Nintendo Life: SEGA's attempt to have Sonic the Hedgehog transcend his 2D roots and venture into the realm of 3D didn't go nearly as smoothly as Nintendo's own Super Mario 64, despite Sonic Adventure being generally well received upon its release on the Dreamcast in 1999. It didn't take long for the cloud to lift from the judgement of players and critics alike and the camera issues, atrocious voice acting and various glitches that had been overlooked previously suddenly became more than just minor quirks.
From Games Radar: "Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka has revealed that he had "mixed feelings" about releasing a game on a non-Sega console.
In a tweet, which shared another tweet celebrating the 20th anniversary of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Naka wrote: "I had mixed feelings about Sonic's run on non-Sega hardware, both sad and happy. It's been 20 years now." The video game designer didn’t elaborate on his tweet any further so it’s not clear what his initial concerns were. "
Growing up... Sega WAS Sonic and vice-versa to me. Sometimes being multiplatform does "take away" from the experience a bit imo (especially nowadays when everything is just done for "how to maximize profits")
Would be a dream come true for another Sega console. Had they still had non stop arcade hits which are now disfunct anyways a dreamcast esqu console for arcade ports would be awesome
But times cganged
Yuji Naka was a big reason why Saturn failed (it really needed a Sonic game, and he refused to let Sonic team use his Nights engine for a Sonic game, and creating another engine from scratch was difficult because of Saturn's weird architecture) and Sega never recovered from that. So his opinions about Sega having to release games for other consoles don't matter.
Sonic the Hedgehog is turning 30 years old, and at this late stage in the character's life, it might be time to give up on that precious 3rd dimension.
Or maybe people should let Sonic evolve past 2D sprites. Stop holding the series back because you're nostalgic for the 90s.
Naw Sonic Unleashed had some amazing day time stages, Sonic Generations modern sonic was fantastic. Forces problem was lazy stages that took 2 seconds to beat and barely any skill past holding square. As long as they do it right modern sonic is fantastic.
2D sonic is great and mania is too. But sonic 4 ep1 was mehh, EP 2 was good though. But I'd play day time unleashed over it every time
I like both 2D and 3D sonic games. The original series, Generations, Mania (for 2D) and then of course Adventures, colors and Lost World (for 3D).
Or just literally steal what fans have been making, seriously there's like 4 fan made sonic games out there that play better than anything team sonic has made in years
When you rip off the plastic, crack open that case and smell that new game smell, the absolute last thing you want is a boring exposition dump about the game universe you're about to enter. What's this? Tutorials? Garbage. Put. Me. In. The. Action. This is a list of the game's who's openings grab your attention and don't let go.
Of all time?? ..and you mention ambiguous games like RE 7 or Fallout ...It is hyperbole at least.....i will say MGS 1 and 3 , Abe s oddysee (on ps1) , FF 7 ,Monster hunter 3 on wii , Crash Bandicoot 1 (+first level)....and so many more better games than the article s list
Oh man just off the top of my head; FFVII, LoZ:OoT, Uncharted 2, BioShock, Fallout 3, GoW3, Metroid Prime, Mass Effect 2, Super Metroid, Castlevania SoT, New GoW, Batman Arkham Asylum, Halo 3. The opening scenes/levels to these games did such a great job of setting the tone for much of the rest of the game.
GOD OF WAR 3.... The intro recap of the entire story to that point and the first level was amazing!
How is the first infamous not here? I remember talking to a friend when the whole screen went white and chaos ensued. Got my attention real quick.
