Has Call of Duty Driven Hundreds of Teens into Military Service?

In today's installment of Speak Up on Kotaku, commenter Tony Danza suggests the Call of Duty series from Activision is responsible for countless teenagers deciding to join the military and be all that they could be in the games.

The story is too old to be commented.

Ha! Anything is possible. I knew lots of people who joined the Navy because of Top Gun. I admit I was influenced to join because of movies and such. But I don't regret it. It was a great experience and I visited many countries I wouldn't have seen otherwise and met lots of nice and interesting people. Japanese people were the coolest of the bunch IMO :) Also, what a cool looking country that was. I just hope these people who join because of COD don't expect it to be anything like THAT video game lol. They will be in for a shock. I would laugh trying to see someone qualify on the rifle range by trying to quick scope.

I think it has an influence but the main factor people join the military is actually war. UK recruitment shows that the highest recruitment is actually during a time of conflict and recruitment drastically drops during peace time

fluffydelusions2231d ago

I think it depends on the conflict. Like the current ones are totally ridiculous. I don't know who would want to sign up for that.

I didn't join up the USMC because of the games. I knew it wouldn't be anything like it. The actual job is actually really crappy. Most people hate it and are just waiting for their term to be over. The main perk(pun intended) is that you get looked differently in a positive way when you're off duty. You get more respect, people admire you, people think you're dependable and that they can trust you, and pursuing girls is easier.

I rather play BF3 and MW3 all day than shoot a real gun. In the games I can run, jump, shoot, and spin-around. In real life there's a bunch of rules and bullshit things happen.

they should tell the kids their is no respawn, and K/D must be 100%

@John Madden

"Persuing Girls is Easier"

That would probably be the most effective military recruitment marketing campaign ever. lol

Kind of sad actually. Teen kills 3 people and says, "My k/d is 3!!!"

Lavitz20122231d ago

Great so now are army is going to be filled with retards trying to do 360 no scopes??

The Meerkat2231d ago (Edited 2231d ago )

I've played Halo for years.
If I could sign up for the UNSC I'd do it today.

But f### this modern war nonsense.
I want to fight to defend the planet, not so that americans can pay $2 for a gallon of gas.
