Rockstar rails against BBFC

Rockstar today launched its appeal against the BBFC's decision to refuse Manhunt 2 certification, accusing the board of putting its reputation above the interests of gamers.

Geoffrey Robertson, representing Rockstar, began the proceedings by claiming the British Board of Film Classification was a misnomer - suggesting it should instead be referred to as the British Board of Videogame Censors.

I am so glad rockstar have been denied. They are a bunch of two faced degenerate whingers and I am sincerely happy that the people at the BBFC have done a good and responsble thing. It seems they havent given up on society yet.

There is currently a consultation seeking views on risks to children in relation to the internet, games and new (mobile) technologies in the UK. The debate is coming our way whether we want it or not.

Rockstar's comments will certainly not help them. Accusing the BBFC board of putting its reputation above the interests of gamers is just silly. Suggesting the BBFC should instead be referred to as the British Board of Videogame Censors is equally daft. Rockstar need to be (and need to be seen to be) taking the BBFC seriously. They're behaviour can impact on the ratings of other games - GTA for example. There is a lot to learn on both sides - gamers and regulators. All that is required is for games to be given ratings that are effectively enforced. Parents/carers need to be educated about the changing landscape of games. Games are now far more realistic than they used to be. I was blown away (no pun intended) by COD4. I can see the unease with which Governments might view, what they might see as an 'irresponsible' gaming industry.

If anyone wants to respond to the consultation - it's call the Byron Review. Drop them an email...
