Grand Theft Auto III: Does it Hold Up?

Phil of Botchweed writes: Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto III defined the sandbox genre and showed the world what the PS2 was capable of when it launched in 2001. And, most importantly it showed us the simple joy of hiring a prostitute and then running her over to get your hard-earned cash back.

It’s important to note that when Rockstar were making GTA III, they were going into uncharted territory. No one had attempted to create a huge city that a player could explore without any visible load times before. Of course they also had to give every character a voice and create the illusion of the city being alive with civilians going about their lives, planes flying overhead and trains routinely going round on their tracks.
