Uncharted 3 lacks predecessor’s pacing | Technique Review

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was not only one of the best games on the Playstation 3, but one of the best video games to date. It featured a fun sharply-written script, engaging gameplay, a brilliant soundtrack and the best cinematic pacing ever presented in a videogame. Needless to say, expectations for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception were extremely high. While Uncharted 3 is a tremendously satisfying game and one of the best releases of 2011, it fails to fully live up to the legacy of its legendary predecessor.

49erguy4547d ago (Edited 4547d ago )

"we don’t actually learn how Drake got his start as a thief, or what is driving him to follow in the footsteps of his ancestor."

I feel the same way. In the trailer when Sully says, "I taught you better than that," I thought the story would be more personal.

Also U3 started very slow and the first pistol (unsilenced) you use in the game is TERRIBLE. I have the sensitivity turned to MAX and it still feels like CRAP.

I love the game, but I can't argue with the regress in terms of story and pacing. If the first half of the game was as good as the second it'd be as good if not better than U2

Thunderflash924547d ago

What!?? Were you listening to the story man ? Thats explained, also its in his blood aswell, I think you should play it again.

What does it matter if it started slow?? Also all the weapons in the game are awesome and they are good and useful in their own way.

Theres nothing wrong with this game at all and it is better than Uncharted 2 by a bit.

49erguy4547d ago

There's no sense in responding to you. I love Uncharted as well but your comment history shows that there's no discussing anything with you besides the fact that the game is, in your words "game of the century."

Thunderflash924547d ago (Edited 4547d ago )

Sorry if that sounded rude, but its the truth.

Its only the truth, and my opinion.

Akiba964547d ago

@thunderflash lol "It's only the truth and my opinion" That may be the biggest contradiction ive read on here all year.

My own opinion is that Uncharted 3 was paced excellently. Their was never a single dull moment in the game. When ever the combat started getting a little too much I reached a relaxed section where I was solving a puzzle or platforming.

I also thought the game started off amazingly. Right after the part where drake says the quote, the bass kicked the game off into this kinda heist song. Idk about anyone else but i was pretty much instantly engaged and wasnt let go until I beat it.

ASTAROTH4547d ago

At least to me it started better than the Uncharted 2 train wreck and that ugly stealthy chapter with Flint. The bar figth in Uncharted 3 is just amazing. Its just a matter of prefference and I preffer the most underrated of all the Uncharted... The first one ( Drakes Fortune). U3 is better than most games in 2011, but everybody is looking for its "flaws"... something that didnt happened to MW3, Batman AC and Skyrym...

Knushwood Butt4546d ago

Agree that 3 started off better than 2. I played the train wreck again the other day and it's just not fun.

Still, character and story in 3 is no where near as good as in 2.

I'm not certain, but I think Drake's Fortune may be my favourite too. Beat it again the other week.

Whatever, 3 is my least favourite of the series, although what I played of the online game yesterday was a lot of fun.

Jayjayff4547d ago

We actually do thought, i mean it wasn't explain in a "Right in your face" manner but it was mention, plus the fact that they did it so vaguely tells me it might appear in a latter game, the one for psp maybe?

TheBlackMask4547d ago (Edited 4547d ago )

Whats the point telling us EVERYTHING about Nathan Drake, it's the whole point I like him so much....to us he's this everyday treasure hunting theif who plays the action hero but deep down ND have made it so Drake has a dark past and with each game that goes by it gives us small bits of info at what he was like, what he did and what turned him into the person we play as.

<Small Spoilers>

We got something in U3 and I think it was enough....we saw how Drake and Sully became friends, that Drake became an orphan, his mother commited suicide and his dad must of been an arsehole for abandoning him. Don't you think it gives you this impression that with these things he had to deal with at a young age he used history, which he was obsessed with and sir francis Drake as a way to escape the crappy life he had......maybe he made it up that he was Sir Francis Drakes ancestor and thats why he changed his name.

Having a mysterious character is the best thing you can have, it's something which ND can expande on in each game...it wouldn't be fun if we found out everything in one game. I hope in U4 it will be about Nathan and Elena and ND will fill in the gaps at why they broke up twice, how Drake proposed and what the wedding was like.

I think people with their articles are just nitpicking U3 to death for no reason. Theres things we can all nit pick about Batman, Portal 2, Skyrim but in the end there still amazing games

rezzah4546d ago (Edited 4546d ago )

i believe I can answer the reason for his drive to find out about Drake...

Read 3rd para for a simpler and clear answer.

Spoilers

Who is NOT his ancestor. During the scene where he and Sully get to know one another, he mentions to Sully that he was brought up in a school where Nuns taught him Latin...Ok so going with this it is safe to say that he was brought up in a orphanage; further proof of this is where Lady Villain (forgot her name) sits down with Drake and basically reveals his past to us. It is also very likely that as a orphan Drake did not know his own identity, and by not knowing who he was or who his parents where he was a child who turned to crime, a problem child. While growing up in the orphanage ruled by Nuns, they must of taught him about the history of Drake. The name of the school, mentioned in the convo with Sully or Villain lady, is proof of the history influence on Drake himself. So Drake was deeply influenced by Drake and his adventures, which is why he knows everything about the real Drake; it is also why he created a false identity of Nathan Drake, to follow along in his footsteps.

About learning to become a thief...It is something that can be learnt overtime, notice in other movies (such as disney's aladin) the boy is a street rat. Children are street rats by learning to survive by themselves on the street, not being taught how to steal. So what Sully taught drake was how to not be "sloopy" in his ways of being a theif, basically teaching Drake how to be a much better theif (and possibly how to kill) than what he already was.

So to sum it all up and make it simpler (if it was confusing to follow)...Boy's identity is unknown and doesn't know who his parents are. He is brought up in a religious school which teaches/forces him how to read and speak in latin, it is also where he learn about the history of Drake. Inspired by drake and his adventures, the boy creates an identity for himself, possibly looking up to Drake as his role model. Drake leaves his school or is kicked out for various reasons, he now lives on the streets and eventually learns to survive by becoming a street rat. After his encounter with Sully, Drake joins him and learns how to become a better thief than he already is. Sully basically shapes and forms Drake into the drake we know and play as, well almost...notice Drakes personality never really changes, this shows that Sully really only helped Drake with his thieving skills.

Also I agree with the sensitivity of the controls in the beginning, but is that really a reason to dislike that part of the game? Are we not all dumbfounded about the controls of many games at first? Or do we give a thumbs up to every game that basically spoon feeds us? In the end we get use to the "new" controls and learn to adapt, second play through will prove this as those seemingly clunky controls become smooth and acceptable.

I noticed A LOT of reading between parts during the cut scenes and entire story. Basically if you only gave half of your attention or were still unable to understand with a full attention, then you likely dislike the story in comparison to UC2, which had a easier to follow story-line. In UC3 the hardest thing to follow was Drakes and the blonde chick's marriage, as the whole ring thing was confusing since Drake didn't have his...We eventually understand the situation at the very end when Sully gives Drake his lost wedding ring. This part is the dislike part for me, but even so as long as it concluded with everything in place, no matter how much thought you had to put in to understand, it all makes sense if you read between the lines.

Edit:

lol look how long this is.

Drano4547d ago

It's not just missing that. There isn't even the cheat menu. Uncharted 2 had so much replay value just because of that (in my eyes, at least, having any gun at any time is always nice).

Thunderflash924547d ago

Some people have been saying that Uncharted 3 is having aiming problems and all that stuff, also enemies rushing in on and ganging up on you. Thats because its realistic and if there wasnt any enemies doing that then the game would be to easy. All that stuff about aiming problems and stuff is lies.

Uncharted 3 is amazing and a better game than Uncharted 2 in my opinion.

The story, technacality, graphics and gameplay are all amazing. Why fix something when its not broken ?

They made this game bigger and better in every way, and it is a masterpiece 10/10.

49erguy4547d ago

It not "lies." The aiming is noticeably slower than in U2 and the guns feel heavier. I'm not saying its better or worse but it did take some time to get used to it.

Pozzle4547d ago

"All that stuff about aiming problems and stuff is lies."

So Naughty Dog are patching the game for a problem you think doesn't exist? Okay, whatever.

beavis4play4547d ago

just like KZ2, the devs (ND in this case) aren't patching the game because there is a problem......they're doing it because too many whiny players can't handle the controls as they currently are.

TheBlackMask4547d ago

@beavis4play

OR.........and stay with me on this one

They could of kept the perfect controls from U2 and tweaked them here and there, instead of scrapping everything and building it from the ground up like how they did the same with the two betas from Summer (after patch 3) to the blindfire sprint fest (Subway)

badz1494547d ago

but since when is fast pace = great, slower pace = not so great?

the thing about UC2 is, it's fast pace and you're engaged in action one after another but certain sacrifices has been made for this - less exploration and simple and easy puzzles! this is a story about a treasure hunter and the lack of those 2 things are my only complaint about UC2. is Shambala really THAT easy to be found? kinda weird none other before Drake was able to find it!

in UC3 however, they make it slower in pace and add more puzzles that requires you to actually think to solve them! plus you're given space to wander around in most of the places so you have the chance to enjoy the magnificent landscape...yeah I know I DO! UC3 in 3D is unreal! they weren't joking when they say it's like the Avatar of gaming!

so, while being slower in pace, UC3 still manage to suck you in the storyline which exactly what the series are known for! and the ride has been AMAZING!

MerkinMax4547d ago

The projection puzzle with all of the body parts was slightly eerie...

badz1494547d ago

but I love the puzzles this time around

Hicken4547d ago

I'm hoping that it's not a problem for a game to have a different pacing than its predecessor. If so, then there's a problem with how you review games.

Analyzing 'Uncharted: Drake’s Deception' – Wait, What is The Game About?

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception has a lot to live up to as Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is an incredible and near-perfect game.

It's about retirement...oh wait

UNCHARTED2FANATIC902d ago (Edited 902d ago )

I cant even say what the point was its easily the worst story in the series. The online was a whole lot of fun though but overall doesn't come even close to 2

porkChop902d ago (Edited 902d ago )

It was a step back for sure. Personally, I thought even the MP was way better in U2. Solid game, glad I played it. I just think they didn't push as hard as they did with U2.

UNCHARTED2FANATIC897d ago

Yes both the online and story was better in 2 no doubt

Flewid638902d ago

The "young Drake" portion was pretty top notch, story-wise. But yeah, everything outside of that I felt was inferior.

DanielEndurance902d ago

Villains were all over the place in this… one second they wanted Drake dead, the next they needed him, then they want him dead again, then they coulda killed him, but poisoned his friend instead, then coulda shot him again, but had brunch with him, then needed him alive, then coulda mowed him down, but decided to kill him by fire and let him escape… Uncharted 2 was way better. 😅😅

slowgamer902d ago

=D Sounds crazy. I don't remember any of that. Played it on ps3 and I remember thinking that why was this game so bashed compared to second one. I liked it.

Chocoburger901d ago (Edited 901d ago )

Another thing that annoyed me about UC3 events was the agent Talbot teleporting around Turkey. It just felt off to me, and made no sense.

Also, for about one third of the game, you go on a wild goose chase to rescue Sully, who wasn't even there to be rescued, and you end up back where you started again. There was simply no pay off for all the events you go through, so it fell flat in that regard as if they couldn't figure out how to make the game longer, so they decided to side-track you to do something with no pay off, hoping you wouldn't notice due to all the incredible action set pieces they made.

Overall though, even with its flaws, I still enjoy the game.

TheEnigma313902d ago

This was actually my least favorite in the series. Didn't have that same impact that part 2 set.

Flewid638902d ago

Uncharted 2 is the pinnacle of the series (to me).

Granted, 4 had the best story in my opinion, but 2 was the overall best game.

Uncharted 3 Anniversary Retrospective: Shackled By Its Precursor's Legacy

A decade after its release, how does Uncharted 3 fare today? Does its story still work? Was its precursor’s legacy a bedrock or quicksand for its own aspirations?

When arguably the weakest game in the series is still awesome and more fun than most games today, you know you're onto a winner!

coolbeans903d ago

I'd extend "arguably" before awesome too. Many technically demanding scenes were jaw-dropping for the time, but it's tough to ignore the sub-par context propelling the action forward.

SullysCigar903d ago

Tough for you, perhaps, and that's fine. I enjoyed it very much. Perhaps a little less than the others in the series, but then the bar is extremely high.

I remember being blown away by the water and sand tech in U3 for the time too. It certainly was a visual treat!

LucasRuinedChildhood903d ago (Edited 903d ago )

It is very good, but when I originally played Uncharted 3 it was the most disappointed I'd ever been in a video-game because Uncharted 2 was just that good. I enjoyed 3 much more when I replayed it in the Nathan Drake Collection though. I could just enjoy it for what it is and accept that it's not Uncharted 2 - it's not a roller coaster, and it doesn't balance and rotate between action, puzzles, platforming and set-pieces in the same way.

Uncharted 3's gameplay is a bit more compartmentalized and focused on one thing at a time. I'm not surprised the scrapped version of Uncharted 4 was going to have no gunplay for the first half. It's also paced much differently - it takes a long time to get to the notable set-pieces. Uncharted 2 is insane from Nepal onwards which is about an hour into the game. haha.

I did like the introduction of chase sequences, and I love first hour (bar fight, young Drake) and from the airplane sequence onwards but I just think the rest of it just sort of meanders along without as much purpose as 2.

When it comes to the script, you can feel the absence of Neil Druckmann and Josh Scherr (writer on every other console Uncharted game). Drake gets hit in the face, and the game goes on a random side plot for an hour to give you some boat set-pieces. He then washes up on a beach close to where Elena is staying to get you back to the real plot. Drake just says "How convenient" to try make you laugh off how sloppy the plot got.

In retrospect, I'm not sure if Naughty Dog were ready to work on 2 different games at once. 3 clearly had production issues that 1 and 2 didn't have, and Hennig's version of 4 didn't work out. They had to crunch so hard to get the rebooted version done on time that Bruce Straley gave up making video-games.

coolbeans902d ago

I'll give you some props for the extra analysis. I remember Druckmann climbing his way to a writer spot in UC2, but wasn't aware of Josh Scherr. I didn't know that was the reason for Straley's departure either. That's pretty damn rough.

GhostofHorizon903d ago

They had to make some weird choices as far as story went because the actor for Cutter had to bail which left a few holes in the story.

Uncharted is one of my favourite series and while the leap from 2 to 3 was not nearly as big as the leap from 1 to 2, I think it was an amazing experience none the less.

coolbeans903d ago

Graham McTavish's departure wasn't easy, but I don't think that would fix many holes tbh. Because the main issue to consider is the precarious mindset Naughty Dog was operating on: an increased emphasis in set pieces that HAD to go in and worrying about the context later.

Petebloodyonion903d ago

I really liked part 3 ( Among Thieves is still the best in my opinion) My only complaint was the interactions with the villains and how they were a missed opportunity, Linda MacMahon (Marlowe) was an interesting antagonist due to the history with Sully and Nate but it fails basically flat especially with her ending. And I couldn't care about Navaro 2.0.

What I did love and made me care was Cutter, in the short time he was in the game you could feel that the guy was a good treasure hunter for example when he pulled his own notebook with the clues he founds so the team can escape a room.
It was a small touch that add a lot to the character.

Good-Smurf903d ago

Marlowe was played by Rosalind Ayres.

MadLad903d ago (Edited 903d ago )

I have mixed feelings on the series. I still own all of them on the PS3, and the collection for PS4, but I didn't truly "love" any of the games until 4.

They're good games, but they always stumble on some element.
The first is good, but the climbing mechanics weren't exactly fine tuned with the first showing. Not to mention the spongey enemies if you played on anything past normal; but you're then faced with a fairly unchallenging game experience.
The second mostly fixed the climbing, but added in a pretty clumsy stealth mechanic.
Three was just two with a new story.

Four got it right though.
I don't remember once getting annoyed by any mechanic had in the game.

I know that everyone has a soft spot for 2, and 3 is sort of the black sheep of the series; but they did, overall, get progressively better. Which doesn't always happen.

UC 2, 4, 3 and 1. Great read and article

ABizzel11001d ago

No Golden Abyss -_-, otherwise I agree with the order.

UC2: Best overall
UC4: Best graphics, best gameplay, best locations, best environements
UC3: Best set pieces IMO (the boat and desert fights will always be amazing)
UC1: A rough Draft of what was to come
UCGA: Basically UC1 on Vita

Levii_921001d ago (Edited 1001d ago )

Great list and great article nicely writen and explained. Although for me personaly i would put Drakes Fortune above Drake’s Deception and Uncharted 4 is absolutely my favourite of the franchise and number 1 for me.

Inverno1001d ago

U2 is the only game playable on crushing without causing a great amount of frustration. Not to mention just how much influence it had that they redid some of U2s set pieces like the caravan twice, and armored truck chase in U4.

DFresh1001d ago (Edited 1001d ago )

I'd rate it as the following.

1.) Uncharted 2
(Close to perfection of any game I've played in years. Single Player/Multiplayer/Co Op all amazing.)

2.) Uncharted 3
(On par with UC2 multiplayer/co op wise minus the kickbacks [aka killstreaks]. I really liked the Lawrence of Arabia story.)

3.) Uncharted 4
(Single player is amazing. Multiplayer was meh. Co Op had potential. Absolutely hated the health revive system it slowed down the game way too much. Always preferred the fast pace action of UC2/UC3. Made it way more fun that way. Recoil was too ridiculous that most people in lobbies would only do hip firing, using power weapons and using that OP grappling hook to melee people after dropping them. Nobody wanted to revive anyone.)

4.) Uncharted
(It's the first in the series so it's hard to judge. Though I loved the story.)

NecrumOddBoy1001d ago

I agree here but it’s also a series you can play from front to back and truly enjoy. Story-wise, they are all great and flow so well. I wish they threw both Golden Abyss and Lost Legacy on this list. Lost Legacy is the best mechanically in my opinion. You can see it’s stepping stone framework for TLOUS2.

Michiel19891001d ago

uncharted 2 is one of the few games that actually surpassed its pre-release hype.

medman1001d ago (Edited 1001d ago )

I am a single player gamer...I barely ever touch a multiplayer component. The only exceptions over the years have been the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, TLOU factions, and the Uncharted 2 multiplayer. The Uncharted 2 multiplayer saw me spend more time playing it than all my other multiplayer experiences over the years combined. That game really was a masterpiece all around.

brando0081000d ago

I agree completely, those are all stellar MP experiences, coming from another SP gamer who only occasionally gives MP some time.

Gardenia1001d ago

Come to think of it, the step between Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2 is huge. It goes from the weakest in the series to one of the best games ever made.
I think I'm going to play all of them again soon.

Ninver1001d ago

Yeah all of a sudden I've got that Uncharted itch.

Michiel19891001d ago

is multiplayer still up for the remastered trilogy? or did it never have UC2 mp?

Ninver1001d ago

@michiel1989

Not sure
