Battlefield 3 vs Modern Warfare 3: The War of The Launch Trailers

In a rather funny joke of destiny, Electronic Arts and Activision released two launch trailers of Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 yesterday exactly at the same time, exactly 24 hours ago.

Giuseppe Nelva of analyzes the reactions of the fans to both trailers.

Battlefield Fanboys will argue about anything to try and make the masses give a $h!t about BF3. COD is a household name, its like the Mario of FPS now.

This is getting embarrassing for BF3 Fanboys to try and compare such trivial things. Embarrassing.

BF3 all the way.Cod is the same nothing but explosions.

MW1 trailer:

Your pick??

BattleAxe2401d ago

Ok... and who doesn't like explosions?

SSKILLZ2401d ago (Edited 2401d ago )

Ooooooooooooooooooo SNAP! ....... I like explosions and blockbuster action.

Edit: I'm getting the two (:

ShoryukenII2401d ago

I don't. They lose their impact after you see a million of them. It just becomes annoying. Imagine if there was an explosion in The Social Network. Now imagine if there was an explosion in Transformers. Which would you be more interested in?

As much as I can't freaking wait for BF3 you shouldn't be that sure. IW are powering everything they got left to give us the ultimate CoD Experience. So I will get both to be on the save side.

MW3 one was bad. BF3 TV trailer, eh. BF3 launch trailer, good but not amazing.

PhantomT14122401d ago

Wrong comparison, one is a TV launch commercial, the other is the launch trailer. EA released a similar story launch trailer on 21st.

Abriael2401d ago (Edited 2401d ago )

Might want to read the article :D

It does specify that, but it doesn't matter. The TV one is still openly defined a "launch" TV commercial, and the most important thing is that both trailers were launched exactly at the same time (down to the same minute), which makes the comparison definitely relevant.

The fact that one is a launch trailer and the other is a launch TV commercial is rather inconsequential to the reaction of the fans.

Saying the TV ad and MW3 launch trailer were launched at the same minute is inaccurate, YouTube says this to me for each trailer:

"Uploaded by Battlefield on 22 Oct 2011" - Battlefield 3 - TV Commercial (Live Action & Gameplay - Official)

"Uploaded by CALLOFDUTY on 21 Oct 2011" - Official Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - Launch Trailer

Whereas the BF3 launch trailer (not TV ad) and MW3 launch trailer both have the same days labelled, so I'd consider that a bit more relevant.

Abriael2401d ago (Edited 2401d ago )

That part shows when a trailer has been *uploaded* not when it has been released to the public.

On youtube you can upload a trailer even several days before it's launch, and keep it private until you want to release it. When you make it public it'll still show the date of the original upload, not the date in which you made it public. Do check.

For the time in which the trailer was made public, you have to look at the channel page. Both there show "1 day ago" (and before 12 EST today they shown 23 hours ago)

Even if you check the thousands of sites that embedded them as soon as they were released, you'll see that they did it at the same time. Same on N4G.

I was at the computer myself when they both launched.

Unless you believe that everyone just ignored a MW3 trailer for a whole day? lol :D

The BF3 "launch trailer" has been made public about 30 hours before the MW3 onel, so comparing them number wise is impossible, unless you do that a lot of time down the line, making the 30 hours difference statistically irrelevant.

Both trailers haven't been made for the same broadcasting system (TV and internet) so it's not relevant to compare them. TV commercials of games often use live action footage for a wider audience who might not know the game in order to communicate its philosophy whereas trailers on internet are more (not exclusively of course) directed to gamers.
In fact, the BF3 -real- launch trailer is much closer (both are story trailers) to the MW3 launch trailer and surely Activision will soon release a similar TV ad of their own with live action footage too (they've done that for Black Ops, with Kobe Bryant if you remember).

Now if I had to make a comparison between the two launch trailer (and that's an intersting one), you can notice that the MW3's trailer is really fast, reflecting their smoothness (60fps) and rapid concatenation of action and set-pieces. In fact, no shots of the MW3's trailer last longer than 2 secs (you can also say that they don't want you to see that their graphics haven't improved a bit since 2 years) whereas BF3's ones, while being pretty fast too, take more time, wanting you to admire the beauty of their new engine.

yeah they failed to embed the bf3 launch trailer
