics. (PC, PS3, Rockstar Games, Xbox 360)

thank you! I've been saying this exact same thing! 3D in no way enhances game play. Not even for seeing how far away something is. I don't think anyone has ever complained about a game failing because they couldn't tell how far in the distance things were.

3D is a gimmick and nothing more. It's nice to have it optional for users who want it, but the fact is, it's not the next big step in gaming at all. It's the same as motion controls. a gimmick that will fade away in due time.

I think 3D is great with some games, but not great for others.

Just Cause 2, Dead Rising 2, The Witcher 2, Flatout & Batman AA are all amazing in 3d. It makes the games much more immersive for me, granted it does not improve gameplay but it does improve the experience.

Battlefield 3 is quite poor in 3d, it just does not work well for fps games imo. I find it too difficult to aim, and seem to do much better in 2d!

I enjoy it for singleplayer games but don't enjoy it for multiplayer. I do like the depth it adds.

Haha, finally someone with common sense, I was getting a little worried about the mental health of the internet for a while.

3D highly enhances the gaming experience.... if done right, you know... effort put into it. If it enhances the experience does it not contribute to the enjoy ability of the game and gameplay? I'm pretty sure that it indirectly enhances the gameplay by enhancing the overall experience.. if done right. I play games with much more surround awareness in 3D then in 2D.

On console, 3D's biggest problem is the loss of quality. However, whilst 3D does not add to the gameplay, as already said, the depth adds to the overall experience rather than being intrusive on the gameplay which is many ways is a good thing. I guess Houser believes bullet-time which does impact the gameplay is more relevant.

He's right about most games, but Super Mario 3D Land would like to have word. 3D is used in the most creative ways ever in that game, and it absolutely enhances the experience and the gameplay.

God just forget about it. Whether or not the game supports 3D has no impact on the scores it's going to receive or the general approval of the public. Most people don't really care about 3D when it comes to gaming.

Just work on the game and get it out.

He should play U3 in 3D. An eye opener IMO.

He really should. Maybe he'll get the point then.

If done right then yes 3D does enhance gameplay.
Its too early to be implementing 3D in games though. Its just a gimmick right now(on most games) and no one has a 3DTV.

Better watch out for the ninty fans who thing this is the next revolutionary new thing. I find it counter productive in alot of my games (Anything from bioshock to mirrors edge). I usually turn it off for anything other than sight seeing because it makes games more difficult to play, at least for me.

it seems like after rumble and analogs, no one don't care about moving forward with anything when it come to games. I'm just curious about what will be the next innovation for game-play that gamers will accept because it will not be like this forever.
