Sequels: Scourge or Savior?

Sequels are a topic that is often debated among gamers. Some people say that they allow you to continue playing as your favorite characters, or in your favorite multiplayer game, years after the original has come out. Games like the Final Fantasy series have upwards of twenty games or more out, and are in fact so old that they’re beginning to remake the first few games in the series because an entirely new generation is coming into gaming at this point. Most series have between two and eight games, and several titles are cropping up this year with numbers in their title; Call of Duty (8) Modern Warfare 3, Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3, Uncharted 3, and Mass Effect 3 early next year. And those are just the threes.

They allow a company to predict sales and make a game with less effort than making a new game.

Of course this means we get less new IPs.
