Sonic the Hedgehog was Sega’s key character to compete with Nintendo’s Super Mario. Sonic went through many changes while he was being developed. At one point he was a Rabbit who would use its extendable ears to collect objects. The idea was trashed, but re-imagined in the game Ristar. Soon Naoto Ōshima’s creation of a spiky teal hedgehog, codenamed “Mr. Needlemouse” was chosen to be the new mascot of Sega.
