Uncharted 3 sells 3.8 million units on day one

Sony’s confirmed this afternoon that Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception sold 3.8 million units in its first day alone.

The numbers was dropped in a very short press release sent out by SCEE. The figure is as recent as early as midnight today (November 10), and is currently “on a clear course to be the biggest selling game in the trilogy.” (PS3, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception)

Sony numbers are Sold to Retail means Shipped
VGchartz is an estimative from Retailers Sold to Consumers, we know the game Sold 125K in Japan and 116K in UK, only if it has done crazy in the USA because no Way it did that good in other European countries, UK is by far the biggest SW seller in Europe for Consoles.

So this is Shipped, Sold to Consumers is probably around the Milion Mark... Remember BF3 Shipped 10M and only Sold 5M in its 1st Week and those were EA Numbers not VgChartz.

Anyway i wish that game sell 100M if there´s game that deserve Cod type Sales this series (Uncharted) is one of them

This man speaks the truth. This isn't about being a fanboy or whatever but Sony is (almost) always talking about shipments when they say sold because that's what shipments mean to them; They sell them to retailers and get money.

Same goes for almost every company, except when they quote an offficial tracker (NPD, Media-Create etc.)
THILLREBORN  +   1476d ago
Actually you have it backwards MS does ship to retailer and nobody actually captures to customer because there is a variable of failed/defective products.
SoapShoes  +   1476d ago
Who cares? That 9.3 that COD sold was shipped numbers as well. The 5 million that Uncharted 2 sold was shipped. The 10 million GTA4 sold was shipped. Every official number is shipped so to single out Sony exclusives like they are the only ones that do it is just comedic. Why single out Uncharted but no one doubts COD saying it's shipped? Sure COD did very well but it was shipped numbers too.
#2.2.2 (Edited 1476d ago ) | Agree(51) | Disagree(6) | Report
PeZuS  +   1476d ago
The Cod numbers were not shipments. Estimates of the sales sold to customers for the first day by VGChartz.

@THILLREBORN: That's what I was saying, so how have I got it backwards?
SoapShoes  +   1476d ago
Ok then they weren't official numbers by Activision? I thought we got numbers by Activision? Well then that 9.3m isn't official and likely off. Regardless, what I say holds true. Every official number is shipped. Gears 3 doing 3 million was shipped. If it comes from a publisher it's shipped! No need to single out Sony and act like retailers are stupidly going to buy millions they don't need.
WrAiTh Sp3cTr3  +   1476d ago
Shipped numbers aren't as reliable as sale through numbers. If those stores bought 3.8 million they'll need to sell those copies or else they won't be buying 3.8 million when the sequel comes out, lol. Common sense...

Edit: Below, it sounds like you're more in favor of the money Sony got back instead of what the customers bought. In my opinion, actual sale through numbers are more stable and reliable. I guess these debates are from a perspective of where the individuals priorities lie.

SoapShoes  +   1476d ago
@Wraith - Wrong. Shipped are more reliable than sell through numbers because we have so many territories that are untrackable because they don't have companies like NPD that track numbers. Also, in case anyone forgot, these numbers INCLUDE games bundled for free with PS3s. It was heavily bundled so it doesn't seem too far fetched.
PeZuS  +   1476d ago
@Estranged: Read the last bit of my comment, I'm not singling Sony out: "Same goes for almost every company, except when they quote an offficial tracker (NPD, Media-Create etc.)"
Clarence  +   1476d ago
Wrong. Any Major company that makes a product, pays a contracting company to ship, and sell their product. Retail stores house the product. Retail stores would go out of business if they had to pay every company that uses them to get their product.

Why do you think that Gamestop makes so much money off used games.

To @estranged and anyone claiming the Gears numbers were "shipped":
They were actually not "shipped" and not "sold through". They're the number of people who actually logged to Xbox Live with a copy of Gears 3, so the actual number (assuming that at least some people who bought the game don't log in to live) is probably even higher.

From the Microsoft PR quote:
"...has driven more than three million unique users to log onto Xbox LIVE to play "Gears of War 3" since launch."

Shipped numbers are always higher than sold-through estimates, which are always higher than unique online logins. Just to put it in perspective, even a hardcore RPG like fallout 3 managed to ship 4.7 million units BEFORE launch day:
Prophet-Gamer  +   1476d ago
@humble opinion

But what does unique players means? I bought Gears 3 and counting myself about 4 people have used my copy and played online. So do those 4 people count as 1 unique person or 4? If 4 then obviously you can't say that 3 million unique users equals 3 million sold as we don't know how many of those 3 million users are sharing their copies. Unless you mean, they were online at the same time? I really don't know. Anyways, great job UC3,. 5-6 million lifetime, not so shabby.
sikbeta  +   1475d ago
I don't know what is Wrong with sell to retailers, you people do know Retailers buy the games to sell them to consumers, right? so, if they bought 3.8m it's because they're confident 3.8m consumers would buy the game and when the game is sold out or stuff retailers will ask more copies to Sony to sell them again and so on and it works like that with every game

Congrats Naughty Gods, you're the Best!
badz149  +   1475d ago
sold or shipped...I don't care
what important is, it SELLS! plus, retailers don't order 3.8mil copies to make sandwiches!

Fact is both MS and Sony does the same. And I had to go to 3 Kmarts and none of them had UC3 in stock.

so i am guessing it did sell extremely well.

Sony, MS and Nintendo as well as all other manufacturers sell to distributors what they ship so what ever is on the shelves at any best buy has already been sold from the shipper. Best Buy for example orders 500k copies and drop shipped to different locations in the US. They buy at a distributor price which could be around 50 percent off retail so in this case yes, these are always sold copies. I'm sure there is also an agreement that if stocked copies start slowing down they get a price protection allowing retailers to discount and get some credit from the manufacturer.
irepbtown  +   1476d ago
If Sony have clearly said 'Sold, not shipped' why are people doubting it?

I know Sony have been a bit confusing with this stuff but usually they dont directly say 'It is not shipped', they normally go on the sly.

So I'm believing Uncharted 3 sold 3.8 mill.
Just like I believe Black ops sold 7 mil day one (and no-one doubted that).

Boody-Bandit  +   1475d ago
You have entered the twilight zone where common sense does not apply. This is a land where facts are fiction and fairy tales are legend. Where spin is king and reality is a dirty word. They want to cling to the belief that shipped to retailers and sold to the consumer base actually means the devs and publishers didnt already make their bank.

Once the game is in the retailers hands? The publishers of said product have already made their profit. That is the reality of business, period.

Yeah "sold" to retailers. And so far there's no Sony press release. Do you believe it's 1.1 million in first week, or 3.8 million on first day? Uncharted 2 sold 5 millions TOTAL so how can U3 sell 3.8 million in one day, I don't believe it. And I do own a ps3 and have u3, just not a fanboy.
EcliPS3  +   1475d ago
Man, people really believe what they want to believe. Sigh. Wake up. Even though it may say "sold", that doesn't mean it was sold to "consumers", it means it was sold to "retailers". If retailers buy the game from Sony, that counts as "sold", not "shipped."

If 3.8m had been sold to consumers day one, there would not be any left on retail shelves. The game would be sold out. 3.8m relates to the number of units that were sold to the retailers so that in turn, those retailers could sell them to consumers throughout the holiday season.

As much as I loved Uncharted, it is not possible for them to account for every unit sold to a consumer on day one. It's also not possible that this game is as "mainstream" popular as a 2 war franchises that is sold across three platforms.

You can refer to the IGN article all day long, but that does not change the fact that the interpretation of "sold" is in reference to retailers.
EcliPS3  +   1475d ago

Nope, I was right. The number is in fact shipped(same as sold, but not the same as "consumer sales"). Sony has confirmed it with gaming news site Gamasutra.

[UPDATE:] Sony confirmed to Gamasutra that the figure given is shipped, rather than sold.

more game sales means more games and bigger budgets, which means we win.
Tanir  +   1476d ago
no one understands that shipped is sold. retailers buy from the producer, so the producer gets the money. if they retailers sell the copies they bought and the copies are depleted then the retailer buys more. if there is no demand then the producer cant sell anymore of them.

its basic marketing, seriously. great sales naughty dog
showtimefolks  +   1476d ago
To all the butt hurt fanboys Sony confirmed these are sold numbers. Gosh if gears 3 does well it's sold but when Sony actually advertises uncharted 3 and it does well you all want to question it

There is a world that exists outside the USA and a bigger one at that where Sony has a bigger install base and in some countries game is sell for more than 60 American dollars

Great for ND here is hoping this game gets to 6-8 million atleast

Pre-Orders sky rocket when people get $20 back or something worth having. ND didn't offer anything you couldn't get on your own.

Is it really that surprising that a follow up game that improves on every aspect of the best game released this generation would sell big?

Hate it all you want, but Uncharted is the face of the PS3.
Sevir04  +   1476d ago
Blaze take it in

The franchize on the first 2 games alone have sold 8 million tops 3 million for the first installment within the first 2 years of it's life and then The second sold 5 in the same time period! its not hard to see. Gears sells because its a great game, and great games with heavy marketing sell! Sony's been spending money marketing this game like crazy 1 month before it released and then the reviews came in so its not hard to see that a series which has garnered 8 million fans can sell 3.8 million on day one on one platform in its 3rd installment!

Fanboys really need to stop! and i'm not calling you a fanboy but the ranting over shipped versus sold is just stupid! Uncharted 3 sold well world wide! not just in the states or the UK/EU but world wide! so its not hard to believe! GT5 post these numbers as well as MGS4 and it wasn't from one region but WORLDWIDE! not hard to imagine!!!

Well, these numbers are "shipped to retailers," not "sold to customers."
Either way, Sony can say it sold 3.8 million units because, in reality, it has. Though, they have sold it to retailers and they get the money either way.
Take BF 3 for example. EA said they sold ~10 million units to retailers, but in reality, the game was sold to actual customers with ~5 million units.

but if retailers are buying it, sony has the money, so they are sold ! (and retailer don't buy thing they can't sold to consumer, so..)

The people claiming shipped not sold,EVEN if it is shipped, Sony ships games ON DEMAND,that means when the store runs out of copies they ask Sony to send more games because they're SOLD OUT.

Even ms does it,every company does it.There is no way to track all old games ONE BY ONE.That would take an unreasonable amount of effort and time.
