Joystiq: This is a column by Jason Schreier dedicated to the analysis (and occasional mocking) of his favorite genre, the Japanese role-playing game. Whether it's because they're too antiquated or just too niche, he believes JRPGs don't get enough attention in the gaming industry today. It's time to change that.
People be too busy stroking it to every single shooting game that comes out. Western game journalists don't want nothin' without at least two of the following:
-Guns as a primary weapon
-First-person perspective
-Pro sports
-Cars that can be raced and/or stolen
Also Final Fantasy is a JRPG.
Also, Metal Gear actually does have 2 of those (first person when aiming, guns as main weapon), though it's beside the point.
Also this is about media, not players. The part which I quoted is talking about JRPGs not getting attention from media.
I completely agree with you. We're just talking about two different things. The above article and I are talking about JRPGs not getting a lot of media coverage. You are talking about "let the players play." I am a firm supporter of both ideas :)
Yes. I know FFXIII is a JRPG. ...?
Dunno if it is out in other regions though.
It was half-price via a PS Plus offer, so only cost me 300 Yen too.
Currently about 19 hours in.
is it because FPS are a favorite for most american gamers / journalist?
and it's cool to bash JRPG?
