Digital Foundry Face-Off: Skyrim

Welcome to Skyrim, Bethesda's long-awaited fantasy opus where you're free to carve out your own adventure. And of course, welcome to the new engine that powers the open-world experience, plainly dubbed the "Creation Engine". Although still partially based on the Gamebryo code that runs behind the scenes in Oblivion and Fallout 3, much has been made by Bethesda of how their new technology has improved character animations, lengthened draw distances on scenery and enhanced the game's AI systems. But put into practice on all three formats, are the differences really big enough to warrant this rebranding?

So the 360 version of a Bethesda game is better than the PS3 version? Shocking! /s

hennessey862201d ago

a purpose made engine for the ps3 then its usually going to look better on the xbox

LightofDarkness2201d ago (Edited 2201d ago )

All PS3 engines must be tailored to function on the PS3, just like all 360 engines and all PC engines.

If the GAME was being developed exclusively for the PS3 and platform parity wasn't an issue, then things might be different. But the engine is purpose made for PS3 use.

gamingdroid2198d ago

It's also well known that the PS3 is a pain to program for compared to the competition.

NukaCola2201d ago

Guess it is to be expected. Still got the PS3 version, but WTF Bethesda? I think a patch would help. Fallout New Vegas is 10x better on PS3 now than at launch. There should be a way for them to patch the PS3 version, to render better. They should of put some effort into Sony's console.

Fishy Fingers2201d ago (Edited 2201d ago )

I'm sure they put a LOT of effort into it, but it's development was lead on the 360 so you'd expect slightly better results. Rightfully so really as I think 50%+ of the sales were 360.

StanLee2200d ago

@ Fishy Fingers

Sales has nothing to do with the quality of a product. It doesn't matter which versions sells more, there should be parity, in development as well as in the final product.

Pyscho_Mantis2200d ago

^^^fishy were did you get those numbers from.....lemme gues vgchartz....*sigh*

frostypants2200d ago (Edited 2200d ago )

Meh. I own both platforms but bought it for the PS3...only because I didn't want to put the strain on my 360's DVD drive (as the article points out, the game suffers from an HD install on the 360...which seems completely backwards...). You also need to use the d-pad in the items/map menu, and the d-pad on the 360 controller is nightmarishly bad (to the point that I wish devs would just disable it in their games).

Anon19742200d ago

Yeah, I'll be picking this one up on my PS3 as well. For me, the issue comes down to the 360 hardware. I had Oblivion crater one of my 360's, and considering the issues I've had with the 360 hardware, and that the 360 they sent me last was older than the one it replaced, I don't have much confidence when it comes to playing games that lend themselves to extended gaming sessions. There's no way I'm getting 50 hours into this game just to have my old 360 finally up and die on me, because I'm not buying another.

The fact that you need to use the d-pad all the time is a deal breaker as well for me.

frostypants2200d ago

Gotta LOL at anyone who disagrees with the state of the d-pad on the otherwise excellent 360 controller...c'mon people, the thing is fundamentally broken...

mittwaffen2200d ago (Edited 2200d ago )

Frosty; you might wanna come out from under that fanboy rock. Dpad issue has been fixed since the slim came out with the revision on the controller.

Gotta LOL @ people who cant use the 'meh' dpad, it works if you have the ability to understand how to use it.

But ill just lol @ how you have no idea the issue has been fixed, got a new 360 controller for my PC, since the PS3 one isnt as ergonomically correct for the human hand. Dpad works fine on it.

Guess you made a mistake with the version you bought.

MRMagoo1232200d ago

@mittwaffen

"got a new 360 controller for my PC, since the PS3 one isnt as ergonomically correct for the human hand"

LMAO so your saying your thumbs are not symmetrical

FanboyPunisher2200d ago

mangoo

I dont think you understood what he was sayin.
What you said makes no logic.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr32200d ago

You have both consoles and you're picking the inferior version would be a reason people disagreeing with you

SDF Repellent2200d ago (Edited 2200d ago )

For people with only PS3 I understand but if you have both consoles, there is no reason to not get the superior version. This is a single player, no online game so friend's list preference is irrelevant. Plus you get your chance to get a one month's timed exclusive DLCs on X360 when they became available. This is a no-brainer for owners of both consoles.

MRMagoo1232200d ago

If your on a pc at home right now take your own advice and get the pc version which is by far the better one even on low settings

yewles12200d ago

ZeniMax as a whole and Sony's PS3 just don't mix... -_-'

AngelicIceDiamond2200d ago (Edited 2200d ago )

Wow no game is better than the other its the same, don't you all have some Dragons to kill?

gypsygib2200d ago

Im still unsure which version to get, I absolutely hate screen tear (much more than mild to medium frame rate drops) and the 360 dpad is rubbish.

But I don't want geometry pop-in either and I don't have a PC.
