BT: "This is not just simply list of the ten scariest games or the best horror games or what have you. Certainly, a good number of games on this list have their terrifying moments, their epics levels of gore, their soul shearing moments of horror, yet plenty do not as well. This is because Halloween, at least these days, is something of a paradox of a holiday. It is a holiday that both worships and mocks the darkness, a holiday that with one hand tells to remember there are indeed things to fear out in the night even as with the other it reminds us it is ok to laugh at would-be terrors. Halloween is as much the scared little child hiding under the covers from the monsters as it is the grown adult taking the opportunity to mock, even if just for one night, the things which (real or otherwise) go bump in the night.
So it is with all of that in mind that I have written and compiled this list. This list is composed of the 10 games that best represent all the various aspects I love and treasure about the holiday of All Hallows Eve. No doubt many of you will disagree with my choices and find exclusions that boggle your mind. This is fine, after all this is simply MY list of the Top 10 Games for Halloween and indeed, if things go well, at least one more BT staff member should be posting their own version of this list (or something close to it) the following week. Regardless, hopefully everyone can at least appreciate my choices and see them in the spirit in which they are intended. And if not… Well such are the things that comment sections are made for. And so, with no further ado, let us begin."
REmake kept the original style adding new flavour and graphics, Resident Evil 2 is a complete modernisation. Which remake style is superior?
The GameCube remake was stunning for its time but the new modernisation efforts are breathing some much-needed life into the older games.
Both are fantastic but the old style controls and the half way house attempt to modernize them in remake both feel extremely dated now. Taking away your preference for the various settings and characters, the recent remakes are objectively better games.
I think anyone voting for REmake is simply doing it out of nostalgia. No way a new young gamer is going to pick that over the new ones. I couldn't even get my son to play the game for more than an hour.
Depends what sort of experience you're looking for. If you enjoy the old fixed camera OG style then REmake is to me the pinnacle of the form. Incredible atmosphere, visual style and a fantastic revision of Resident Evil 1 with additions that feel completely seamless. Resident Evil 2 Remake in an excellent update (especially running with the IMO vastly superior original RE2 soundtrack) with the benefits of modern design but I still prefer the original game.. it didn't "overwrite" that experience in my mind the way REmake felt like it became the definitive RE1 experience.
Got that retro survival horror bug? Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best survival horror games from yesteryear.
Eternal Darkness was way ahead of its time especially for a Nintendo exclusive.
I would love to see a remake or sequel (multiplatform)
4 people love Eternal Darkness.
Quick! Jump on that remake, whoever holds the rights these days.
Undead are the peace makers.
The first time I felt like a game got DLC right was Borderlands 1. $10 for hours of content.
Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2 & 3, Borderlands 1 & 2, GTA IV - those are my gold standards of DLC.
Something they couldn’t even give us in GTAV or RDR2
I honestly thought we’d get some Alien type of DLC for one of them at least
