TGH Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One Review

TGH Writes: The unlikely pairing of a furry long eared bipedal alien, that somewhat resembles a lynx, and an almost pocket sized robot seems somewhat destined for disaster; however with the talents of Insomniac games, the developer who brought you Spyro the Dragon and Resistance 3, this duo have lasted across the PS2, PSP and are now entering their fourth PS3 title. Does this new entry live up to the high standards set by its predecessor?

definitely ain't playing it right! simply the most fun coop game out there hands down! and yeah...this is not a spin-off, it's a true R&C game which continues the story after Crack in Time! this is coop combined with competitive gameplay and it's a blast online and offline!

It is a fun game, but it doesn't have quite the same level of charm and enjoyability as previous R&C games. Puzzles are re-used to death and it really drains all the fun out of it. It IS good fun when played with others though, but as a solo experience it's just dry and not a patch on previous games. 3.5/5 isn't a low score, its an average score. A low score is something like 1-2/5 haha.

Glad to see you are enjoying the game though =]

"Puzzles are re-used to death and it really drains all the fun out of it"

how's that so? if you've been playing R&C games before, puzzles are always the same from beginning to end while they are becoming more challenging going further into the game. IMO they are special in All4One because it requires teamwork and lack of teamwork will halt progress especially during the laser wall section. this is a blend of competitive + cooperative at it's finest!

the thing about R&C puzzles are, they are different from game to game. no 2 R&C games use the same puzzle. we have been serve with laser puzzle, ball puzzle, switch puzzle, electric puzzle etc. throughout all R&C games so far.

I still think it's way better and more varied compared to Bioshock where it's always the same, damn boring flowing water puzzle for every hack from start to last. see? even a great game like Bioshock was designed based on 1 puzzle.

although I know that 3.5/5 is an average, not low score, IMO All4One is definitely NOT AVERAGE! have you played New SMB Wii? it's basically a classic Mario game played with 4 people and it doesn't even have online but because it's Mario, god forbid the low score! see the difference;

New SMB:

All4One:

All4one is actually scoring less while doing more, being fresher and more intuitive in presentation compared to a recycled old man Mario! c'mon are these reviewers blind or just dumb?

You can't compare A4O to Bioshock they are completely different games aimed at different audiences and they deal with different gameplay perimeters.
Personally I would have given NSMB an average score too as its not my cuppa tea, but in terms of gameplay you can't fault that thing. Nintendo crafted an excellent mix of level design and integrated co-op into it perfectly, its fun with or without friends to play it with, and when played with friends its got a competitive streak to it too. Again its different to what R&C offered.
In terms of A40's puzzles, they are rehased to the point of exhaustion. A laser puzzle is good when you first do it, but then to create an entire world that revolves around that mechanic only makes it the uniqueness of the puzzle dissipate and become something that is easily overcome - thus no longer providing the puzzle solving reward. Many R&C games don't have the same puzzles in because the gadgets are different, but may R&C games also don't throw the same conundrum at you over and over again within a short space of time.
As the review mentioned the game is fun with others to play with, but alone it is really rather average and doesn't hold a flame to what previous R&C games could do. The fact that you HAVE to have a companion with you even in solo mode means that it is controlled by the AI which not only makes the co-operative puzzles irritating as you know exactly how to solve them (as lets be frank none of them are mind meltingly hard) but the AI just wont co-operate.
The other reviews aren't being prejudice to R&CA4O over other co-op games (like NSMB like you suggest) they are just seeing the game at what its worth, like any games reviewer would. It's a lot of fun when played with like minded others, but alone it's just a dry experience, to have truly been a great R&C entry like the rest of the games it would have needed to have had a much stronger sense of single player to it and also really done something more with its levelling system; as it stands it sits there to just tantalise people into thinking there is some customisation tree for the character when there is not.

but the focus of A4O is coop and the game are designed to be played in coop. personally I think it's good to have something fresh from the franchise that many haters are calling "more of the same" and still maintaining the charm of the series. but now seems like reviewers are like knocking it down for not being "more of the same" and I think you do too!

it's a coop focus game, so shouldn't it be praised if it plays good enough in coop? I don't see much value in coop games like Borderland for example where it's basically an SP game played by 2 players. I can easily hook up with a higher level partner and let him do the rest while I sit there doing nothing but still get all the loots, XP and trophies! why would anybody wants it to play like the usual R&C games? imagine a multiplayer FPS game but with bots only! THAT wouldn't be as much fun now isn't it? what I want to say here is, the game should be played and reviewed as what it intends to do and with A4O, it's coop!
