In-Game Advertising: Should We Embrace It?

From humble and comical beginnings, in-game advertising has snowballed into something ferocious. Video games were an untapped advertising gold mine; a new resource through which to reach the 18-34 year old 'sweet spot' market. From their traditional place in print media, television and radio, product commercials crept further into our lives as time progressed and technology converged. The Internet. Video games. Online gaming. Broadband speeds. Now, even the games we play on our iPhone and Android mobile devices are rife with commercial marketing. Advertising bombards us from all angles. Is this a harmless product of digital media's rapid progression, or is it something which could potentially spiral out of control? (Burnout Paradise, Culture, Industry, James Pond 2 Robocod, Metal Gear Solid Series)

If it were to somehow make games cheaper, I wouldn't mind.

As long as mario doesnt stop in the middle of a scene turn around and say I need to drink a COCAAAA COLAAAA!!!! In a cheese way I could possibly live with it...

For example billboards in GTA IV with real brands or the people in Mafia drinking and smoking real brands...

Same rules as in a movie really if they go out of the plot to advertise it would ridiculous but when james bond speeds off in his porche its cool!

Edit: as for pop ups like in mobile apps you can stick those up your...

Nope download Ad Block Plus for PS3,360 and Wii to keep yourself safe from those annoying ads.

Personally I don't mind long as it don't become a nuisance or soon as I enter a game I being get hit with Advertisements.

Until they stem trade-ins, I'm up for developers to do this...unless it's some jokers like Infinity Ward or Valve. Mind you, it sounds like a match made in Activision heaven.

If they do ads in games that would piss me off, it already gets me furious in the Iphone games that are free......but then again i dont think they mean the same type of ads hahaha

commercials in the middle of playing any game is a fail lol

I would love for there to be a McDonalds level in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 :D (although this would cause controversy)

How about a Disneyland level? Team Deathmatch would be awesome with all the rides and stuff!

That would be kind of awesome when you have things that are more realistic. A shootout inside a McDonalds would be kind of cool.

I have no problem with in-game advertisement, as long as it is tasteful and fits in.

One of the most annoying in-game adverts I remember was the MLG cubes everywhere in Rainbow Six Vegas.

should we embrace it?

ummm. NO.

it wont make anything cheaper it will just give extra money to devs/publishers. do you really think they will shift the savings to the consumer?

the same people that brought us online passes and other anti consumer practices are gonna look after us?

yeah if you think that please just stop breathing. like right now.

I don't know, I found it really awesome when I was playing Crackdown and there was a billboard for the DVD release of 300. As long as it isn't intrusive upon gameplay, I think it'd be really cool to have around.

advertising in videogames is simply anoying and problably the companies that do this get bad rep for that.
