Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception review (HonestGamers)

Tom Chick writes: "Uncharted 3 is mostly filler without gameplay. It's the modern equivalent of those full motion video games folks made back in the 90s when new CD-ROMs afforded all that storage space. So developers shot video footage, grafted it onto various games (usually puzzle collections), and a genre was born. Who cares whether there was an actual game in there?"

Too late, the game already had a troll review for hits.

xPhearR3dx4558d ago

You're saying it's impossible to hate Uncharted 3?

PirateThom4558d ago

Yes... actually, it's fundamentally everything that is good about gaming.

mandf4558d ago (Edited 4558d ago )

Yes!! An objective reviewer can see that it's a game that excels in all areas. A 4 says it's a below average game. Which it's clearly not. Anyone can review a game but journalism has to have standards and ethics. Gaming journalism is not to that point yet. You can defend it all you want but going against the grain of reviewers as a whole makes the reviewer look petty and childish. Anyone can type on the internet, it doesn't make the site legit or credible. Stop sticking up for people that have no ethics. The game industry evolves so should reviews. I don't like Bioshock at all but doesn't make it a bad game. A score of 4 is a bad game and unplayable.

perfectCarbonara4558d ago (Edited 4558d ago )

Ya know what ? YES !!!

Yes it is impossible to HATE Uncharted if you like games.

You can say it's not all that, or just not your cup of tea but to say you HATE it !

It would mean you hate every single element that makes the game.

And yes my friend, that is impossible.

(lol @ the disagrees)

xPhearR3dx4558d ago (Edited 4558d ago )

So basically you're all in denial and can't accept the fact that someone else in this world of BILLIONS of people, hates a game you love. I personally know 3 people that HATE, yes downright HATE Uncharted. I've played the first two. Hate the characters, hate the story, hate the multiplayer, hate the gameplay and so on. So no it's not impossible. You're just caught up in your own twisted little fantasy where Uncharted is a god send to gamers and if someone says they hate it, they're either A. Lying. B Never Played It. C. Trolling.

@Ressurection

Maybe he is hating on purpose, or maybe he isn't. That's what's funny about the internet. When people see something they don't like, they resort to their own made up conclusions and don't stop to think for one second, maybe that person really does hate what they're talking about. That's not restricted to just video games either, that's movies, music, books, etc. People just don't like hearing someone else hates something they love.

4558d ago
mandf4558d ago (Edited 4558d ago )

@ xPhearR3dx

The problem is if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it unless you want to suffer the consequence. To review a game and put it in negative light just to go against the grain is asking for ridicule.

On the internet people go to fan sites just to tick people off. Then they claim to have a right to an opinion. When you open up with negativity you think your right is more important than theirs. If they stand up for there belief their just an upset fanboy. Love to see how you and other negative people treat their family and friends. Just like on this site if an article is about Uncharted and you go and post a negative comment you went looking for a response. Usually not the one you want. If the page is full of people that love something you went there, they didn't ask you to come and ridicule it. So don't get upset when others respond. Your parents teach you that when you're 3. Cause and effect.

Edit by the way people always hate and try to justify it by saying they played when we all know people make up stuff on the internet all the time. Some have played most haven't. For someone that hates Uncharted so much you love to read and talk about it.

Heartnet4558d ago (Edited 4558d ago )

But dude reviews arnt all about opinion.. u have to judge a game based on the quality of the game and if it will appeal to others..

A whole point of a review is to inform us.. not tell me of his opinion of the game lol.... The graphics alone give it a 4! and the story.. if previous games are to go by.. boosts it up to atleasy a 7 then the rest is gameplay which is solid so.

wsoutlaw874558d ago (Edited 4558d ago )

the point of the matter is not if its possible to hate the game but, that even if you hate a game for what ever reason a real journalist has the ability to write a professional review and would not give a game with very little real flaws a 4. A review is not "scale of 1 to 10 how cool i think this game is." Not to mention the overall tone and the nonsense comparisons. The whole thing was whiny like the game did something to him and he couldn't mention anything good with out also adding something bad. He chose to forgo real journalism to over react and complain , and I think we all know why.

NukaCola4557d ago (Edited 4557d ago )

Nitpicking and harsh critiquing can't even justify a 4/10. That is the equivalant of every aspect of this game being a failure. Everything about this review is a blantant lie and although it doesn't read as poorly as AV Club's, it's clear that the guy who wrote this has such a biased immature hatred, that he used no ethics in his mediocre review.

God, are you people reading this? This is a horrible review.

CONS according to HonestGamer:

Sully is too old to be able to climb.

Drake shouldn't be able to kill 20 poeple in one scene.

Drake's fighting is bargain bin compared to Batman.

The game is the same as a QTE motion arcade game from the 80s.

It has setpieces.

When hanging and shooting.) It's exacly like Dark Void which you never played.

There is apparently no exploration (I guess the hidden areas and treasures arent in the game..lol fail review)

Elena can come with you now. Which is bad because she should just wait for you to climb around and unlock the door. (WTF How is her coming with you bad?)

Naughty Dog doesn't care about the game, so HG shouldn't care either.

Only 4 chapters don't suck.

Game's all filler, no content, bad.

I can't believe I read that. There is not one thing that feels legit as a con, it's pulling out of it's own butt. I was looking for the "Pistols kill people just like sniper rifles...both do the same thing? How Paste and Copy.."

ipe4557d ago

So u hate everything about it?? Sorry cant accept that. This is pure trolling in finest form.
To me oblivion was overrated, gta 4 was overrated, especially arkham asylum, but ey are still good games which did a lot of things right.
But 4/10? gtfo

Information Minister4557d ago (Edited 4557d ago )

Great! Another fanboy submitting his own rants on N4G.

A 4 is the kind of score you give to a game with broken gameplay, poor graphics and sound, no replay value and borderline unplayable. You only have to play the game for 2 minutes to realize U3 suffers from none of those. This "review" and the one by The AV Club only strengthen the theory that some of the media is biased against Sony.

@ xPhearR3dx: I hated Red Dead Redemption. That doesn't mean I would give it a score of 4/10, ignoring what the game does right and its technical achievements. Because I know that someone might enjoy the aspects that I actualy hated about the game. This guy might even believe his Uncharted 3 review is honest, but it sure as hell isn't professional.

Story quality - "WTF?"
Like this website - "No".

i 'm being honest there, honestgamer.com.

Christopher4557d ago

The problem with a 4/10 is that it implies that it is broken in some way and needs some major fixes. You may not like how Uncharted plays out, you may not like the characters, but even then, the game plays well, the gameplay is not broken even if you don't like it, and the game is not bug ridden like many other titles that Tom Chick has scored high in the past.

NeloAnjelo4557d ago

@ xPhearR3dx

Play it and see for yourself.

darthv724557d ago (Edited 4557d ago )

that people will hate on something to break the normal cycle. Its like, if everything was perfect then there would be no conflict. Yet its human nature to gravitate towards conflict as a means to express ones personal opinion of the situation.

This score could be valid from this persons perspective yet it is the vocal majority of uncharted fans that will see fit to say he is wrong. What they dont realize it that it doesnt matter to him if he is wrong. He got people to fuss and comment and interact with such a situation as simple as saying....he didnt like it.

The game does not deserve this score but it got this score more than likely on the view that he just didnt like it. Why else would over 112 (myself included and counting) try to come in here and either convince him otherwise or take his side? Practically every major game has seen controversy from those with no real desire to play it. Then you have the retaliatory position of the opposition to say otherwise.

Journalism has no standards anymore. Anyone can be a reviewer so long as they have a way of presenting their review as being the one to read. There are a multitude of 9 and 10 reviews that get hardly any notice. Its easier to be the bad guy than fit into the crowd.

I made a point to say when the whole eurogamer thing happened that there will be other scores that will be lower and yet might not get the attention as much as that first "8" did. I was wrong. It looks like a 4 can be just as alerting.

The guys not even funny. Reading his blog just now, he just sounds like a pretentious hater who really, doesn't like videogames as much as he makes out and just hates on whats popular just to make some benial statement.

TBM4558d ago

isn't this the same fool who writes for the syfy network? anyway i hahahahahaha at this waste of time review. 4/10 please get of here with that hahahaha.

humbleopinion4553d ago

Tom Chick is not just a legend, but also a prophet. He even knew in advance that this ridiculous conversation right here in N4G is going to happen (and how badly it reflects on the sad state of some people involved):

"I do wish the reaction was to wonder *why* I didn’t like Deus Ex. it’s often just shorthand to dismiss something else I’ve written. “Oh, he didn’t like Mass Effect 2? Well, he didn’t like Deus Ex either!” That’s just lazy and it ultimately hurts the level of discourse when we talk about videogames. "

Cyrax_874558d ago

I read the the review and he complains because you can't do certain things like you can in Tomb Raider.

News flash: This isn't Tomb Raider, nor is it trying to be.

E2M4558d ago

Analyzing 'Uncharted: Drake’s Deception' – Wait, What is The Game About?

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception has a lot to live up to as Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is an incredible and near-perfect game.

UNCHARTED2FANATIC903d ago (Edited 903d ago )

I cant even say what the point was its easily the worst story in the series. The online was a whole lot of fun though but overall doesn't come even close to 2

porkChop903d ago (Edited 903d ago )

It was a step back for sure. Personally, I thought even the MP was way better in U2. Solid game, glad I played it. I just think they didn't push as hard as they did with U2.

UNCHARTED2FANATIC899d ago

Yes both the online and story was better in 2 no doubt

Flewid638903d ago

The "young Drake" portion was pretty top notch, story-wise. But yeah, everything outside of that I felt was inferior.

DanielEndurance903d ago

Villains were all over the place in this… one second they wanted Drake dead, the next they needed him, then they want him dead again, then they coulda killed him, but poisoned his friend instead, then coulda shot him again, but had brunch with him, then needed him alive, then coulda mowed him down, but decided to kill him by fire and let him escape… Uncharted 2 was way better. 😅😅

slowgamer903d ago

=D Sounds crazy. I don't remember any of that. Played it on ps3 and I remember thinking that why was this game so bashed compared to second one. I liked it.

Chocoburger903d ago (Edited 903d ago )

Another thing that annoyed me about UC3 events was the agent Talbot teleporting around Turkey. It just felt off to me, and made no sense.

Also, for about one third of the game, you go on a wild goose chase to rescue Sully, who wasn't even there to be rescued, and you end up back where you started again. There was simply no pay off for all the events you go through, so it fell flat in that regard as if they couldn't figure out how to make the game longer, so they decided to side-track you to do something with no pay off, hoping you wouldn't notice due to all the incredible action set pieces they made.

Overall though, even with its flaws, I still enjoy the game.

TheEnigma313903d ago

This was actually my least favorite in the series. Didn't have that same impact that part 2 set.

Flewid638903d ago

Uncharted 2 is the pinnacle of the series (to me).

Granted, 4 had the best story in my opinion, but 2 was the overall best game.

SullysCigar904d ago

When arguably the weakest game in the series is still awesome and more fun than most games today, you know you're onto a winner!

coolbeans904d ago

I'd extend "arguably" before awesome too. Many technically demanding scenes were jaw-dropping for the time, but it's tough to ignore the sub-par context propelling the action forward.

SullysCigar904d ago

Tough for you, perhaps, and that's fine. I enjoyed it very much. Perhaps a little less than the others in the series, but then the bar is extremely high.

I remember being blown away by the water and sand tech in U3 for the time too. It certainly was a visual treat!

LucasRuinedChildhood904d ago (Edited 904d ago )

It is very good, but when I originally played Uncharted 3 it was the most disappointed I'd ever been in a video-game because Uncharted 2 was just that good. I enjoyed 3 much more when I replayed it in the Nathan Drake Collection though. I could just enjoy it for what it is and accept that it's not Uncharted 2 - it's not a roller coaster, and it doesn't balance and rotate between action, puzzles, platforming and set-pieces in the same way.

Uncharted 3's gameplay is a bit more compartmentalized and focused on one thing at a time. I'm not surprised the scrapped version of Uncharted 4 was going to have no gunplay for the first half. It's also paced much differently - it takes a long time to get to the notable set-pieces. Uncharted 2 is insane from Nepal onwards which is about an hour into the game. haha.

I did like the introduction of chase sequences, and I love first hour (bar fight, young Drake) and from the airplane sequence onwards but I just think the rest of it just sort of meanders along without as much purpose as 2.

When it comes to the script, you can feel the absence of Neil Druckmann and Josh Scherr (writer on every other console Uncharted game). Drake gets hit in the face, and the game goes on a random side plot for an hour to give you some boat set-pieces. He then washes up on a beach close to where Elena is staying to get you back to the real plot. Drake just says "How convenient" to try make you laugh off how sloppy the plot got.

In retrospect, I'm not sure if Naughty Dog were ready to work on 2 different games at once. 3 clearly had production issues that 1 and 2 didn't have, and Hennig's version of 4 didn't work out. They had to crunch so hard to get the rebooted version done on time that Bruce Straley gave up making video-games.

coolbeans904d ago

I'll give you some props for the extra analysis. I remember Druckmann climbing his way to a writer spot in UC2, but wasn't aware of Josh Scherr. I didn't know that was the reason for Straley's departure either. That's pretty damn rough.

GhostofHorizon904d ago

They had to make some weird choices as far as story went because the actor for Cutter had to bail which left a few holes in the story.

Uncharted is one of my favourite series and while the leap from 2 to 3 was not nearly as big as the leap from 1 to 2, I think it was an amazing experience none the less.

coolbeans904d ago

Graham McTavish's departure wasn't easy, but I don't think that would fix many holes tbh. Because the main issue to consider is the precarious mindset Naughty Dog was operating on: an increased emphasis in set pieces that HAD to go in and worrying about the context later.

Petebloodyonion904d ago

I really liked part 3 ( Among Thieves is still the best in my opinion) My only complaint was the interactions with the villains and how they were a missed opportunity, Linda MacMahon (Marlowe) was an interesting antagonist due to the history with Sully and Nate but it fails basically flat especially with her ending. And I couldn't care about Navaro 2.0.

What I did love and made me care was Cutter, in the short time he was in the game you could feel that the guy was a good treasure hunter for example when he pulled his own notebook with the clues he founds so the team can escape a room.
It was a small touch that add a lot to the character.

Good-Smurf904d ago

Marlowe was played by Rosalind Ayres.

MadLad904d ago (Edited 904d ago )

I have mixed feelings on the series. I still own all of them on the PS3, and the collection for PS4, but I didn't truly "love" any of the games until 4.

They're good games, but they always stumble on some element.
The first is good, but the climbing mechanics weren't exactly fine tuned with the first showing. Not to mention the spongey enemies if you played on anything past normal; but you're then faced with a fairly unchallenging game experience.
The second mostly fixed the climbing, but added in a pretty clumsy stealth mechanic.
Three was just two with a new story.

Four got it right though.
I don't remember once getting annoyed by any mechanic had in the game.

I know that everyone has a soft spot for 2, and 3 is sort of the black sheep of the series; but they did, overall, get progressively better. Which doesn't always happen.

UC 2, 4, 3 and 1. Great read and article

ABizzel11002d ago

No Golden Abyss -_-, otherwise I agree with the order.

UC2: Best overall
UC4: Best graphics, best gameplay, best locations, best environements
UC3: Best set pieces IMO (the boat and desert fights will always be amazing)
UC1: A rough Draft of what was to come
UCGA: Basically UC1 on Vita

Levii_921003d ago (Edited 1003d ago )

Great list and great article nicely writen and explained. Although for me personaly i would put Drakes Fortune above Drake’s Deception and Uncharted 4 is absolutely my favourite of the franchise and number 1 for me.

Inverno1002d ago

U2 is the only game playable on crushing without causing a great amount of frustration. Not to mention just how much influence it had that they redid some of U2s set pieces like the caravan twice, and armored truck chase in U4.

DFresh1002d ago (Edited 1002d ago )

I'd rate it as the following.

1.) Uncharted 2
(Close to perfection of any game I've played in years. Single Player/Multiplayer/Co Op all amazing.)

2.) Uncharted 3
(On par with UC2 multiplayer/co op wise minus the kickbacks [aka killstreaks]. I really liked the Lawrence of Arabia story.)

3.) Uncharted 4
(Single player is amazing. Multiplayer was meh. Co Op had potential. Absolutely hated the health revive system it slowed down the game way too much. Always preferred the fast pace action of UC2/UC3. Made it way more fun that way. Recoil was too ridiculous that most people in lobbies would only do hip firing, using power weapons and using that OP grappling hook to melee people after dropping them. Nobody wanted to revive anyone.)

4.) Uncharted
(It's the first in the series so it's hard to judge. Though I loved the story.)

NecrumOddBoy1002d ago

I agree here but it’s also a series you can play from front to back and truly enjoy. Story-wise, they are all great and flow so well. I wish they threw both Golden Abyss and Lost Legacy on this list. Lost Legacy is the best mechanically in my opinion. You can see it’s stepping stone framework for TLOUS2.

Michiel19891002d ago

uncharted 2 is one of the few games that actually surpassed its pre-release hype.

medman1002d ago (Edited 1002d ago )

I am a single player gamer...I barely ever touch a multiplayer component. The only exceptions over the years have been the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, TLOU factions, and the Uncharted 2 multiplayer. The Uncharted 2 multiplayer saw me spend more time playing it than all my other multiplayer experiences over the years combined. That game really was a masterpiece all around.

brando0081002d ago

I agree completely, those are all stellar MP experiences, coming from another SP gamer who only occasionally gives MP some time.

Gardenia1002d ago

Come to think of it, the step between Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2 is huge. It goes from the weakest in the series to one of the best games ever made.
I think I'm going to play all of them again soon.

Ninver1002d ago

Yeah all of a sudden I've got that Uncharted itch.

Michiel19891002d ago

is multiplayer still up for the remastered trilogy? or did it never have UC2 mp?

Ninver1002d ago

@michiel1989

Not sure
