Microsoft Cash Keeps Rolling In

Doug Barney writes: "Critics love to say Microsoft doesn't innovate. Try telling that to the Entertainment and Devices Division which pulled in nearly $2 billion (yeah, that is just for one quarter). Can you say Xbox and Kinect? I thought you could." (Microsoft, Xbox 360)

This just re-iterates what I have been saying all along.

Critics!? You mean the whinny fanboys on internet forums and gaming sites?!

Well yeah but a lot of industry analysts are also very bearish(negative) on Microsoft. After all it was the guys on wall street, not just N4G, who said PS3 would outsell XB360 as soon as PS3 launched or within a year after launch.

For some reason everyone loves to hate on Microsoft, that attitude is so 90s. I think its because they are big successful and American. Google and Apple are too but they have demonstrated more politically liberal attitudes, so they get a pass for the most part. MS keeps politics out of their business model, as huge corporations should, but for that they are seen as old style "evil" big American corporate.

I know, people are stupid right.

@Earthlover: An intelligent comment on N4G???? Bubbles for you good sir!

When the justice department went after them for "monopoly" charges, it went down hill from there. MS has never recovered from that.

Then it all became trend to hate on MS, and soon it became trendy to love Google and Apple.

its not that people hate microsoft. they just don't like their monopolistic practices, anti competitive behavior and their ability to copy someone else's work and try to make it seem as if they made first.

as for the revenue, they did raise the prices for xbox live.and they are selling a camera for more than it costs to make it just like their hard drives.

but I don't think xbox 360 and kinect are the only products in the devices division.

God forbid capitalism!

Selling something for more than it is made? Preposterous!

Have you ever wondered why gold, oil, diamonds and iPhones cost what it does?

Ah yes, the connection between income and innovation. I know it exists, but it's a bit more obscure than to just say. "Oh, they don't innovate!?!? They made a billion dollars, that means they innovate all the time."
An Apple fanboy's usual argument would be that MS makes a lot of money, even though they don't innovate. But who cares, I think 360, Live, Kinect and all that is innovative enough.

Thank you. You just said what I was about to say. The 360 is mostly a copy of every idea in gaming since the Dreamcast and because they made a billion dollars that means they innovate. Atari, Sony, Sega and Nintendo have shaped the gaming world to what it is today with both hardware and games. Microsoft gets Kinect and suddenly they are 'innovative'. @ Tommykrem. not even Live. Dreamcast and Steam were doing basically the same thing long before Live existed.

Well, the further the industry advances the less often you are going to see technology unlike anything else on the market, so I guess you could say that since MS are late adapters they haven't contributed with as much innovation as the competition has, but I think that LIVE will stand as a benchmark in gaming for quite some time. I'm not that sure about Kinect. Of course, Xbox has had its share of innovative games, which is perhaps the most important thing.

But yeah, if I were to say which one of Nintendo, Sony and MS were the least innovative this generation, I might have gone for MS, not quite sure actually.

I think MS proved that the EDD and the Xbox business overall was a step in the right direction.

MS made a great process to enter the living room and to be honest, this is something Google and Apple failed to do so far.

They will have a userbase of 80 million Xbox 360s in the next 2 years and about 40 million Xbox Live users with 20 million paying $50 per year. Their business model really paid of and the 3 billion USD profit the EDD will achieve for this financial year combined with last financial year proves them right.

I doubt Apple would succeed in creating a non portable gaming device.

Sorry, but I don't expect a magazine calling itself the "Independent Voice of Microsoft's IT Community" to ever criticize or find anything wrong with the company in the first place. This is hardly journalism anyway. How does a good quarterly pertain to innovation in the first place ?
