Microsoft to Release Xbox 360 with Built-In HD DVD Drive?

These old rumors that was shotdown by MS a while back sprung to life again today when Digi-Times reported that Microsoft is selecting manufacturers in Taiwan to provide an internal HD DVD drive that will be used in a forthcoming Xbox 360 edition designed to compete with Sony's PlayStation 3.

"Microsoft will offer an external HD-DVD drive for its Xbox 360 at around the end of this year, in an attempt to compete with the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3), which will have a built-in Blu-ray Disc (BD) drive, the sources indicated. The external HD-DVD drive, however, can only play back movies, the sources noted."

i thought the 360 was already supposed to be capable of competing with the PS3? oh well, just as long as their version of hd-dvd isn't for games then i'm good...i have enough to worry about Sony forcing me to buy a blu-ray dvd player, i don't need Microsoft doing it too. but on second thought; why would they make it internal if it wasn't intended to be used for games...in the future?

This was one of the few reasons why I was going to buy a regular stand alone HD DVD player, but now that there will be an internal HD DVD 360 I will definitely be on it.

I use my "DVD" player to watch movies. Plus watching movies on your console just adds alot more wear and tear to the unit.

I am with you 110%

More wear and tear on your console you don't need. I have always bought STAND ALONE players. I bought my console to ..... get this ..... PLAY GAMES !!

That is why I think MS for giving me the option on a HD player rather than force me to buy one.

As long as people can still buy a 360 without a HD-DVD drive built in.

For god sake, this is a RUMOR! This would go agaisnt the whole Microsoft ideology! Microsoft don't like forcing things down people's throats, it's the whole reason they say to buy a 360 over a PS3 because it offers CHOICE. If the 360 loses this key element to what defines its greatness, then it has absolutely nothing over the PS3!
