Xbox 360 to Drive 'One of the Most Successful Hardware Sales Periods Ever' This Holiday

With Halloween in the rear-view mirror and Thanksgiving and Black Friday coming up, the holiday shopping season is definitely ramping up, especially with hot titles like Battlefield 3 selling 5 million in one week. With Uncharted 3, Modern Warfare 3, Skyrim, Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land, among others, this may be the greatest lineup in this editor's memory, and it could coincide with an amazing hardware sales period, says Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter.

well...no one is buying Wii...and that leaves a multimedia powerhouse versus the PS3..which is also a multimedia powerhouse.

Gonna be close...but the Kinect is going to put some skin in the game for 360, no doubt.

donniebaseball2183d ago

I think the combo of Kinect, Gears 3, and the fact that more people play CoD on Xbox will give MS the edge.

PetitPiPi2183d ago

I might pick up a Kinect bundle this holiday. All depends on the games MS include.

MS is going to have a great holiday season no doubt.

@ Donnie
You could probably add BF3 as well.

darthv722183d ago

it will be a 3ds. Been wanting one and with starfox and mario kart it makes that choice a bit easier.

gamingdroid2183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

***well...no one is buying Wii...***

Really?

Because prior to PS3's price cut, the Wii sold just as good as the PS3. Historically, the Wii is usually at the top of sales list every holiday to boot.

Last year in December, 2010, the Wii outsold the Xbox 360 by more than 25% and doubled the PS3's sales units, in other words almost a 100%. Heck in November, the Xbox 360 barely beat the Wii by less than 10%, while the Wii more than doubled the PS3 unit sales again at 140%.

So... say what again about the Wii?

I love how you take a thread about the 360, and a comment about the 360 which hardly mentioned the PS3, and turn it into another chance for you to bash the PS3.

That aside, the Wii's numbers this year prior to the holidays aren't what they were in previous years, especially not in terms of market share. And that obviously means the other two will have larger market shares, to say nothing of how they've been selling this year.

So while you can spout those numbers all you like, this year is not last year.

Your trolling, however, is still trolling.

***I love how you take a thread about the 360, and a comment about the 360 which hardly mentioned the PS3, and turn it into another chance for you to bash the PS3.***

Saying "no one is buying Wii..." is a relative statement and only makes sense to discuss in relation to it's peers.

If a product sells a whopping 50 million, but another competing product sells 50 billion, then the obviously the former barely sells to anyone.

So I'm providing context, and facts. If you feel that is trolling, then maybe you are attached.

***And that obviously means the other two will have larger market shares, to say nothing of how they've been selling this year.***

I said nothing of the market share, simply pointing out that Wii is "hardly" nobody buying!

That said, gaining market share due competitor decline is hardly worth celebrating. Unit sales increase are far more important than market share you didn't legitimately obtain.

Despite the Wii decline, it still shows Nintendo is still at the top of the charts in the Holidays. So you never know what will happen this year.

NPD December 2009 / 2010
Wii: 3.81 - 2.36
PS3: 1.31 - 1.21
360: 1.36 - 1.86

NPD November 2009 / 2010
Wii: 1.26 - 1.27
PS3: 0.72 - 0.53
360: 0.82 - 1.37

***So while you can spout those numbers all you like, this year is not last year.***

I never claimed that this year is last year, but all indication is Nintendo will have very nice unit sales this Holiday and historically NOT hardly anyone buying Wii as indicated by the original poster.

The facts, are facts though.

***Your trolling, however, is still trolling.***

I guess facts, doesn't please everyone and therefore perceived by a group of biased people as trolling.....

Hicken2182d ago

What makes you a troll is that your comments focus on the PS3 instead of the 360, which is both the focus of the article, and the focus of his comment.

He mentioned the PS3 in reference to the 360: "that leaves a multimedia powerhouse versus the PS3..which is also a multimedia powerhouse."

So we have speculation about the the 360's holiday numbers, and the Wii's previous performance in said category. The need to bring up the PS3's numbers: zero.

Market share has a pretty direct correlation to who's buying what, especially in a year-on-year capacity. You brought up numbers from the previous year, did you not? In reference to those numbers, the Wii had a massive market share, while the other two did poorly. And, honestly, if your market share has increased while your competitors' shares have decreased, you should be "celebrating."

Yes, you've got some facts, which you have hand-picked so that they support your stance. Why not post the yearly sales for each system? Why not post the worldwide sales for each system? Those numbers are just as factual, but I guarantee they bear out a different story than yours do.

If you want to argue they're irrelevant, here's this to chew on:

The Wii hasn't sold year on year like it has previously.

The PS3 and 360 have sold, if not better than, as well as they have in previous years.

The biggest names in gaming this year are out on the PS3 and 360, which will further drive their holiday sales.

The facts ARE facts, and it helps if you actually present ALL of them instead of being selective. THAT'S why I call you out on trolling.

Sorry, but I'm not as easy to fool as the mods who gave you all those bubbles.

gamingdroid2182d ago (Edited 2182d ago )

***So we have speculation about the the 360's holiday numbers, and the Wii's previous performance in said category. The need to bring up the PS3's numbers: zero.***

I was responding to the poster, Sinner101GR, and not the article. Furthermore, there are three competitors, why ignore the PS3? Are they not relevant?

***Market share has a pretty direct correlation to who's buying what, especially in a year-on-year capacity.***

... but it says nothing about unit sales growth! For that you need unit sales actual numbers. You can have increasing market share and declining sales. Good for you!!!

In this case it is irrelevant, because my argument isn't market share, but that there is significant demand for the Wii even in the face of decline.

Essentially I was challenging this posted by Sinner101GR:

"well...no one is buying Wii..."

That said, it's clear that having the biggest market share is selling plenty regardless of it's decline.

Clearly you are biased since you fixate on the negative news of PS3, and completely ignores the negative news that Xbox 360 lost to the Wii too and completely ignored my point!

***The biggest names in gaming this year are out on the PS3 and 360, which will further drive their holiday sales. ***

Can you please point to where I claimed to the contrary? Did I say anything about that AT ALL?

***The facts ARE facts, and it helps if you actually present ALL of them instead of being selective. THAT'S why I call you out on trolling.***

Do your own research!

What do I look like your personal assistant?

I'm not giving you a full detailed report. What I provided is enough to prove my point and giving you more data wouldn't have changed jack squat anyhow!

That is because your biased mind read something completely different than what I said which then proceeds to argue about something irrelevant to what I said.

Clear your mind, and re-read what I said!

Dont get me wrong having a ps3 especially to play blu rays is great.
But look at DVD/Blu ray sales and they have been at a steady decline because of many online streaming services like Netflix etc...
With the introduction of multiple discs becoming more common for 360 games its going to be hard to spend the extra cash on the ps3 for some families/people.
Microsoft have taken the reduction in physical discs quite seriously, because they are adding a serious amount of content to their platform for many territories via the next update (Tv channels, youtube etc..). Youve all seen the list.

Anon19742183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

The 360 might drive a decent holiday season in the US, but overall, betting on the 360 might be a little unrealistic. Worldwide, according to Microsoft, last quarter when sales traditionally start heating up, 360 sales were down almost 20% year over year, and MS hasn't said boo about Kinect sales for six months compared to the start of the year when they were yelling them from the rooftops.

Maybe they see something I don't, but when you're console dives 20% in sales going into the holiday season, facing strong competition from another capable platform that just received a price cut to bring it more in line with your product offering, I don't see any particular reason for optimism.

Last year saw a huge 360 surge due to Kinect, but if we look back at the launch of MW2, 360 hardware sales actually fell a little in the month MW2 launched compared to the year prior. Are we really expecting MW3 to suddenly boost 360 sales a large amount? I mean, let's be realistic. If you're a fan of Call of Duty, you're not just jumping onto the band wagon now. You've already got a console and you've played a bunch already.

gamingdroid2182d ago (Edited 2182d ago )

On the flip side, not dropping your price when the competition does, does instill confidence from MS in whatever plans they might have.

You got to keep in mind that a price drop is essentially the last thing a company does to increase sales, so MS might not have exhausted all their options yet and their last stand is equally as good as the competition.

Furthermore, casuals/new gamers historically tend to buy far more consoles during the Holidays as we see a huge bump every year, so it might be too early to call it especially when some market share is always lost when a price cut is introduced by a competitor, which then tends to level out.

I think the Kinect sales is significant primarily becauses MS average selling price has been going up in September:

I am tempted to pick up a Kinect again due to the new dashboard, cheaper price, ME3 support along with other games supporting Kinect AND the clip to mount it to my tv :-D

S_C2183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

And im looking to trade my kinect and games for it tommorow to pick up a ps3 again (160GB along with uncharted 3) still gonna keep my xbox tho :)

PetitPiPi2183d ago

You sir know how to waste money. If i knew you, I would buy the Kinect and your games for less then half the price you paid for them.

S_C2183d ago

@ PetitPiPi
I didnt say "I Will" I Said "Im Looking"

gamingdroid2183d ago

I'm also looking forward to trying ME3 with voice enabled squad control.

"LIARA SINGULARITY" with spit everywhere! :D

I really wish there were more titles that use Kinect as an optional add-on.

death2smoochie2183d ago

The Wii will once again outsell the PS3 and Xbox360 come holiday time.
It just does. Even with recent months were sales have dropped for the Wii, it still sells more or close to the other systems. How this happens I have no idea.
Nintendo is doing something right from the business end of things despite some financial losses this past fiscal period.

supremacy2183d ago

Yeah in the us and in the uk yes the 360 will have a successful holiday period. Elsewhere? Idk I mean the vita is coming out in japan and uncharted though not call of duty is out today.

However ms is likely to have a big holiday, perhaps the biggest of the 3. We will see how it all pans out.
