Xbox 720: Is Microsoft Playing Game of Chicken With Sony, Nintendo?

Xbox 720 could be making an appearance in 2013, although some believe Sony's more likely to release PS4 first. Regardless of the actual launch schedule, by letting some info slip, Microsoft could actually be toying with the competition in an effort to retain its customer base.

Sony never release a new console first, they always wait to see what other company's release then bring out there's, the perfect strategy that destroyed the Saturn and Dreamcast.

A_Troll_From_Ign2220d ago

Didn't work this time around though

fluffydelusions2220d ago

360 and PS3 are more or less tied this gen in terms of userbase at this point and 360 had a year head start.

LOGICWINS2220d ago

^^Ummm...I think your going need to provide a link to support that statement.

dark-hollow2220d ago

The successor to the most and best selling console in the history is a title very hard to keep up with.

In Term of quality, the ps3 never ceased to impress,
But financially wise, the slow start and the 600$ tag didn't help it.

RememberThe3572220d ago (Edited 2220d ago )

The difference is miniscule at this point.

Xbox 360 – 55 million as of 4 June 2011
PlayStation 3 – 51.8 million as of 30 June 2011

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

The links are next to the numbers.
A 3.2 million difference isn't much when your talking about systems that have both sold 50+ mil.

bobrea2220d ago

Who really cares though? They both have a large enough userbase to not have to worry about going under like the Dreamcast or Saturn did. Even if Microsoft has a few more million users, it's really not that relevant. There WILL be another Sony console, and there WILL be another Microsoft console, and both of them will sell.

"360 and PS3 are more or less tied this gen in terms of userbase"

That's a big win marketwise for MS and a huge loss for Sony compared to last gen.

gamingdroid2220d ago (Edited 2220d ago )

It turned out the console that couldn't COULD!

Nobody would have imagined that the Xbox brand would be what it is today. I remember how the black original Xbox was the laughing stock next to Sony, whom proclaimed:

Sony on MS competitions: "We do not care."

Sony on MS: "Beating us for a short moment is like accidentally winning a point from a Shihan [karate master], and Microsoft is still not a black belt."

"Microsoft is trailing behind us, but they are not a threat. They are good at improving [on products], but we will be advancing to the next level with revolutionary technology."

"The Xbox 360 is more of an Xbox 1.5 than a next generation console."

"This time, Microsoft has stated clearly that it is going after PlayStation. However, they're going not after the PlayStation 3, but the PlayStation 2. They were looking at 2, and that's why Xbox 360 became like that."

There are plenty more of those, but those were some of the choice quotes. I particularly liked the last one. How ironic?!

PS2 was before xbox and NGC and the PS1 was before the N64

boommuffin2220d ago

wow it sure is wierd how things turned out. any one remember when the N64 was the graphics juggernaut? lol

vishant1012220d ago

N64 was very very powerful if you could use it well that's y the amount of acclaimed titles is higher then its competition i ask you all is there even a game on the ps1 or any sega platform that came to the level of mario 64 or zelda the only problem with n64 was that it was too expensive and the format couldn't hold the same amount of content as cd's but when games were created for the 64 magic happened :)

TheOneYouHate2220d ago

I believe this time Microsoft wants to release after Sony. It already has a loyal fanbase so there is no need to prove anything. Once Sony shows what's under the PS4, Microsoft will absolutely want to outperform Sony. Just wait Microsoft wants to have the most powerful console and will brag about it untill that gen has passed.

gamingdroid2220d ago

I don't think so.

MS' innovation is generally in software, and we know "graphics" or "most powerful" machine has never won console war. It essentially killed the PC gaming industry.

If anything, MS will try to scale it down and try to appeal to you via services i.e. LiveTV and such while ensuring developers are happy i.e. the cost of development can't go up too much.

dark-hollow2220d ago

If this gen taught us anything then is don't reflect what will happen next to what did happen this gen.

The last is now the first and the first is now the last.
the weakest console is now the strongest console.

Nobody knows.

rob60212220d ago

I'm wondering if MS will screw over it's potential power with a bloated Windows 8 OS running in the background. However it would be a modified OS, because no way they'd want it to be an open system like PC.

gamingdroid2220d ago (Edited 2220d ago )

Sony successfully employed that strategy of "wait for the better system" against the Dreamcast, and they tried it again with the PS3. Remember all the claims Kutaragi made?

Needless to say it didn't work as well this generation.

Who said this Generation is over?

NYC_Gamer2220d ago

i doubt ps4 will come out before the next xbox

donniebaseball2220d ago

Depends on how eager Sony is to avoid giving MS a head start again like they did with 360.

Kaleki2220d ago

No way the price will be close to $99.

BrightFalls762220d ago (Edited 2220d ago )

I know 360 and PS3 will end up being more or less tied for world wide sales but Sony really messed up this generation. The fact is that Microsoft owns North America now and was able to take about 50% of the market from Sony world wide. That's huge.

I hope Sony learned their lesson, will listen to developers and avoid the giant enemy crabs this time around.
