What makes The Legend of Zelda so special?

The Pixel Press writes: "The Legend of Zelda – a franchise whose heralded name has become practically synonymous with the world of videogames. An epic 25 years in the making which has been there since the days of the NES, and looks set to continue inspiring and influencing the industry for the forseeable future. How has this relatively ancient series managed to stay relevant in today’s gaming landscape? On Zelda‘s silver anniversary, we look at what it is exactly that makes this most timeless of tales so endearing." (3DS, GameCube, Nintendo DS, Retro, The Legend of Zelda, Wii, Wii U, Zelda Wii U)

Zelda isn't just a game... It's a magical journey that will make you laugh, cry and rejoice in the end.

What makes Zelda so special, you ask? EVERYTHING!

Age and Nostalgia.

For me it's just a very unique game.
It creates a magical world, filled with puzzle solving, action and adventure.

The only game I can think of that has come close to it in recent times is Darksiders, which I also loved.

Sounds to me like this guy didn't like TP. Just because a game is darker and has cusswords doesn't mean it is immature, though we really don't want zelda to go the cussing route. I felt like TP drew me in the most out of any zelda title because of its serious mood, but I like SS style too, there are two different appeals. I actually didn't like wind waker though, the game just looked too cartoony, but SS looks more like an impressionist painting.

u dident like windwaker cus it looked to cartoony? it was ment to be like a cartoon and it did that very well it felt like were controling an epic carton but cus u dont like th elook does not mean u dont like the game cus its still zelda and i hope u dont like bango kazoio or w.e its name is us thats more cartoony then zelda even the name :/

I didn't mean to say I didn't like the game, I meant to say I didn't like the style. Banjo Kazooie has a very different appeal than zelda, I feel like zelda is meant to be an epic adventure, and the cartoonyness made it feel less so. I'm not dissing anyone who liked the style, I just don't like it much myself. Or I just perfer the darker look for a zelda game. If you think it still made it epic, then I guess that's my problem.

I agree. The Wind Waker story was very good but it lost the epic feel with the cartoony art style. It looks fantastic, but how I imagine a perfect Zelda game is with the TP or maybe SS art style. I want Zelda to be epic and serious, but that may be because OoT was my first Zelda game.
The Ganon battle in TP was truly epic in comparison to the WW ganon battle in my opinion.
I guess it all comes down to wich relation people have to Zelda.

It's epicness... that's why it is so special, good boss battles (not challenging but great still), story, characters, puzzles...

you say nostalgia? not to all people.. I'm a new zelda player (started from TP) and now I play other zeldas too, addictive games, really... I'm not a big fan of RPG, but titles like Zeldas and Okami are great! :)
