They just can't seem to make a FPS campaign that everyone likes. Why is every shooter campaign labeled as "meh" or "lame?"

Why is every shooter campaign labeled as "meh" or "lame?"

Have you heard of Bioshock? That is an FPS. And it was amazing.

And yet it wasn't anywhere near as good as the game that inspired it, System Shock 2, a sort of FPS.

All the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games have good to excellent campaigns.

I dont think this article is talking about SP FPS games, probably all these multiplayer ones.

So Id say there are 2 reasons:

1) Many of these FPS are mainly online games so the developers simply tack on a short and cheap campaign just to say they have one and it ends up not being very good.

2) Many of the people who buy these games only want or like multiplayer FPS, so when they try the SP they find it "lame" or "boring" because its not the same as playing online.

I think even if a multiplayer shooter comes out with a good campaign many would still call it lame or just not even try it because most of the people buying these games only got it for the multiplayer.

Me, FPS are my favorite types of games, specifically single player FPS. I find that almost all of the good SP FPS campaigns dont come with multiplayer of any kind. There are exceptions, but finding a FPS that has an amazing SP and Multiplayer is pretty rare. Always has been, always will be.

even my favorite game ever half-life 1 that had an amazing SP game had crappy multiplayer until moders created awesome multiplayer for it such as counter strike and day of defeat.

A few examples of a FPS total package with great multi and Single player would be Halo 1, Goldeneye, Quake 1/2, Perfect dark, Dark forces 3: jedi knight 2: jedi outcast, and Im sure there are a few others.

I agree with the author that people like to scrutinize shooters alot, but at the same time I think that is offset by reviewers being more willing to give FPS good reviews. I feel its much harder for a developer to get a bunch of 9+ reviews in any other genre than in the FPS one.

At the end of the day most shooters with multiplayer have a not very good SP. Lets just say that When Im looking to play an AWESOME single player campaign in my favorite type of game since I was 7 in 1993, Im looking to ones without multiplayer first usually(or atleat not ones that seem to push the multiplayer the most).

Quake is a really good example of an FPS that appeals to both the multi and singleplayer crowd, because the core gameplay is so well realised.

Jedi Outcast an FPS, though? Yeah, you could play it that way, but that's not why the game is classic.

Yeah stop complaining. Just let the developers do what ever the crap they want

Good article, with a good point. Almost every major game has a pretty decent campaign, really. The media makes a living out of nitpicking them all to death.

I'm not sure if that's better or worse than having review after review of "Another good campaign. Another great game. Games are just too awesome these days. Blah blah blah."

Ironically, games ARE that good these days, and almost everything negative any review has to say about one could be qualified as nitpicking.

In a sense, game reviews suffer from the same kind of "curved" grading system the US public education system suffers from. It's completely comparative, and even though the differences between an "A" student and a "B" student are miniscule in reality, they don't LOOK that way on paper, due to the comparative grading mechanics. You could even argue that "A" games, just like "A" students, are merely able to "play the system" better than their "B" counterparts, rather than truly being better students/games.

gamers are babies...they think COD campaign is good. That sort of standard has ruined sp. Games that are single player only, bioshock, dragon age: ORIGINS, Deus Ex: Human revoluton, dead space 1, mass effect 1 and 2, witcher 2 are just a few exampled of amazing sp games. Gamers need to stop whining when the sp such as the above, dont have mp in it, cause if its proven that one element can ruin a game, is the addition to mp and the amount of attention devs rather give to mp than sp. Dead space 2, assassins creed and now mass effect have mp in it, and their story lines have suffered from it. All to appeal the console noob masses.Battlefield 3 sp wasnt that bad either. The notion of no MP = no buy is completely retarded. I rather pay 60 bucks for deus ex than mw3 or bf3. Same with bioshock.
