Sony Releases Black Friday Sales Statistics

Sony Computer Entertainment America has released statistics pointing to an upswing in sales over the Black Friday period in North America -- centered around the notorious retail rush that takes place the day after the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S.

We had about the same amount of xbox elite's as we did Ps3's. We got a full shipment of both. We had 11 Ps3's as of Sunday night and we had roughly the same for the xbox 360. We're a high, high volume store, though. We're in one of the richest areas of Cali, so it's not uncommon for us to sell alot of units of either system, actually. I can say this... We didn't sell near as many Wii's as we did Ps3 or Xbox 360's... Call it lack of shipment or whatever, it still goes to show you that the Ps3 and the elite are selling in spite of the wii's lack of availability.

According to Sony, PlayStation 3 sales have increased by 245% compared to last year's Black Friday sales. Further, Since November 2nd, PS3 hardware sales have increased by 298% -- which includes both the 80GB and new 40GB models.
If true(probably not) because they sold 20000 on launch date which was (7 days before black friday) it means that they sold around a 500,000. Which I highly doubt.

Black Friday for last years was over shadowed by the PS3 launch. By the time B/F hit last year the surge of PS3's sold were tapering off due to the launch. With that being said, saying sells increased by 245% since last B/F doesn't really tell us anything.

What it does do, is give Sony a tricky way of hyping the sells of the PS3. If they really wanted to impress, why didn't they just release the actual number of units sold. Additionally, we have yearned for sony to release sells data for a long time, suddenly they release B/F sells results just three days later. This is a marketing ploy to sell more units.

By no means am I trying to bash Sony or anything, it just seems pretty obvious to me why they releases these figures. If you want to call percentages of unknown numbers "figures".

Many places hav ePs3's cause Sony makes enough of them and doesn't try to cause a spike by saying they can't make enough of them. Sony also makes a quality machine in the ps3 and doesn't have to worry about manufacturing cost due to defective units. "cough" Competition "cough" Sony will have done very well this week and month... Maye not as well as the xbox 360 or wii in America, but it will definitely do better in Japan and Europe as a whole than either the wii or xbox 360. Bank it. As I said, we sold thru 52 ps3's in a day at my store... That's amazingly fast, believe me.

I saw a story yesterday where Nintendo is saying they aren't making less Wiis than they can to get hype. Right Nintendo. If it isn't artificial then what's the excuse for the shortage of Wiis? Hi there i know its off topic but this amazing patch has totally transformed the best f1 game to ever come out on a console, now the game is so much better you can feel every bump and the force feedback has to be the best i have ever experianced.

I live in the UK and dont know if this patch is worldwide or not. Note this has nothing to do with the mirror patch and i can see no options to connect the psp as a wing mirror.

Just load the game up and it will tell you version 1.10 is ready to download, click on yes and enjoy the game, good time to buy a logitech wheel for your ps3. I have a driving force EX wheel and its perfect.

Stats are easy to manipulate but auditors can make fortunes through finding mistakes so chances are if there is inconsistencies in data, an auditor is looking for it.

How well Sony does is relative to how well the wii and the xbox 360 do... if Microsoft and Nintendo were able to sell 3-5 times the amount of consoles Sony is selling... they the PS3 is on they same boat or even worst... the ps3 might not be outselling the 360 in america just yet. but it is in europe and japan.

also you have to remember that the microsoft is selling about 50,000 a week more then sony right now BUT there still riding on halo.

so this is expected. if sony can at least sell even with the 360 in america or get close it will outsell the 360 by about 5 to 6 million next year. how you ask?
because since the ps3 outsells the 360 in europe by about 15 to 20,000 a week, then the 360 is getting outsold by the ps3 by more then 60,000 units a month in europe. now the 360 is outselling the ps3 in america by about 150,000 units a month at this point. but if the ps3 can continue to outsell in europe and get close in america, those 2 places alone the ps3 will probably only be selling even with the 360.

So, the October NPDs were not exactly great for the PS3, but Sony was quick to announce, via mainstream media press outlets that things were looking WAY up for their struggling next-gen console. They quoted sales numbers that were actually a decrease for the first week of November and sales numbers the second week of November that were less than lackluster. This has been heavily discussed in other threads, so if it interests you just do a search and you will find it all.

But now that Black Friday is behind us, Sony is up to their old tricks again. Here's their official announcement:

"Today, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced that overall PlayStation brand unit sales during the week including Black Friday increased by 178%, sales dollars increased by 154%.
Below are the sales figures for each PlayStation platform for the week including Black Friday for the top 10 retailers in North America:
PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) hardware sales increased by 245% when compared to Black Friday sales last year.
Since November 2nd, and the availability of both the 40GB and 80GB PS3 models, PS3 hardware sales have increased by 298%.
PSP® (PlayStation® Portable) hardware sales increased by 136% when compared to previous week sales.
PlayStation®2 (PS2) hardware sales increased by 287% when compared to previous week sales."

The key point of focus here is not the PlayStation brand overall, nor is it Black Friday of last year compared to this year. The key point of focus is the PS3 hardware sales being up by 298% since November 2nd and the availability of the 40gb SKU. What is interesting is they don't give a comparison reference point. So let's work up some reasonable ones on our own, we know math right?

First comparison, PS3 sales of October. In October, the PS3 sold 121,000 units, which averages out to 30,250 per week. If they increased by 298% from last month they would have a total of 360,580 units sold for a weekly average of 90,145. For the month of November, this is a very, very low number of consoles to sell. Heck, the 360 sold 366,000 in October. So if Sony is comparing the sales of the PS3 last month to this month, an increase of 298% is nothing to write home about.

Before we continue our comparisons, here's a little reality check. How did the 360 do it's first full November a year after its launch? Well, they sold 511,000 units.

Okay, back to comparing the PS3 to itself. Since it launched the PS3 has averaged 165,000 units sold per month. If this is increased 298% it would mean that this month they have sold 491,700 units. This is a pretty lackluster figure as well, but admittedly not as bad as a paltry 360,000 units. Still, the PS2, a year after it launched, in November of 2001 sold 920,000 units. The worst November the PS2 has ever had was in November of 2005 when it sold 530,000 units. So, if Sony is comparing the average monthly sales to get their 298% increase, I still don't see what they are bragging about.

Reality check number 2. Last November Sony launched in the middle of the month and had supply issues and managed to sell 197,000 units. In December, with more supply trickling in and having an entire month to sell the system and it being December, which is the best month of the year to sell a console, Sony managed to sell 491,000 units. So, if Sony increased their overall monthly sales by 298% they will have sold 491,700 units and last December they sold that many. Not much of an increase is it?

Best case scenario comparison. If Sony took its best month ever in terms of PS3 sales and increase it by 298%, how much would that be? Well, last December was the PS3's best ever, they sold 491,000 consoles and an increase of 298% would be 1,463,000 units. That would be truly amazing and would definitely be something worth bragging about, however, it is completely unrealistic. That would mean in on month they would have sold almost as many consoles as they sold in the entire previous year. For November, that is just ridiculous. Nothing even close to that has ever been done from the PS2 forward.

Once again, if we analyze the numbers behind Sony's PR announcements, they are hard to figure out. Why is Sony bragging about doing so poorly? Why is Sony bragging about sales being up in the holiday season? Why is Sony doing this? It is one thing to lie about stuff that you can't prove either way, but when you use sales figures and numbers we can use those to prove what they are saying one way or the other. Now, I am no way saying that this preliminary analysis that I have done here provides such proof. That won't be possible until the NPD numbers come in next month, but at least this does serve as a reference point for reality vs. PR.
Edit: Just for fun, let's put their Black Friday claims to the test as well. Last year, Sony sold 197,000 systems in all of November. Just for the sake of argument, let's just say they sold them ALL on Black Friday. Sony claims that this year they sold 245% more on Black Friday than last year. That would mean that they sold 482,650 on Black Friday alone. However, if this were the case then their other figures of increasing sales by 298% are way too low, considering their previous announcements regarding the first and second week of November sales increases. Any way you slice it, Sony is up to no good here and is trying to convince everyone that the PS3 is now, all of the sudden, thriving. Nothing could be further from the truth in my opinion and I can't wait for the NPDs to feel vindicated. Of course if I am wrong, I will find a way to cope.

In Mediiamarkt all 399 were sold out too. Xbox and wii were still there.

It doesn't really matter who wins what. Compared to Dreamcast or 3DO, the PS3 sells in a number which justifies a market - something which these two never did. So who cares. PS3 is healthy, even if some people deny that. I am personally impressed with the European numbers, though. A 7 month LTD product is on par (HW & SW) with a 2+ year product. The PS3 might never win the USA, but it will just be enough to create the biggest global market - eventually (and Sony makes 50% more revenue (money wise) everywhere else then the US right now).

sales is the drive in the industry. it can make or break the future. when sony opted to get a 40gb unit out there, is was because of the sales that 360's 20gb unit has brought. now that they have a direct competitor to each sku, they're hoping that some of the demand will shift from one console to the other. sony has a lot to gain from this, but the thing is that they should've gotten all this work done at launch. they probably would've gained more mommentum and wouldn't be so far behind.

and to make that demand shift, they've got to give us reasons WHY to buy. before launch, it were those "tech demos" that brought the demand. now they have to deliver. coming from a 360 owner, when Sony delivers it can blow away the competition. but i'm not too worried either way. i have my games to keep me happy, because MS has delivered very well so far.

when that sony exec Tretton said he will pay you 1200 bucks if you can find a ps3 in stock, I think it was last January, and ps3's were stacked up on shelves everywhere, just like they are now, yes I would imagine sales are increasing, just like sales for most everything increases around this holiday time period, but I see a helluva lot of stacks of ps3's and game store employees in my area say sales are up slightly but wii's sell out quickly and 360 sales are much better than ps3 sales, especially the Elites and apparantly demand is very low for the 40gig ps3. NPD numbers should be interesting.
