IGN: How Grand Theft Auto III Carjacked Open World Games

Michael Thomsen: Grand Theft Auto III didn't invent the idea of the open world game, but it may have perfected it. From Warren Robinett's Adventure for the Atari 2600 to Maxis's offshoot SimCopter, allowing players to author their own experiences in a simulated world has been fundamental to video game design. (Grand Theft Auto III, PC, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360)

I must agree with the author on this one... GTA 3 took open world games to a whole new level... it just had the right ideas with the right tech at that time.. Can't wait to see what Rockstar is cooking up for GTA V...although i didn't liked much GTA IV... they need to allow bank robbery , store robberys and something like Pay Day the Heist it would be fun

If you want store robbery go play mafia 2 if you want bank robbery go play the godfather 2.
GTA is about gangs and drugs not about robbing shit.

I disagree, My favorite GTA missions were the robbery ones.
GTA Vice City: Bank
GTA San Andreas: Casino
GTA IV: Bank

I wonder why RockStar in general are not yet getting on the HD collection train, people would actually pay for this game and other ones made by Rockstar :(

Especially since it's the 10th anniversary soon, it would be perfect to release now.

I was playing GTA since GTA 2....When you would play via an aerial view and only see tiny little characters and micro-machine-sized cars.

I remember playing GTA 3 on PS2 for the first time and saying to myself- WOW...think of the possibilities.

Funny enough is that open-world games today still maintain that same formula that GTA 3 did.

VICE CITY was the best for its time. San Andreas got a lot of word of mouth but Vice City was epic.

"San Andreas got a lot of word of mouth but Vice City was epic"

what?? no...just no, san andreas was the best because it had it all, to this day it is the most complete GTA in terms features, no other GTA can compare in that regard
