Analysts have predicted similar overall sales numbers for both, but MW3 has the current edge. Can GTAV end up selling more in the long run?
It will outsell the CoD of the year it comes out in
Doubt it. I don't think the GTA franchise has the allure it once had. GTA4 left a bad taste in peoples mouths as well. COD on the other hand, regardless of what certain people on the Internet think of it, sells more and more each year.
Well it's tough to tell right now. As more information gets released about GTA5 people will either get more interested in the game or lose interest. If I had to judge right now I'd say GTA5 wouldn't outsell it seeing how people hated GTA4 so much that they are now praising the Saints Row series... and of course MW3 will more than likely shatter sales records if history repeats itself.
GTA4 has now sold just over 22 million copies. Even if GTA5 sells half of that it will be at the 11 million units sold mark, which is colossal in its own right. And mark my words GTA5 will sell more than 11 million in its lifetime.
@logicwins so did mw2 but im most likely buying mw3
It is a tough one. It has been a while since GTA 4 came out and a lot has changed. GTA 4 was critically acclaimed at the time but it didn't age well. GTA 4 came off the back of Vice city and San Andreas. GTA 4 was the down to earth, realistic GTA. Totally different from previous instalments which made them popular. The DLC for GTA 4 got 8-9s. Looking around 1UP did a article about how the DLC sold less than expected. I think Rockstar need to show us how the GTA franchise has evolved because a lot has changed since 2008.
Just look at what Rockstar did with RDR & especially Undead Nightmare, and you know that Rockstar still have got what it takes to make a great open world game. GTA5 will be an amalgamation of GTA4's gameplay & storytelling mixed together with GTA San Andreas's all round zaniness & free roaming abilities. Throw in animals, planes & Bigfoot, and we are gonna have one hell of a game!
if there is one game that will outsell cod right now it is the one and only gta
Or wii sports.
Wii sports sold that well because it was bundled with the console.
I don't care if it does or not. I just want the game. Big fan of GTA :)
I don't think it will sell better than MW3, but in the end it doesn't matter. GTAV doesn't come out this year. When GTAV comes out next year along side the next COD then we can have this conversation and say which one we think will sell better than the other. Since GTAV is going back to San Andreas days, GTAV will sell very well when it comes out.
Not a chance. Black Ops did 7 million units worldwide in the first 24 hours. GTAIV did 3.6 million units. Both are pretty good numbers for first day sales but you can see the difference it's almost twice as much. Take into account that the PS3 user base back then(2008) was no where near the current number so things might get better as far as GTA sales are concerned but to beat COD, that would be a bit of a challenge. But yea like you said, if there is one game capable of surpassing COD sales on day 1, it would be a GTA game otherwise forget it.
You also have to take into consideration how many consoles were in peoples homes when both games came out and the time of the year when they came out. Not only the user base on the PS3, but the user base on the 360. Also remember that blacks Ops came out on 5 different consoles and not just 2 on its release day.
sales were mostly from PS3 and Xbox 360.
GTA IV also released in April, not during November unlike every COD.
Does it really matter?
I think its possible. Grand Theft sells 10-15 million copies per edition. If the advertise it; it'll sell.
I predict: 1- MW3 = 25-30 million 2- GTA V = 23-28 million but i hope GTA sells more i'm a HUGE Gta fan
Can we at least wait until MW3 comes out before we start asking if it'll be outsold by a game that just got announced? Can we get a week's worth of numbers first?
mw3 has the potential to sell much more than people can even expect for several reasons
Sorry i can't see any other reasons, it's a popular twitch shooter that spend more in advertising than most studios have budgets for their games. And runs at 60 fps thats it's good points, everything else judging by past cods will be negatives.
both franchises will break records in the genre they are part of
