How Arkham City does open-world 'right', and how others need to improve.

Rocksteady decided to use an open-world environment in Arkham City, something it's critically acclaimed predecessor didn't have. Taking this risk seriously paid off, and Arkham City almost redefined this genre, bettering so many games that focus solely on this element. I explain how...

The open world element really shines with the combination of the side-quests, random chatter picked up around the city, and the various nests of goons that you can either take out like a predator or get into free-flow combat.

It's easily in the top 5 best open-world environments of this gen.

... I LOVE the game, and it IS in that top 5 indeed, but on the other hand I feel it's open world isn't as great as Assassin's Creed 2, plus I feel it also needs more variety in how it looks.

It's a great looking game no doubt. Absolutely amazing. However, it's very dark and every part of it kinda looks the same. I wish there was a bit more variety. I know the 'problem' is ofcourse the size and that it's basically 1 old abandoned ghetto neighbourhood which now functions as 1 big prison, but that's why it would have been nice to create some locations hidden in there with more colour and light.

The Ra's al Ghul levels were a nice diversion, but it was a bit of a missed opportunity to not have Poison Ivy having a light colorful environment somewhere to brighten things up for a change.

I agree to some point, but they really should have gotten the riddler stuff under control. There are just too many riddler trophies scattered around that it gets overwhelming and detracts from the overall experience for me.

This is definitely a triumph in story telling in a open world environment - but I don't agree that games like the Upcoming Saints game have to all follow a certain formula when the game's intent is so different in terms of game play and "story" which I use loosely with any Saint's Game

infamous 2 is still my favourite open world game.Already finish arkham city and now im playing festival of blood and i prefer infamous 2, the graphics is a lot better and have a lots of variety, im enjoying festival of blood more then batman, i just dont like hate the riddles puzzles. Im selling batman for ps3, i live in portugal/madeira if anyone wants the game i sell for 40€.

Infamous 2 sint in the same league as Akrham City, arkham city is a game of the decade candidate, Infamous 2 would even make a GOTY list

opinions. For me batman was only good on the joker story after the main event whats left to do? riddles? Boring at least infamous 2 i can make missions, play 2 times god choice or bad choice, and play other online missions, and batman is goty because its the best comic game if it was a game without the dc caracthers the reviews was lower, and infamous have a bigger town and better physic, visuals and variety.

Yeah that's all well and good and all, but I prefer Batman as well.

You can get mad if you want.

Chuk52521d ago

Have you even played Arkham City? The game has way more than just riddles, which are quite varied this time around, and if you played AC you'd know that.

gillri2521d ago

well your opinion isnt a good one then

mine is, backed by the considerable difference in review scores

the game really wasnt that big though they need to make the next like fallout size.

JackBrommers2521d ago

Not at all, as I describe in the article, it works so well because it's so tightly packed. If it were Fallout size, the world would be over diluted and full of unnecessary quests.
