Holy Moly: If you use the internet, watch TV or leave your house occasionally, then there's a very reasonable chance you will have heard of Bethesda's newest role-playing game, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Pretty unusual, given that it's not exactly the type of game you would expect to see receiving such a large amount of attention from the mainstream media.
After all, there's no guns, no terrorist plots, no cars, no sports, no dance-offs and only a very small section devoted to interior decoration. In short, it's a game that not so long ago would have been almost entirely populated by hairy-palmed computer science undergrads and slightly less hairy-palmed celebrity journalists.
Replaying Skyrim after 13 years is a reminder of the progress made in western RPGs over the last decade, but also what's been lost.
RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.
