Microsoft Should Focus More on Games Less on Xbox 360 TV

VGR: Now while I love the fact that more and more of the video and music content I want is becoming accessible on more devices, there is still a major hurdle that blocks this and many other on-demand and streaming services from landing on our TV’s. And that is our ISPs and cable providers.

Its an optional service, even if they where not working on TV the Xbox Live team doesnt make games so no resources have gone to waste at all.

EVILDEAD3602478d ago

No matter how the author tries to spin it, there is literally no downsid to Micrsoft continually improving the content offered on Live. It's true that everyone in the world won't be able to enjoy all of whats offered, but that isn't just Xbox Live, it's the internet PERIOD. It's the same way for certain content on PSN, etc.

This has nothing to do with the fact that millions and millions of Live owners WILL enjoy the content Micrsoft secured with these partnerships.

In my personal experience I found that I'm blown away at how Live is simply aoart of everyday life. ESPN started off as just an ok way to see highlights and a couple of events and now has blossomed into a BEAST of a service. The live scoreboard options, the way you can jst goto the news you want, the personalized sports categories..all reasons why I find myself on it as much as I am the regular channel.

But, I'm also a huge fan of Zune Pass, Last FM, Netflix, Zune Moviees etc.

Just the fact that they are blowing twhat was offered out of the water is simply a WIN for 360 owners.

The ignorant comment by the author saying that the only game on the 360 is Halo clearly shows his ignorance.

For actual 360 gamers, like myself I actually find myself overwhelmed with TOO many games.

I just finished the phenominal Gears campaign and havent even scratched the surface on the online content.

This is all while currently juggling..

Dead Island
Rage
Dark Souls
Madden
NBA 2K12
Gunslinger w/ Fruit Ninja

This is all without picking up my paid preorder of Forza 4 in a few days.

And that is what I'm playing on the 360 alone with SOTC being played on my PS3

Micrsoft is doing exactly what they promised at E3 and it doeant matter if their detractor try to pick holes in what's offered..it's optional..

Seems that Sony and Microsoft have traded places.

Used to be Sony having no games and them trying to make their PS3 into a Media god and Microsoft focusing on games. Now it's quite the opposite, though Sony still kinda ones up...all of this for me, as they have BBC iPlayer, ITV Demand, 4OD, Playtv, lovefilm and an internetbrowser, which pretty much lets you watch anything that's on the internet.

Still, kudos to Microsoft. Still not enough for me to renew my gold membership.

The difference is that there is plenty of games on the Xbox 360 already released. They have a huge library and on top of that MS still delivers those AAA games.

Gears of War 3 was and is humongous, Forza 4 is shaping up to be another AAA hit and even Halo: CE Anniversary is getting the AAA treatment.

People complained about Kinect, but that became a humongous success. Live TV will likely be a huge success, just like how the original Xbox with the Live service then grew tremendously until what we have today. I'm sure competitors will try to follow suite soon enough.

Sony on the other hand early in it's life was a confused machine. Even the architectural design was better suited for video processing, the "father" of Playstation wanted to call it a supercomputer not a console, the games released was mostly mediocre or worse and many was subpar even looking at multi-plats. That is a few of the reasons why PS3 was criticized. I think the more people criticize a product, it means they cared because the Playstation brand was a loved brand by more than 140 million users.

Fast forward 5-years and Sony has done a bang up job of fixing the lack of quality games, re-focusing on the games and still bringing some of that entertainment services such as ilovefilm, bbc and so on. Playstation in my book re-earned it's spot.

The browser though, still need a ton of work. Practically useless still....

yesmynameissumo2477d ago

I agree EvilDead, it is great MS continues to secure partnerships. However, having yet another fee in order to fully get the benefits of your Gold membership is silly. Why not put those partnerships in getting games that won't end up on the PS3? They've flip-flopped so much this generation and everyone seems to "ok" it. When the PS3's media capabilities were highlighted, it was mocked for "not being a games machine". Now MS expects you to pay them for the privilege of essentially streaming cable...from them...for another fee, and people are excited? Wha?

KonGreat2477d ago

Of those games that you mentioned, only Gears and forza is exclusives for the xbox. While the PS3 has a bunch of exclusives, Infamous 2(which looks dope), resistance, uncharted etc etc.
I own only a xbox, but I'm jealous of what PS3 gets, FREE internet, more exclusives (most of them look pretty good too), blu ray, internet browsing.
I mean damn. I use my xbox for gaming, I have my TV/interactive digital box for watching tv, give me value for my GAMING, I want more gaming related things with Xbl (free games anyone?), not things that I already pay for with my cable/internet.

EVILDEAD3602477d ago

@ Kon

'Of those games that you mentioned, only Gears and forza is exclusives for the xbox.'

I just listed games I'm juggling right NOW. Because they all just came out. There are actually 3 exclusives (you missed Gunslinger) and again I said these are without mention Forza 4 which I pick up in a couple of days. So are you pretending that because Dead Island, Rage, Madden, and NBA 2K11 are multi-plat that they somehow don't exist?

And you are pretending to only own a 360? If you actually owned only one console why would it matter if Rage or any multi-plat arrived on another console that you don't own? If you were truly 'jealous' of what was on the PS3 then you'd simply buy one.

As for the content? Again, it's optional and if you don't care for it don't use them.

For the millions that will, Microsoft just upped the ante, it's easy to see through the usual hate. When Micrsoft announced Netflix, you had fan bloggers claiming how useless it was. Fast forward and the streaming service is on every console and the service has grown tremendously..you don't hear a peep.

@ yesimo

Please enlighten about the additional fees that Live member will be paying to enjoy Youtube on their 360. We pay for Netflix seperately, but stream it on our consoles and millions enjoy this process. If there is other optional content that people enjoy using this same process, then what is the downside?

So Micrsoft shouldn't have secured these deals bewcause the PS3 was' mocked' by some kids on the internet? Because, detractors try to diminish the exclusives that 360 owners continue to enjoy and support in the millions?

Please name all of these Micrsoft published exclusives that ended up on the PS3? Please name the timed exclusives that were soooo crucial to Microsoft that they should have spent all of their energy and resources securing them from becoming multi-plat? Then show how sucessful those franchies were on the PS3 once that timed exclusive made it there.

Bottomline..great move by Microsoft, they promised it was coming way back at E3 and now they are delivering. Only time will tell what impact it has on the console and it's user base.

If you don't see a downside in having to pay to access content (Netflix/Hulu) you've already paid for (and is also free to access from a damn cell phone no less), nothing I say will matter. It's obvious you're fine with being ripped off.

"So Micrsoft shouldn't have secured these deals bewcause the PS3 was' mocked' by some kids on the internet? Because, detractors try to diminish the exclusives that 360 owners continue to enjoy and support in the millions?"

MS should do whatever they feel they can make money off of. As I should do whatever I feel to not support being nickle and dimed into getting the full potential out of my $300 investment.

"Please name all of these Micrsoft published exclusives that ended up on the PS3? Microsoft published has nothing to do with an exclusive no longer being exclusive. Imagine if the Mass Effect franchise were exclusive? Or Castle Crashers? Or Limbo? Or Ninja Gaiden? Or if Splinter Cell Conviction had been good or Crackdown 2 or Fable 3? I don't really need to prove the success of something when it's already on the competition's platform. The viability of the PS3 shows why damn near everything on the 360 is also on the PS3.

Bottom line...I'm not going to pay Chevy to put gas in my car. I'm not going to pay Kenmore to put groceries in my fridge. I'm not going to pay for XBL when I can use fee-less options that deliver the same if not better experience.

What are you even talking about? I have a subscription to Netflix..I steam on Xbox Live for free. If I have a subscription to Hulu Plus it's the same. There isn't any additional fees.

I'm not a member of Live beause of these services, but I absolutely love that they are there. Once again, optional.

LOL @ pretending people are getting ripped off beause YOU arent a member of it...typical fan kid mentality..but the truth is if millions of eople felt Xbox Live was a rip off then you would see the mass exodus of those same millions. Instead...35 Miliion strong and growing

LMFAO @ you pretending that Limbo, Castle Crashers, Ninja Gaiden going multi-plat mean a thing to the state of the 360.

I don't have to imagine if Mass Effect was exclusive because at the end of the day the original Mass Effect will always be a 360 exclusive and you are talking about a sequel that does 2.5 million on the 360 that did 600,000 by the time it got to the 360.

Ohhh I get it you want to pick on select exclusives instead. What was that? Imagine if Splinter Cell conviction was good? Why imagine..it got a 85 Metacritic. This must be bad accoring to you. So I guess that Gran Turismo 5, Resistance 3, Killzone 3 all getting a worse Metacritic than Splinter Cell Conviction means they ALL sucked as well right?

See how easy it is to do the same thing? At the end of the day Micrsoft's top franchises are on the 360 period. But, unless you want to imagine Castle Crashers and Limbo gonig multi compares to Halo Reach, Gears of War 3 or Forza 4 then please keep enjoying imaganitation land.

Bottomline, it's clear that this isn't about Live or the announcement of more content, it's simply more fan kid console war rhetoric. Again, which is why I said Microsoft is DEFINATELY on the right track if it's detractors spend time pretending otherwise.

Huh...XBL is a rip. How anyone can defend it is insane.

yesmynameissumo2477d ago (Edited 2477d ago )

@ Evil
Don't label me a fanboy simply because I don't share your opinion. Doing so is more of a fanboy act than disagreeing. Is a differing opinion that frightening to this fantasy vision of XBL you have?

"What are you even talking about? I have a subscription to Netflix..I steam on Xbox Live for free. If I have a subscription to Hulu Plus it's the same. There isn't any additional fees."

Haha, you're really trying. Tell ya what, create a Silver account or don't renew and then tell me how well that streaming over Live for "free" works out for ya. I have Netflix and Hulu and don't have to pay anyone but Netflix and Hulu to access it from my PS3. THAT is free.

LOL @ pretending people aren't getting ripped off beause YOU loooove it...but the truth is if millions of people felt Xbox Live wasn't a rip off then you would see more of the install base subscribe. Instead...13 million out of a 55 million install base (of which 35 mil have a Silver/Gold account) and kinda growing, maybe not? MS won't disclose sub numbers, just earnings.

I don't let Metacritic make my decisions for me, I play the games to form my own opinion. And Splinter Cell Conviction was not a Splinter Cell game. Easy button, lame MP, short and uninteresting SP. Feel free to not play the games and let Metacritic tell you what's good or not.

LMFAO @ You labeling yourself..Your the one who pretends that 'people like to be ripped off' if they don't share your opinion of Live.

Your the one pretending that 360 exclusives are bad because of YOUR opinion of them . But, backtrack when I show the Metacritic which the fan kids around these parts use when they are trying to diminish 360 exclusives.

You are the one who are pretending that instead of securing these great partnerships for Live members, Micrsoft should have wasted money securing Limbo, Castle Crashers, and Ninja Gaiden as exclusives.

LMFAO @ it being you that is living in imaginationland.

Again it doesnt matter if you use ANY of these services because YOU are not the audience..you DON'T even have a Live account.

LOL..same stuff different day

i hate the fact that this upgrade could lead to live going up in price again just like when they released that espn thing

gamingdroid2477d ago

I'm not for price hikes, but let's face it, since Xbox Live was launched in 2001, there hasn't been a single price hike.

If you account for inflation, a $10 price hike doesn't even cover that.

MS wouldn't be able to do another price hike as that would be business suicide. The only way around this is charge LiveTV as an additional service and add an extra Xbox Live tier.

However, it looks like they want to attract more customers with this, so price is likely to stay put.

palaeomerus2477d ago

Subscriptions generally do not follow the rate of inflation. Monetary Inflation is generally measured in a basket of durable and consumable goods. Demand based inflation happens when scarcity makes a price go up temporarily. Inflation is not a uniform increase in all pricing.

And obviously the annual price of a live subscription DID go up from $50 to $60. That is called a 20% price hike.

Thatguy-3102477d ago

Fanboyism aside Sony is becoming the only hardcore game console out there...though I do wish they provided more services and features like Microsoft they do deliver on the games catagory...especially with the new "Michael" ad its obvious that they cater to the REAL gamers ..."LONG LIVE PLAY"

Blogz4Fanboyz2477d ago

could you clarify "REAL" gamers please??

are you saying that everybody that doesnt own a ps3 is not a real gamer???

listen, i have been a multi console owner for many generations now, and this gen is no different.

but, i find myself using my 360 20x more than ps3. i use my ps3 just for exclusives and my 360 for everything else.

you know in the world outside of n4g, sonys exclusive ARE NOT the be all and end all gaming. this year i will only be buying two games infamous2 (already bought) and uc3.

does this mean that i am not a REAL gamer? should i sell my wii and 360 to become a REAL gamer??

enlighten me please

Thatguy-3102477d ago (Edited 2477d ago )

when i mean a REAL gamer im talking about the ones who love a compelling storyline and can careless for the other stuff like services and all that.. Gaming has evolved as time passed and has become very gimmicky and the reason i mentioned the "michael" ad is not because its a ps3 ad but because it emphasizes and gives gratitude to the gamer and as far as exclusives they might not be all that like you say but sony offers a variety that cater to different type of gamers.

Thatguy-3102477d ago (Edited 2477d ago )

ohh and remember the days when the 360 was the harcore console? well can you say the same about it now? it focuses mainly on kinect and services with no intentions of making exclusives. The upcoming exclusives involve kinect style games which leaves the ps3 being the only hardcore console which is made up of third party and 1st party support...if it wasnt for the third party support the 360 would have turned into a wii with tons of services.

Mr Blings2479d ago

Totally agree...Xbox live is becoming a very fragmented service....If this direction continues I will stop paying for live. I find myself playing online games less and less and going back to more single player experiences anyway. The few games I want to play online I will get for PS3.

jack who2477d ago

you dont even know the meaning of what you just said.

DrFUD2478d ago

Wait.
If they were to make games they would have to spend money.
Just adding TV deals doesn't cost them anything and ultimately increases the revenue since these companies foot the bill to get there.
But why not, there's always room for another advertisement on a paid for service when suckers think it's cool to look at them.
Makes it look more robust and pro. LOL

NotSoSilentBob2478d ago

Not going to lie years ago when PS3 first was being sold as a major Blu-ray player, M$ was saying its all about the games and ripping on the PS3. Now all they have is TV service coming out and a few games. How the tides have turned.

_Aarix_2477d ago

Yea its weird...now sony is pushing games and microsoft is pushing media. This brings out the hypocriticy in everyone.

gamingdroid2477d ago

Key here is that there are plenty of third party games for the system. I have never once thought to myself, man I have no games. NOT ONCE!

It's always how the heck am I going to have time to play all these games? How can I squeeze it into my time?

Angrymorgan2477d ago

I used to own a 360 and refused to get a ps3 because of the lack of games, now I own a ps3 and refuse to get a 360 because of the lack of games

If in the future the tides turn again, I'll go back to 360, it's all about the games for me!

( missing out on gears cuz my OCD won't let me own both =\ )

KingSlayer2477d ago

There are plenty of third party games (the same game actually) for the both systems. The exclusives and services are what stand out and the PS3 is the winner. Not gonna pay to chat, message, watch youtube or update twitter. Not going to play games on 3 discs like it's 1995. Not going to reward MS for fixing their console 5yrs into its life. And damn sure am not going to pay them for cable.

MrBeatdown2477d ago (Edited 2477d ago )

They have plenty of third party games. So?

People are supposed to get excited about a platform on which they can play most of the stuff that they can play on PS3, plus watch TV (can't get that anywhere else)? Boy, I'd love to see Microsoft try to sell people on the next Xbox.

Sony shouldn't have even bothered. Apparently, they had the right idea all along. They should have just waited it out for that first year or two , released Uncharted, made a Twitter app, offered up a few subscription video services, and called it a day, since as long as you have most of the games the competing console has and do stuff every other device does, you're golden.
